“HIstoric hotel in great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2009

My husband and I stayed at La Fonda for 2 nights in June for an anniversary getaway. The hotel is one of the Historic Hotels of America--that should say a lot for it by itself as these are prestigious historic hotels that are part of the Preferred Hotel Group. The location is within steps of the Plaza and all the historic sites in Santa Fe. It is, of course, built in the adobe style as is everything else in Santa Fe--cool tile floors, thick adobe walls that keep the interior cool and fresh, and southwestern style furnishings. Our bed was comfortable with ample pillows, our bath was clean and spacious, and the restaurant was light and airy with a lovely skylit ceiling. We will definitely stay here every time we come to Santa Fe.

we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at La Fonda. I read a previous review about the size of the rooms - but we find them quite adequate in size and very nicely maintained.

Well above my expectations, prefect locations, and super friendly and helpful staff. Rooms are old, but in a good way. Really liked the entire atmosphere of the hotel. Staff really went out of their way to help you out, not that different than what you see at the four seasons.

“The best hotel in Santa Fe”

Step back to the grace and elegance of the 1920's. Step back to the old southwest.
Nothing else compares. You are at La Fonda.

I was treated to a superbly trained staff. Some had been with the hotel for a mere fifteen years. The bell captain was in his sixtieth. The food in the dining room is superb, the very best in Santa Fe. My room was clean and well cared for. The concierge was knowledgeable about all local events and took care of my every need.

La Fonda is the most historic hotel in North America. It is the only hotel on the plaza.
Don’t even think of looking elsewhere.

The hotel is a history lesson, while the rooms are modern--if smallish--and the beds comfortable. A pillow top mattress made for a good nights sleep. The location, right on the historic main plaza, cannot be beat--check out the Indian jewelry and wares every day on the plaza. The restaurant serves good Northern New Mexican fare, though there are lots of others nearby. The cantina at the Casa La Sena restaurant has a nightly "show" where the waiters sing Broadway--delightful!

What a charming and wonderful hotel. It is obviously well kept, both in the lobby and the guest rooms -- especially for so much foot traffic in the public areas. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. Since it is such an old facility we were not sure what to expect, but while there are no flat screen televisions, our basic room had a walk-in closet. You could not get more centrally located to walk and enjoy downtown Santa Fe. Live music in the lobby bar, and the fabulous Belltower Bar for sunsets. The main dining room was undergoing renovation while we were there, but the staff have done everythng possible to make the alternate set-up in one of the ballrooms gracious -- and the food was wonderful. The only glitch was the confusion on where to check in with a hostess for this dining room. There is a hostess podium outside the alternate dining room, yet the hostess is stationed around front in the lobby where the old dining room is. We watched lots of people in addition to ourselves wander into the dining room and just stand there confused. As soon as a server gets a chance they will come over and rescue you, but a simple sign at the door telling guests where to check in would be wise since it is obvious there are many more weeks of construction yet to go. Overall it is not your cookie cutter style corporate hotel, so expect things to be handled a little more old-school, such as when you check out you will not find a summary statement slid under your door the last night. Instead you will need to go to the desk and check out formally. But given the fact that this is an historic hotel that seemed like the right thing to do and it was actually nice to have some things handled with a little more personal touch than what you find at the big chain hotels. The amenities were all we expected and more.

The hotel is a history museum by itself, plenty of interesting things to discover in it cases and on it walls. Lots of shops, dining options & entertainment.
Our beds were so comfortable! They had just put in new mattresses with feather beds (just like home) and bedding, slept wonderfully.
Parking on site, for a fee. The La Fonda takes up an entire block, and they have their own attached garage parking (looks like adobe), a great convenience in a historic district! During our visit the state government was in session, the ski slopes were open, local schools were out for Spring Break and parking was non-existent, but we had no trouble parking at the La Fonda.
We stayed a week and the rooms are in an historic hotel, so they are not big, it was a tight fit for our family of four and our suitcases. The hotel installed a mini frig, so my youngest could have his favorite drink on hand. I wish we would have thought to ask for a humidifier (Santa Fe is really dry), maybe my face would've looked less like a prune!
Staff were friendly and helpful. Room service pricey, but all the dining options around the Plaza are higher in Santa Fe, so room service was in par with other hotels, I'm sure.
The outdoor heated pool was freezing! My kids love the pool but it took only one dip for them not to want to go back. The pool and hot tub were open limited hours (10am-4pm, I believe). They have a gym, but I didn't have the time or the energy to check it out.
La Fonda provided our room with bottled water daily which helped to keep us going... remember, Santa Fe is at 7,000 feet.
I would like to stay again at the La Fonda on the Plaza. It's a fun spot, the location can not be beat, wonderful atmosphere and convenient.
If our family were to visit Santa Fe again, especially for longer stays (more than a few days) we would seek larger accommodations. The room was very tight for four.
Overall for an historic property it was surprisingly quiet (even though there was construction right outside our window), had wireless, self contained (Spa, Dining, Bar & nightlife), casual & comfortable.... overall much more than I expected.
