“Fun hotel with historic interest”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2014

Just returned from business trip to Sante Fe and loved staying at this hotel. Excellent service and friendly staff added to the ambiance of the hotel that has beautiful appointments, artwork and tile. The king bed room was comfy, clean and had all the comforts of home (fridge, bottled water, K-cups, etc.) The location provided easy access to the plaza, shops and restaurants. I'd definitely stay here again.

The rooms are charmingly decorated and the bed was very comfortable but our standard king room was quite small with barely enough room to walk around the bed. There are no luggage racks so we slid our open suitcases under the bed. There is no bureau and no drawers anywhere in the room, just a tiny shelf under the nightstand and a couple small shelves in the armoire next to the mini fridge. The public areas are inviting and there are surprise nooks and crannies everywhere. The whole hotel is a maze and difficult to navigate, but part of the charm I suppose. There are a lot of shops at street level with both streetside and hotel entrances. The fitness room is quite small and tight but they fit in two bikes, two treadmills, an eliptical and resistance machine.

After a complete exterior and interior remodel, it's better than ever. The bathrooms are beautifully updated (love the barn door!) and the furnishings are a mix of new and old. The restaurant and other downstairs areas look brighter. I was there many years ago, and it still has the same charm but the facelift makes it more cheerful.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights using two rooms on two different floors. The location is excellent, with great access to the plaza. The exterior of the hotel and the public spaces are lovely with authentic décor. The rooms are well appointed.
The cons: the lower floor is VERY busy. The lobby is directly off the marketplace with many stores that have street access as well, so there is a lot of foot traffic. One of our rooms was on the lower floor but noise inside the room was not so bad as they are reasonably well sound-proofed.
The pool is pathetically small and squished into a courtyard like area next to the garage. Not commensurate with the hotel and cost.
They have a lovely rooftop bar but it is jam packed with people of the street, so you don't have better access than anyone staying elsewhere.

Room Tip: Choose upper levels to the back of the hotel - better views and quieter.

We booked a room for three persons with breakfast included. At breakfast the hotel insisted the “Package” we paid for was for three beds but only breakfast for two. Rather illogical, but no big deal.

What turned out to be the deal was the manager who was called in to sort the situation out.

Patric the manager – probably a retrained prison employee – with bodyguard’s physique and unfortunately with a bouncer’s way of arguing was very aggressive despite the early hour. He didn’t let me finish my sentences and told my wife to show him ”the contract” what ever that is. It felt like being back on the school playground… Then he left the breakfast area and we haven’t heard of him since.
Strange that a well working hotel can hire a guy like that. Won’t choose la Fonda again. The egg benedict was good despite it all.

This hotel was an experience, not just a place to stay. It is rich in history which is reflected in the decor, the hand painted furniture and tiles, and the intricate maze of beautiful rooms and patios. We enjoyed a "terrace" room with a walkout balcony on the concierge floor. The room was beautifully appointed and the service was cordial and professional.

If you like "modern" hotels, you may not appreciate the beauty of this hotel. However, if you enjoy staying in historical venues, with a location right on the central square, this is the right hotel for you.

Room Tip: If you are travelling in nice weather, a room with a balcony is worth the extra expense. The weathe...

Stayed at lafonda for one evening on our drive across the country. Santa Fe was a little out of the way for our trip but so worth it
LaFonda is amazing. The rooms are huge and make you feel like you are truly somewhere special. Easy parking. Wonderful rooftop bar to watch the sunset, location is perfect. Walking distance to all the shops and restaurants! If you don't stay at lafonda you are missing out.
