“THE BEST in Santa Fe!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Spent 4 nights here during the July 4th week--a great week to come to Santa Fe, and a perfect hotel. There is not a better located hotel in the center of town--right on the plaza, and steps to so many shops, attractions and the great culture of the city itself. The staff was top notch, from Eric the concierge who helped us select restaurants, to the housekeeping staff who always left the room spotless. We stayed in a one bedroom suite, and it was perfect--recently remodeled with a great king size bed that had a great mattress--very comfy. The room had a large double headed shower that was superb! The extra space in the suite was very nice.

The La Plazuela restaurant was excellent--both for breakfast and for dinner. We had light snacks at the lounge restaurant and that was tasty as well. The Tower bar on the roof was very good for drinks and to watch the sunset and the town and mountains.

Great bands play nightly in the Lounge and were really good--mostly country western as one would expect, and very popular with the locals--lots of dancing.

We looked and visited a number of other hotels in town--for location, fine accomodations, great food and drink, La Fonda is the best choice!

Room Tip: Splurge and go with the suite!

You are paying for the historic ambiance in the public spaces and it is terrific. The location is great (after you find it) and paying $15 to park. But the rooms are very disappointing and incredibly small for such prices. I was expecting luxury and it was not to be. Service is spotty and food choices limited to generic fare. We ate at the rooftop bar who advised everyone that it was standing room only starting at 5:00. The views were nominal so not worthy. If you are visiting, I suggest you go walk through the lobby but otherwise, don't do it. The pool is small and it is located right next to the parking garage with attendant noises and car exhaust. Mixed with heat, yuk! The kids plug up the Jacuzzi so don't bother and the location is an embarrassing long walk from your room in pool attire and wet. I saw someone paid $199, wish I had, my room was $300 and barely a double (though they insist it was a queen).

Room Tip: They ignore requests if you are staying only one night. You're treated like pass through traffi...

Dear Anonymous855,

This response is in reference to your Trip Advisor posting of July 4, 2014. I apologize for the distress you experienced at La Fonda on the Plaza. The amount of time and effort you have taken to share feedback is impressive and I wish to respond to your comments.

La Fonda on the Plaza is the only hotel directly contiguous to the historic plaza. Santa Fe is well over 400 years old many of the roads seem confusing for first time visitors.

Parking in any downtown area can be difficult. La Fonda discounts room guest parking by 50%, as well as validating parking for patrons to the restaurants.

The Bell Tower certainly is very popular for viewing the sunset. It is best to get there early to get a seat. I am sorry you did not find the 7th story views remarkable as this is one of the highest vantage points in Santa Fe, with views of mountains, the State Capital and Loretto Chapel (to mention a few).

The pool is near the parking garage. It is much like the rest of this historic building’s charming; small and quiet. La Fonda has handicapped parking and longer term parking close to the pool to reduce all issues, as well as a high volume fans removing fumes from all levels. I am sorry it did not meet your expectations.

I am happy to hear you like the historic lobby areas and disappointed that the room was not to your liking. Historic hotels have a vast array of room sizes; La Fonda's has room varying in size but all have the same amenity package, original art work and handcrafted details throughout. La Fonda offers both king size and queen size as bed types; the data given on this point is correct.

Pricing at La Fonda varies with demand, market conditions in the city and with our competitors. La Fonda is not the most expensive nor the least expensive--striving for solid guest value is our goal.

We take great care to ensure that important matters such as this are properly managed and clearly we did not meet your expectations. Thank you for your comments and please trust that your input is carefully considered, help to make us a better hotel.

Warmest Regards,

We stayed at La Fonda the last week in July. We were there for a wedding of two friends who celebrated their wedding after 27 years of being together. The hotel was so accommodating of their wedding and all of the guests. Our room was nicely appointed; a bit small but appreciated the comfort of the bed, the bathrobes, and the amenities. The location was great. Parking was easy and the hotel staff very helpful. The price was very reasonable for summer in Santa Fe. And big callout to Sammy for all her work to make sure the wedding went off without a hitch!!

Room Tip: not sure if they have larger rooms, but you might inquire. Our room was too small for the size of t...

After nearly two weeks in hotels and most of them motor lodges, I was ready for an upgrade. $199 for the night at this hotel was definitely worth it. I did a lot of Tripadvisor research and chose La Fonda. The location cannot be beat. Walk out the door to shopping and food. There are cute shops in the hotel lobby too. The lobby is bustling which is fun. Dylan at the front desk was so nice. Great with advice and directions and he upgraded us to a deluxe room. Check-out is NOON! How nice is that? Room was gorgeous. Love the painted headboards. Everything is so clean. Had a wonderful night's rest---so quiet. They had SIX towels in the bathroom--two of them bath sheets. Never see that. So nice not to run down more towels. We shared a crepe in the French pastry shop. It was delicious. I've made a few bad choices on this trip but not this time. I couldn't be more happy with my decision to book the La Fonda.

We arrived without reservations at 9:30pm and we got a room. We asked for a quiet room so the front desk put us away from other people which was very nice. The room was very comfortable but very small so the next morning we asked to change to a larger room and they upgraded us and they moved our stuff for us. The new room was much larger with a separate sitting alcove. We were super happy with the new room. We extended our stay twice because we really liked this hotel.

The reception area of the hotel is busy - with shops, restaurants, and people. It feels like a hub of a plaza - in a very nice way. When we went to our room, we didn't hear any of this nose, surprisingly.

The rooms have tile floor with a big area rug under the bed. The bed is super comfortable. The bathroom has a shower, sink, and a toilet. The shower is large and very nice but water does get outside. We put the bath mat at the entrance to the shower and it absorbed any water that got out. They provide shampoo and hair conditioner, and they are really nice quality!

We did not hear our neighbors but we heard the mechanical equipment noise in the first room, #459, and our second room, #114, was next to the ice machine so we hear the hum of that. It wasn't annoyingly loud but we heard it.

The rooms had a microwave oven and a refrigerator in a very nice cabinet with cubby holes for your stuff.

All of the hotel personnel we came in contact with were very helpful and super friendly.

We are very happy we stayed here and if we are in Santa Fe again, we would stay here.

I was at the LaFonda for a conference and had arranged for a hospitality suite with food and a bar for 2 nights. The staff - all of the staff - were just excellent. I never had to wait more than 5 minutes for any request and most of the time it was much less. The food was good, the suite and other rooms were just perfect. I would recommend this hotel in the heart of the plaza for anything from a vacation to business meetings to conferences. Thank you LaFonda staff for making the week absolutely enjoyable and stress free.

Room Tip: The suites in the Terraza side of the hotel are very spacious with balconies. Rooms near the St. Fra...

We checked in on a Friday afternoon, and the parking lot staff made a space for us since our truck is a crew cab. How's that for starting a week at one of the nicest hotels I have stayed at in years? A bellman helped us immediately and we checked into our room for a conference in the old section of the hotel near the Bell Tower bar. That was the only downside to this stay, since there was a little noise from food carts on the fifth floor that filtered down to us in Room 452.

The bar was lovely at sunset. Great margaritas and appetizers to share. . . The Hotel's restaurant is outstanding and we had a hospitality suite for the event and catering was superb.

Overall, we had a fabulous time at La Fonda and will stay with them again the next time we come to Santa Fe.

Room Tip: Stay in the new section of the hotel if you can. Nearer the Cathedral.
