“Exquisite Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

It was our pleasure to have been able to spend one night at this luxurious hotel right in the thick of things in Santa Fe. We were impressed with every aspect of this beautiful old hotel which was being renovated yet you wouldn't notice. There was no construction noise whatsoever. The staff were friendly and very helpful and we had breakfast and dinner in the beautiful La Plazuela at La Fonda restaurant (huevos rancheros for breakfast and steak fajita for dinner). It was comforting to see that we had a concierge desk right near our room which made things easier when checking out. Free and secure parking and free Wi-Fi were also important to us on our 5-state and 9-night road trip throughout the southwest. I loved the furnishings of the hotel and the beds and bed linen were deliciously comfortable. Our room was wonderfully spacious and we had a little balcony which looked out at the cathedral behind the hotel. The bathroom is exceptionally beautiful and their toiletries are top notch. I loved the upmarket stores in the hotel and spent much time looking around. I would highly recommend you consider this hotel as a place to stay. It's central and convenient to all things in Santa Fe as well as being a famous landmark. We felt so "grown up" and I cannot wait to come back for a second visit. I will be posting our travel story on my website (hopefully by April 20, 2013) if you'd like more information.

I'm sure La Fonda gets a lot of good reviews as a hotel, but I would like to report on their performance at a special event we attended there last month. It was a 70th birthday celebration held in the New Mexico Room and attended by about 100 people. The most remarkable thing was the exceptional food and service...almost never happens with a big buffet in my experience. We were greeted by a server with a tray full of margaritas...the rest of the evening followed just as delightfully! Considering a hotel where you can hold a special event in Santa Fe? I recommend the La Fonda.

My Aunt & I spent a lovely time at La Fonda over the Easter Holidays for three nights. Yes there is construction going on in the hotel, but since we were out and about all day, the construction did not effect us. Our room with two compfy, delicious queen beds was spacious, great towels and robes. A huge closet for our luggage too. Location is outstanding. Right now the pool & hot tub are closed along with the rooftop bar - and they should be open in the weeks ahead. Our last morning we had breakfast in the lovely restaurant and had trout & eggs - a must - only in Santa Fe - so yummy!!! Don't miss out on a walking tour of Santa Fe which begins in the lobby on specific dates. The concierge staff are gems!!! The front desk associates are wonderful too, very helpful. We love La Fonda!!!

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room if available, spacious and sunny. We were on the second floor.

Super great location to step out and walk around the plaza. Old interesting Spanish style but the hallways seem dated and overdone with too much art. Rooms are ok, clean, a couple are spartan. The pool has been closed each of the three times we stayed. The hot tub is a strange crescent shape design and seems outdated. If being on the plaza is your priority this is the place otherwise many nicer choices are not too far away.

We stayed for two nights at the La Fonda. The rooms are definitely in need of renovation. We knew that the hotel was under renovation, but did not expect to hear jack hammers up til 9 pm. The noise started again Sunday morning at 7:30 am. Unbelievable! Also, the windows were filthy from construction dirt and blocked by scaffolding. When we reported the noise at the front desk, we were given free parking - big deal! Price was way too high for all of the inconveniences we had to put up with during their construction.

I apologize for the unexpected disruptions associated with our renovation project. Thank you for taking the time to note your experiences – we greatly appreciate any feedback regarding the construction at hand. Typically, our contractors complete any task that requires loud equipment by 6 p.m. I’m very sorry that there was still noise occurring past that hour during your stay and that your exchange with our front desk staff was disappointing. Again, thank you for bringing these issues to my attention. In the future I hope that we will have the opportunity to host you in one of our remodeled rooms.

I preface this by saying we have never stayed overnight at La Fonda. That being said, we spend a lot of time in and around the La Fonda building every time we go to Santa Fe. La Fonda is an old historic inn and for that it is worth a walk through the lobby and halls to see the old architecture and southwestern decor. You can also get a fabulous meal there. The lobby buffet bar is excellent for an informal lunch/drink and a welcome break from walking and shopping. The atrium restaurant is lovely and the food is good too. I do recommend making a reservation there. Beside that, the halls are full of art work and the adjoining arcade shops are some of the best on the Plaza. The La Fonda complex takes up an entire block. As an extra, the covered parking garage is an excellent, centrally located facility that is reasonable and safe. Friends say that the hotel rooms are currently undergoing some extensive and long over due renovations at this time but I understand that there are some rate specials and that the construction crews have limited work hours.

La Fonda Hotel is in Santa Fe right at the corner of the downtown Plaza. La Fonda is built on the site of the first hotel in Santa Fe. It is still the anchor tenant on the Plaza and the original gathering place in Santa Fe. We stayed here in 2002 by coincidence from reading a New Mexico guide in the car on the way. This time we returned 11 years later to spend more time in Santa Fe and see if things were as nice as we remembered.

I booked the hotel in December for a March 11th and 12th stay. In January I got emails informing us that there would be ongoing construction but that it would not impact our stay. We flew in to Albuquerque and drove the one hour from there to Santa Fe, arriving at the hotel about 2:30 pm. Our room was ready at that time and we had a standard room on the 1st floor. We love boutique hotels that preserve the local style of construction and La Fonda is both familiar and luxurious. Wi-Fi and cool tile décor coexist with some old fashioned touches and art deco, southwest style. The hotel staff was as pleasant and helpful as we remembered, the margarita was even better.

We had lots of Mexican and New Mexican food in Santa Fe and the main restaurant at La Fonda had the best chili rellenos of the trip. Carlos made a magnificent margarita. They had some nice draft beers as well. The façade construction did not affect us as the work was on the other side of the hotel from our room and only during the day. There is a big fireplace with a fire going just off the restaurant. The hotel has at least a dozen fine shops available from the lobby area and more outside. The décor in the lobby, restaurants and hallways is just spectacular and you can only get a taste in just two days. We had breakfasts in the French Café, tres bon.

Santa Fe was great. We could walk to everything and only drove to get to a Bikram yoga studio about two miles from the hotel. We had been to the Indian and Art museums in 2002 and did the history and Georgia O’Keefe museums this time. In addition to La Fonda we had lunch at Tia Sophia’s (so did the Governor of New Mexico) and the Atomic Café; both were delicious with reasonable prices. Dinner was at La Fonda and the Blue Corn café. Shopping is phenomenal we bought mostly from the Indians at the Governors Palace.

We only had a full day Monday and wished we had three to really see the most of the plaza area. Weather in mid March was freezing at night and 60/70 by afternoon. Definitely dress in layers. Sunsets were great stars were bold.

Room Tip: Sunday to Thursday were the best rates. We liked both the first floor and the third floor. We stayed...
