“Excellent historic hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

We stayed at the Hotel La Fonda in March 2012 on a girls' road trip through New Mexico. What a beautiful hotel! The lobby is gorgeous, and our room was beautiful as well. Very spacious and comfortable, with cute little touches of color, paint all over. The hotel is right in the middle of historic downtown and you can easily walk to shops and restaurants from here. There is also a parking garage next door, which we used. We also ate one night in the restaurant downstairs, and found the food to be delicious.

On the most fantastic trip of my life it was our luck to be helped by Dave the Bellman. We were just passing through on an extravagant celebration trip. The weather, the location and the mood were all perfect. Dave helped us out on arrival, and saved us SERIOUS time. We were able to enjoy mass on time, see all the incredible sights, and relax and enjoy our wonderful view and room in the whimsical snow that decided to bless us at the eventful hour. We'll always be back to La Fonda but take the extra step to ask for Dave the Bellman.

**** Eat at Arcos de la Frontera Buffet in the hotel !!!! (Even if you don't stay at La Fonda) *****
**** In La Plazuela Restaurant, Get the ROASTED CASHEW CAKE. OMG!! (and very light) ***** **** AWESOME. The scoops of ice cream in the restaurant are PERFECT! The ice cream melts in your mouth, but freezes the bottom of the spoon. The scoops are firm, frozen and fantastically creamy. Do it! Blood Orange Sorbet. AWESOME

Room Tip: La Terraza for a splurge.

We did a getaway weekend to Santa Fe and the La Fonda. The hotel has some really great prices right now and we thought it would be fun. It was...
Our room was beautiful. A real wood-burning fireplace and a very comfortable bed. Some of the fixtures are dated, but they are doing renovations at the property and hopefully are addressing some of these minor points.
Like other hotels, one has to contend with stairs. Of course, there are bell services, but most folks just grit it and haul their bags...bang...bang...bang up and down the stairs. Nothing unusual in these older buildings.
I'd recommend this delightful hotel while the price is so right!!! You won't be disappointed.

This was our first visit to Santa Fe, and I planned our hotel stay months in advance due to our arrival just before the annual Indian Market. We loved our room in the Bell Tower section. From our balcony we viewed the low lying mountains, outdoor markets, and the Loretto Chapel. We even used the fireplace, in August!. I loved exploring the hallways filled with art and historic posters. Hotel staff were great, we enjoyed eating several delicious meals at the restaurant, and enjoyed relaxing with a drink in the Bell Tower Lounge. This hotel is filled with ambiance and conveniently located within walking distance to many cultural activities and shops.

This hotel boasts the best location in Santa Fe if you want to be right on the plaza. But it is truly a tourist trap, filled with lots of wedding parties, tons of shops on the first floor, and rooms that are very much in need of renovation (something that is happening now). I can't say we had a bad stay at the hotel but compared to other options we have tried which are only a few blocks away from the plaza, this hotel does not provide comparable value. The desk staff are very busy not just checking people in but monitoring the incredible level of activity in the lobby. The French bakery on site is amazing and well worth a visit even if you don't stay at the hotel. Simply put, this is just a place to stay in a good location. There are no special services or amenities. The hotel just relies on its location and to some that is enough.

We just spent three nights at La Fonda over New Year's. The hotel was filled to capacity. We had a beautiful room on La Terraza. The room was lovely and the bathroom was enormous. The room was spotlessly clean. We had a beautiful balcony with a great view of the Cathedral. A lovely breakfast was delivered each morning to our room. The gas fireplace kept us toasty. Even with the parties going on nearby, our room was absolutely silent. The bed was very comfy. We had a great meal at La Plazuela and late night drinks in the bar. Service was exceptional as always. We appreciated the extra service in La Terraza and we will definitely try to book there on our next visit. We inadvertently left behind a box. Housekeeping found it right away and the hotel repackaged it and sent it to us promptly. Many thanks to Brenda and the rest of the staff for another great stay.

To those booking this hotel for the first time, keep in mind that they have a wide variety of rooms, all differently configured. It makes sense to call to reserve exactly the kind of room you want, especially now while the hotel is under renovation. Some of the rooms are smaller and they have an old-timey charm that may be lost on some travelers.

My husband and stayed at La Fonda for four nights. As far as walking and getting around the town, the location was great. We had a massage at the spa in the hotel that was great- It was a bit pricey, but the hotel was tasteful and quiet- the paintings around the hotel were quite impressive. Our room was very clean, but the hallway leading into our room could use a little maintenace. The restaurant's breakfast was delicious and we really enjoyed our time- It was a bit chilly for April so thinking May might be a better time to go- The firplaces around the hotel were fantastic, burning native pinon that smells amazing!
Sunset drinks on the roof top are a must- We also enjoyed the live music downstairs- There are a couple divey bars very close(2minute walk) that were a hoot post dinner- if you can't get into the Santa Fe scene.

Room Tip: Don't splurge for the upgrade, our room was nice, and I have a feeling it isn't worth it-
