We had planned to camp, but decided that wouldn't work this time, so looked for a hotel that would give us more than the typical cheap family motel, where we always feel like we're paying for more than we get. The Double Tree was a good choice. The only negative could be that the rooms and bathroom sink area are small. The 2 beds are double beds, not queens. The sink area is just a single sink, not much counter space. That could be an issue if you're traveling with teens. We were only traveling with an 11 year old, so it worked great for us. There is no free breakfast at this hotel, but our room had a larger-than-usual frig and a microwave, and they worked well and were quiet (frig was inside a cupboard),saved us lots of $$ on breakfasts. There is room service, which we didn't use. The hotel has a very nice lobby with fireplace, good for relaxing at night or for reading the paper, drinking coffee (free) in the morning while waiting for your family to wake up. Rooms have patios or small balcony's, some on the ground floor open to the parking lot. We had a 4th floor room, felt very secure. The best part for kids is the pool- it's two small pools connected by a channel which passes into and out of the hot tub area. Windows all around, so parents in the tub can do a decent job keeping an eye on the kids in the pool. Small but a lot of fun.
The hotel staff was friendly and helpful- they accommodated our early arrival, supplied us with items we didn't bring along (shaving cream, etc), gave us many very good recommendations for restaurants. Location: a few doors down the road from Target and Albertson's grocery store, Sonic burger, Panera, S'bucks. Near the south end of town so if you're returning from a daytrip to Taos, etc, you can take the bypass and avoid traffic. Easy 10 mn drive to downtown. Decent rate online with a good cancellation policy.
