“Inn and Spa at Loretto: Highly recommended laid back luxury!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2012

We stayed 3 nights, July 30th - Aug 1st and left wishing we could stay longer. The staff was genuinely welcoming and really made us feel appreciated. Our bed was super comfortable, shower & bathroom spotless and attractive though a bit tight. Reviewers who complained about smallish rooms seem to forget that we are in the heart of old Santa Fe in an old historic hotel! The wood finishes are real Mesquite and the use of indigenous New Mexican woods, hand patinas on hammered metal was attractive. Decor of the hotel itself is even better - authentic Santa Fe style and loaded with fine art and period historic photos. Our AC worked perfectly; also our room had french doors to a semi private patio by the pool, allowing a cool mountain breeze carrying sounds of native birds to float into the room each evening. Very relaxing! We can't wait to go back.

Husband and I just returned from 3 nights at Inn at Loretto, booked through Hotels.com. After booking and paying I found a less expensive rate advertised on Hotels.com website and, to its credit, we were issued a refund of the difference. Upon arriving, we were greeted brusquely and told we had no reservation even though we produced a printed copy of our e-mail confirmation - it was brushed aside as "this isn't ours". Turned out that the reservation was there, just not initially found. We paid for a superior room through Hotels.com and don't have any idea what we actually got. Our room #426 was very small and the miniscule balcony with no privacy at all faced into the blazing morning sun and was really not very useful. Previous complaints about no place to put "stuff" in the bathroom and the odd placement of the closet are very true. The bed was comfortable enough but the obnoxiously loud whoosing of the air conditioning unit was enough to leave us feeling sleep deprived at the end of our stay.
Luminaria Restaurant is excellent - we would highly recommend whether staying at Loretto or not; the pool area is nice but very sun intensive and could benefit from more umbrellas for shade; the bar area and shops are very good. Main reason to ever stay here is the LOCATION. It is superb. We would probably stay here again but would opt to spend more for a junior suite to have more space.

Thank you for this very detailed review, it is always helpful to hear the specifics of a guest’s experience and is very valuable for other travelers to read. I appreciate your comments regarding Luminaria, The Living Room, and our retail corridor. With that said, I am incredibly sorry for the dispute regarding your reservation. Also, I would like to point out that Room 426, since it has a balcony, is in fact considered a superior room. I regret that this did not meet your expectations. My team and I take guest reviews very seriously as this helps with our continued training efforts. Thank you again.

Sincerely,

We stayed at the Inn and Spa at Loretto July 27-Aug. 1. What a disappointment! Despite the claims of the ads & rankings & the attractiveness of the public facilities, our rooms were dismal. Tiny bathrooms with no place to put toiletries, the door to the bath opens against the tiny closet door. Woodwork & furniture are black. Dark and dated. A-C is borderline, especially on 4th & 5th floors. No turndown service, no newspaper to the rooms. I ordered the continental breakfast for room service twice--once was breads in a sealed cellophane bag; today was a lovely plate with warm bran muffins and Danish + beautiful fresh fruit. Same price for both. High daily resort charge & parking add to the fairly good price. However, location 1 1/2 blocks from plaza & opera shuttle pickup make this the best value. We will reluctantly stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for east or north side; avoid corner rooms and top floor.

This hotel was a great surprise. Clean, well-located, friendly staff, well-kept property, and great spacious rooms. My first sign that this was going to be a good experience was the friendliness and responsiveness of the valet staff. My room service was slightly delayed and I got a call of apology and a complimentary glass of champagne. I highly recommend this hotel,

great restaurant and service. Rooms were okay. no air conditioning in the summer. I agree with other reviewers that the rooms are a bit dark, but the restaurant and pool are the best in sante fe. The bed was comfortable, but the room was a bit cramped. Don't let that deter you from staying here, though. Great amenities.

Room Tip: Get a room with a balcony

Stayed at the Inn at Loretto for a conference. The rooms are nice, especially if you get a balcony, but there is no counter space in the bathroom and the closet doors are awkward. The Inn is located in the historic downtown Santa Fe with tons of sites within walking distance and the staff are all very helpful.

We just got back from a three day-two night stay at the Inn at Loretto. Overall we enjoyed the stay. The architecture of the Inn is gorgeous, and the polished tile floors create a unique ambiance. The lounge leads to the outdoor pool, where we enjoyed a couple afternoons sipping a blueberry cocktail that was tasty and reasonably priced.
We dined there one evening, outdoors at the Luminaria, but since we had had a large lunch, we stuck to the appetizers, which were incredibly tasty! The service was friendly and competent.
The reasons I can't give our experience a "very good" rating are as follows. The second night we had cocktails by the pool. After our bill had been delivered, we walked the bill back into the bar and paid cash to the bartender. This confused our waitperson, I guess, and as we were walking out she rushed after us thinking that we had not paid. It was awkward. The same night after our excellent appetizers, we tried to get tip-change for our very good waitperson, and were told "we don't keep a lot of change." Eventually we were given change to tip, but coupled with the previous incident, it was off-putting. We decided the whole philosophy of the Inn is that they would prefer that you sign a room tab and not use cash. If we go back, we'll do that.
The last weird thing was that when we were getting out of our room to check out, we looked under the bed and found a pair of shoes! They weren’t ours!
Oh, and the valet parking was circus-like, and $18 a night. One in our travel group found that the valet left his driver's side window open. As luck would have it, it had rained and his leather seat was soaked.
The location of the Inn by the town square, the good food, and the ambiance might draw us back to Inn at Loretto. We will also consider other options the next time we visit this beautiful city.
Sincerely,
Ray and Maggie Davis

Room Tip: If you get a balcony, get one that doesn't overlook the roof.

Mr. and Mrs. Davis,

Thank you for taking the time to highlight the architecture and ambiance of our hotel. I take pride in the fact that you enjoyed cocktails by the pool during the afternoon and enjoyed Luminaria in the evening.

With that said, I am incredibly sorry for the issues you both encountered while staying with us. Our philosophy is not for guests to only charge expenses to their room, in fact we accept all methods of payment. I have to regrettably admit that there are quite a few guests that simply walk away without paying, which is probably the reason why your server was so anxious, as they are responsible for their tickets. I regret, though, that she communicated this poorly.

I also must apologize for the item left under your bed and for the valet’s mistake. This is not acceptable. Your comments are valued and assist us in our continued training efforts. Please feel free to contact me directly.

Sincerely,

Stefan Huber
