“Weekend in Santa Fe”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2014

This little motel is well within walking distance of the Plaza. If your looking for a clean place to sleep, shower and then head out, then this place is perfect. NOT fancy one bit, but the convenience to the Plaza and the price make up for the lack of luxury. The staff were all very friendly and there is a little restaurant attached to it that serves great burgers & homemade chips. The cost of parking is $8 a night. If you're going for luxury, romance or even atmosphere then this may not be the place for you. If your looking for convenience, great price and a place to sleep then consider Desert Inn.

Before finalizing our travel plans for a recent trip to Santa Fe over the recent MLK Jr. Holiday weekend, I did a lot of “shopping around” on the Internet for hotel accommodations. I selected Garrett’s Desert Inn based upon the location, rate and photos on their web site.

As soon as we walked into Room 104, we realized that the photos on the web site did not in any way match our actual accommodations! Unlike the newly renovated rooms in the photos, our room hadn’t been updated in decades. The soap dish in the shower was so old that the chrome-plating had been rubbed off exposing the brass below!

The other short-comings we found during our three-day stay were:
1) Only one accessible outlet that had an “illegal” six outlet device installed.
2) An inoperative alarm clock.
3) Peeling paint in the bath and peeling wallpaper in the bedroom.
4) A bed-side wall sconce that was pulling away from the wall.
5) The handle for the cold water in the shower was unattached.
6) When we had problems with the TV on Sunday, we went down to the front desk to report the issue. The desk clerk, Tiffany, was not at all supportive of getting the matter addressed promptly. After waiting for the “maintenance man” to arrive, we attempted to call the front desk but found that the phone in our room was unplugged and the wall jack was behind a piece of very heavy furniture.

Adding insult to injury!

A day or two after our disappointing stay at Garrett’s, I received an online survey about our experience which I answered in detail. On 2/23, I received a very nice response from Eric at Panetiere Marketing Advisors. In an effort to address the very disappointing conditions that we experienced during our stay at Garrett’s, Eric generously offered us a refund of one night’s room charge and a complimentary night’s stay at a future time.

Five days later, I emailed Eric to take him up on the offer of a complimentary night’s stay. After not getting a response from Eric in over a week, I emailed him once again. That day, I received a reply from Eric stating that PMA no longer represented Garrett’s and that he would see if the motel would make good on his previous offers.

To this date, I have not received any additional communications from PMA or Garrett’s!

Room Tip: Avoid Room 104!

We were there last weekend. First and foremost, it is a great location, only two blocks from the Square. And the price is right. We paid $82 for a king room. That being said, go into the stay with the correct perspective. This is not one of the nice properties with a kiva fireplace in the corner. It's a mostly clean, aging, decent room. Don't require anything further and you will not be disappointed. We loved the location and spent our extra money on good food and shopping! Also, the girl at the front counter was not at all friendly, not just to me, but to others I saw check in.

To be frank, all we were looking for was a suitable place to sleep - and for that, Garrett's was a very good choice. If you're looking for a resort, or plan to spend a lot of time in the hotel, then you should go elsewhere. The place is aging, and rooms could stand to be completely redone and modernized - and no doubt rates would be modernized as well. Rooms were clean, quiet when we were there. Bedroom was big enough to walk around in. Our bathroom window overlooked the Sante Fe "River". We knew about the parking fee from the website (and there was a sign about the fee as we drove in). The worse thing to us was that the wi-fi was sluggish when other folks were up using it. We plan to stay here again.

Room Tip: two floors, no elevator

Wow! I have to say, after reading the other reviews on this property, we were very pleasantly surprised! We've been coming to Santa since the mid 80's and have stayed in just about every hotel/inn near the plaza and down Cerrillos Road and were leery about this one. We had super saver fares on major airline and needed a Santa Fe Weekend. We stayed in room 212 and found it to be very clean and functional. The bathroom was very clean (No mold or mildew and in great condition). We had a flat screen TV in the room (a little small) but we're not in Santa Fe to watch TV. Please do not compare this property to the high end properties near the plaza. However, this is an upper end tourist class hotel that the new owners have clearly decided to breathe some new life into and it shows! The one thing that did bug me was the $8.00 parking charge. I don't recall seeing this on the website, however, parking is limited near the plaza and still a value, they should just state there is a parking charge. If you want a value near the plaza, this is a good place.

Beware of the $8 parking fee, It is not included in your room rate, and is not explained at the time of check in. Although it is only a small charge it should have been explained at the time of check in. This is not a negative review, just a heads up for future guest. The hotel was OK for the money.

Thank you for giving all our guests a heads up about an $8 parking charge - 55% less than that of our neighbor hotel.

We have notice of the charge everywhere that we can find to put it and we should certainly have mentioned it when you checked in. It is part oif all agents' training. Back to training.

My apologies for our failure to discuss it.

Thank you for staying with us at our Rt 66 motel in Santa Fe,
Phil, GM

Given the negative reviews, I was somewhat reluctant to book this hotel. However, I needed to be near the Plaza and had to have two rooms. So, I didn't want to spend tons of money on the nearby upscale hotels. After staying, I am asking myself, why the negative reviews? I used two rooms, a king and a double queen. Both were clean and had attractive southwestern style furniture. Yes, the fixtures are old, but functional. The exterior is well maintained. The king room even had a flatscreen TV. WiFi was fine. All this for $60/night, three blocks from the Plaza! I have stayed at the Inn at Loretto, which is literally across a street and small creek from Garrett's. The Inn is spectacular, but nearly three times the price! And parking there is about $16/night. I do agree that charging $8/night for parking at Garrett's seems a bit chintzy. But, given the room price and location, I don't think one can complain too much. One past reviewer suggested that the owners tear the place down and build anew. Sure. And then we would have another $200/night luxury hotel. So, get your expectations under control and give it a try. I can't speak for all rooms, but our two were fine for the price. By the way, the on site restaurant, The Bite, is very good. It is a reincarnation of the well known and much loved Bobcat Bite that had been on the east side of Santa Fe. Our breakfasts were excellent and the service was exceptional.

Room Tip: No elevator, so request a first floor room if you can't climb stairs.

Thank you for kindly understanding our hospitality role here in downtown Santa Fe - clean, affordable, Rt 66 motel - helpful folks, and leaving plenty of money to enjoy all the great experiences of our world here.

Yes, indeed, a developer was talking to us about doing just that - tear down and build yet another luxury hotel. Luxury we are not, affordable and downtown, yes.

Many thanks,
Phil, GM
