“Solid hotel, Clean, Convenient - best Value in Oldtown Santa Fe”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

Just finished my stay at Garrett's and I must say - It fit the bill perfectly. I travel at least 2-3x per month for work/pleasure and I mostly stay at nice to really nice hotels. Yes, Garrett's is old and a little threadworn (old outside hallway carpets, little broken things, bumps and scrapes to exterior - interior) However: bathroom was immaculately clean, shower and bed just fine. It's not a romantic hotel, more of an old motel - but the location is EXCELLENT! Right across from the Capital and literally a 7 minute walk to the heart of Old Santa Fe plaza. Really, if you want a spa or a hotel to 'lounge about' you could do better, but if you are in Santa Fe to enjoy all that the oldtown/plaza have to offer, then who cares if your room is fancy? This is a great place to stay - to get out and see the wonder of SFe. Parking is a very affordable $8 per day/night, and that is key to Santa Fe staying, as you'll want to both walk everywhere and leave your car behind most of the time, but have it readily available for out-of-Santa Fe side trips. There really is no better value in the heart of this beautiful city. There is also a nice pool, and the families/kids around seemed pretty pleased. I found this comfortable, clean and very worthwhile place to explore the city from.

If one travels to sante fe you know the hotels on the square are pricey but very nice, however this one even though not on the square but walking distance to it under delivers in room decor . You a want room that feels cozy and sante fe style. The bathroom tile is old but quaint . None of the decor matched!! Nothing,!this hotel could do better, the artwork, bedding , bland paint colors, skimpy pillows., old 80's lamps. Nothing inviting about room at all. I guess if this doesn't matter to you,it's at least clean and close to square.

This is the third year that my wife and I have stayed here. They've been approved to do needed renovations and I hope the charm of the place is not lost. As others have said, the motel is a bit tatty but it is clean, close to the Plaza, and has VERY reasonable rates and parking fee. Our bathroom was spotless and, yes, don't put anything heavy on the glass shelf over the toilet! There was a stain on the underside of one bedspread and the carpet shows stains that may have been there since the 50's but, as far as I can tell, we didn't bring anything home that we don't already have here! My wife enjoyed the heated outdoor pool and we both enjoyed a quiet night's sleep coming and going from Arizona. We look forward to another visit next year.

Room Tip: Choose a ground level room in the middle.

It is older and a little run down, but we had no problems. We live near by and stay in Santa Fe occasionally so that we don't have to worry about a DUI. It is an easy walk to the downtown plaza area. For the price you can't beat it in the plaza area. I wish their bar was open, but there's other bars nearby.

To start with the positives, the hotel is in an excellent location. You can walk to everything in Santa Fe from it. The price was at least $100 less per night than the nicer hotels close by, which adds up after a few nights. The parking was also a deal compared to the other downtown hotels I priced - $8 compared to $20. Also has free wifi.

The rooms are clean but extremely dated. We had issues with the hair dryer overheating after a few minutes and we would have to wait for it to cool down. I haven't seen a TV like the one in the room since the mid-90's. The rugs, beds, linens are old and nothing to write home about. The bathroom is dated. Our toilet leaked all over when we arrived, but they were attentive and did send someone up to fix it within two hours.

The location and price are what sold us on the hotel. If you don't mind very dated rooms that smell a little musty, and you enjoy a good deal in a great location, this hotel is for you. If you enjoy the luxury of a 5 star, check out the more expensive ones down the road.

Dear hmk24,

We really appreciate the fact that you saw the great value that is the Garrett's Desert Inn! We do have the perfect location, just 2 blocks from the Plaza and , as you say, $100 lower than other nearby hotels.

I was also happy to hear that while you did have a problem with a leaky toilet, that our staff was able to quickly respond and rectify the situation.

Thank you for also pointing out that our rooms are very clean. We are in need of some updating and we will begin a hotel renovation over the next few months, refurbishing and modernizing our guest rooms. We are excited to be getting a face lift!

We will still continue to be a tremendous value in the downtown are and will still provide a clean, comfortable and updated guest room, while delivering great value and service.

Please come back and see us again and experience our new rooms! Thank you so much for your review. We appreciate all of our guests comments and feedback.

Best Regards,
Director of Sales

This hotel has a desperate need for some attention! Improvements in cleanliness are essential and it needs a complete update (carpet, furnishings, etc.) The room smelled of smoke, carpet was stained, bedspread, shams, and bathroom were dirty!!! I checked out after 5 minutes of my arrival. It was unfortunate that this occurred at 10 pm, because it was very difficult to find another hotel room, but absolutely necessary. Don't recommend staying here until they do a total makeover! I am awaiting word if I will get reimbursed for my pre-paid reservation.

Dear Guest,

I would like to sincerely apologize to you for the many problems you encountered while visiting our hotel. It is absolutely unacceptable to have had those problems in any guest room. Please know that this is not how we operate this hotel. We do our utmost to maintain an absolutely spotless facility. It appears we did drop the ball this time.

I would like to tell you that we are scheduled for a spectacular renovation over the next few months. We have an amazing location in Santa Fe, just 2 blocks off the Plaza, and with our soon to be newly refurbished hotel, and at a great value, would like to invite you back and allow us another opportunity to redeem ourselves.

I do thank you for your candor in your review and while it is difficult to learn, it is truly the only way, we can get better and better. I have shared your comments with our housekeeping staff and room inspectors.

Again, my sincerest apologies for your experience. We remain at your service and welcome you back to experience our improved hospitality.

Sincerely,
Hotel Director of Sales

I live in Santa Fe and often have out of town guests stay here. I also hold day long conferences here. The location is amazing...the facilities are more than adequate...clean and sufficiently well maintained.

This is not a 'romantic hideaway' by any stretch but it IS a great value for this town which can be very expensive. Great swimming pool...wonderful in the warmer months...easy walking to high-end restaurants OR the family budget fare.

Also they have been in the process of opening their restaurant space. The space has had many lives...but this time the Inn is going to be the proprietor...we are all hoping for the best in this endeavor and as a guest/conference attendee it will be a major PLUS.

Room Tip: if possible do not have a room that backs onto Alameda Street...

Dear Yosta,

Thank you so much for your lovely remarks about our property. Yes, it is true, in the very highly priced Santa Fe Downtown market, Garrett's Desert Inn is clean, affordable and a wonderful place to stay. Thank you so much for allowing us to host your out of town guests!

We do have very nice meeting facilities and I thank you for booking your conferences with us. We appreciate it!

We have some exciting things happening at the hotel. As you mentioned, we are working on getting the restaurant operation up and running and also we will begin a fantastic renovation of our guest rooms and public areas.

I am very proud of our staff as we do enjoy making each guests feel welcomed and cared for. We are looking forward to welcoming you back to the hotel and again, many thanks for taking the time to write a nice review.

Please let us know how we may be of further service to you!

Sincerely,
Director of Sales
