“A beautiful hotel, one I did not want to leave!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2010

Check-in was quick and efficient, our rooms were gorgeous, in a traditional style and with beautiful Mexican-themed hangings and colours. We were greeted with complementary glasses of sherry and proper cups of tea (a must for English travellers abroad!) which we took to a little table in the shade by the pool. The breakfast buffet was extensive, and excellent. The meal at Del Charro in the evening was also very good, the whole atmosphere was lovely and the staff at the hotel desk extremely helpful, offering cards of introduction to local restaurants (gaining us complementary appetisers), having stamps for sale, and advising us on the best places to go and the times and cost of the town tour bus. Parking is mostly in the shade, and the place is a riot of colour from troughs of plants along the balconies and pots of plants and colourful bedding throughout the grounds. The hotel is close to the town centre with all its amenities, safe to walk around at night and with lots of interesting shops to look at. Would happily stay in Santa Fe for at least a week, and definitely at the Inn of the Governors.

Very attractive, comfortable rooms, attractive public spaces. Good location. The moderate cost includes big breakfast buffet and parking. Staff is pleasant. We extended our stay. The only negative was that the computers for guest's use were limited in functionality. Some snacks are available throughout the day. Many restaurants nearby.

Although I had been to Santa Fe several times in the past, I always had stayed elsewhere, sometimes on the Plaza and sometimes off of it. A friend had recommended the Inn of the Governors so we gave it a try on a recent visit. The location is excellent for the Plaza area, the nearby government buildings (do not miss going to the state capitol) and numerous restaurants. Staying at the hotel means that you do not have to struggle with finding a place to park, which can be a challenge.
Thisis an older property with lots of character, which means that the floorplan of the building is kind of smal and chopped up. We stayed in a King room with an "inside" entrance but no fireplace, which I think is the next step up from the cheapest room. I put quotations around inside because the corridor itself is covered but open to the outside, and feels like outside, during the day, but they close the door at night. It was average size: big enough for a bed, armoire with TV and refrigerator, two chairs, and a small desk, but no extra space. The size of the room does not invite you to spend extra time there. The bathroom was small and vintage but, like the room, spotlessly clean. I looked at a room across the hall, and it was significantly larger. The southwestern decor was very nice; the accessories are top quality and fit well in the room. The television needed replacement at this price point.
Check-in was smooth and friendly. When we checked in, the public areas of the hotel were crowded and somewhat congested. It was tea-and-sherry time, but that did not seem to be the complete cause.
The included breakfast was great, much better than I expected. It had nearly anything anyone might want, all top quality and well prepared. Hot dishes included two versions of scrambled eggs, tortillas, green chili sauce, bacon and sausage, potatoes, and pancakes or waffles. There were numerous fresh fruit choices, yogurt, cereals and pastries, and servers offered juice. As a tea drinker, I loved having pots in the coffee and tea area for making a pot of tea rather than dunking a bag in a cup.
Room cleaning was exemplary. Our room was always cleaned, and cleaned very well, when we wanted it. to be. You can choose partial or full cleaning; we experienced both.
I saw some PCs for guest use, but we did not use them. The hotel wireless was a little iffy, but good enough.
I would stay here again without hesitation, but unless it was summer would try to get a little larger room/room with a fireplace.

I originally booked a better room direct with the hotel but found that I could save a substantial amount through booking a bog standard room through one of the internet sites and so settled for a standard double with verandah entrance. Room was absolutely fine - no fireplace or other frills but a perfect base for our two-night first-vist to Santa Fe. Nice lobby area. Didn't use the pool mainly because it's quite small. Breakfasts were great with a variation in hot dishes each day. parking wasn't as bad as I had been expecting after several negative comments - possibly due to it being less busy in September and also perhaps due to us coming from England where spaces are usually tighter. Location was right next to old centre which makes it very good value.
We had a lunch and dinner in Del Charro which is attached to the hotel - very convenient and good value.

I'm always a little concerned when I see a great disparity between reviews of the same hotel. In this case I think I know why; there are some rooms I would not want to stay in, particularly the ones under the overhang created by the later addition. However, our room was wonderful and I can recommend this eclectic hotel wholeheartedly.

We spent 3 nights here in late August. We booked a deluxe room with a fireplace, balcony and sitting area and were upgraded to a junior suite. This gave us a larger living area still with a fireplace and balcony. The room was comfortable and well laid out, if a little dated. We had all the necessary amenities except for a room safe.

The positives:

-Price-you can't touch a comparable room in old town for this price
-Wood burning fireplace
-2 sink bathroom
-Balcony with a distant view of the mountains
-Location-2 blocks from the main square
-Good American breakfast buffet (included) on the covered restaurant patio
-Excelelent massage by individuals recommended on the hotel website

The drawbacks:
-No room safe (minor inconvenience)
-Balcony also overlooks the parking lot
-Not enough on-site parking (at times-especially late at night)

We would definitely stay here again.

It was my first time in Santa Fe and was so amazed at how lovely the Inn of the Governors was. The complimentary breakfast buffets were a daily decadent delight. The bar food (grilled cheese and homemade tomato soup and hamburger) were so unbelievably priced for the value received, not to mention delicious! The in-room fireplaces are a plus. I loved the open air lobby that opens up to the patio and pool. It was so conveniently close the the plaza. What an enchanting hotel! I will be back! Keep up the good work. Whatever you're doing is working!

We planned a trip to Santa Fe in June and did not know that the five days we picked were during the Fiesta de Santa Fe. This made it all the more important that we were staying just a short walk from the Plaza because some roads were closed and parking is near impossible in the center of town.
The Inn of the Governors is just two short blocks from the plaza and within walking distance of most things to see. The benefits are the close location, FREE parking on site, a nice buffet breakfast in the morning including several hot items along with the regular cereals, fruit, pastries etc. included in the price, sherry and tea in the afternoon and most of all the staff is there to HELP you.
Everyone we met was friendly, polite and would always ask what they could do for us. Check-in was easy and fast. They made suggestions and reservations for dinner and offered advice on travel and activities in the area. The rooms were clean and well cared for and you even have a choice as how much cleaning you want them to do (change the bed or just make it) and when to do it. When I booked on-line I found that they also donate a portion of room rate to local charities. The rooms have coffee makers and a mini-refrig.
We will definitely stay again next time we travel that way.
