“Most Romantic Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2008

My boyfriend and I just stayed a couple of days in November 23, and 24th at the Historic Madeleine Inn Bed and Breakfast in Santa Fe, NM which we booked with Regan by calling the Inn directly. She knew exactly what we wanted. It was one of the most charming places I have ever stayed at! The weather was still warm and Santa Fe was still showing beautiful fall colors. Everything was magfiicent - from Annie's organic breakfasts to the couples massage and rose petal bath. Infact my massage from Lowrie was one of the best I've ever experienced. We stayed in the "Forsythia". It was large and and so homey. We even came back early each night to enjoy the "real" fire place. We snuck a peek at some of the other rooms (each one adorable and unique flavor of historic Santa Fe), but decided we would always try to book this one - now our favorite! It was in walking distance from the Plaza and all the museums on Canyon, but we drove to the Santa Fe Farmer's Market Tuesday morning before leaving town. They had everything we needed for take-home giifts. Oh yeah, The Madeleine is doing everything they can to be eco-friendly which we appreciated.

We just got back from a lovely two night stay at The Madeleine!
We took our daugher with us and stayed in the cottage for three and it was so nice. We had a wonderful fireplace we used every evening and morning. The room never smelled of ash. The food was amazing! They always had cookies, brownies or bread in the main room that was available. (Also m & m's, hersey kisses, pretzels, and granola) The breakfast each morning was soooo good!!! The blue corn waffles with strawberry sauce was the best I've ever eaten. They also served cherry cobbler and pineapple cake along with it. They had the best homemade
granola I've ever eaten as well. The afternoon wine and cheeses was very nice. They had different dips and cheeses daily. Another good thing-very close to the square! Will be back for sure. Will try the spa next time.

The Madeleine was just what my husband and I needed. It is the perfect little getaway spot just a few blocks away from the square. You are met by the sweet staff when you get there...alone with fresh baked, out of this world, homemade cookies, then shown to your room. We stayed in the Morning Glory. It was very quiet and romantic. Breakfast was amazing...Blue corn waffles and peach cobbler with fresh fruit plus a visit with other nice couples from all over. We had an appointment at the spa (Nirvana) the next morning for a couple's massage and a rose pedal bath. WOW. It was so fabulous. The staff at the spa and the Madeleine are both so sweet. Sorry, I can't really do it justice with words, but if you need a little getaway with your spouse or significant other......book it. I don't think you will be sorry. The only thing we wished for was more time. We only had 1 night to stay. Next time we will stay longer, no doubt.

We recently spent a weekend at The Madeleine and were very pleased with our stay at this charming Santa Fe bed and breakfast. We needed a place to de-stress, and The Madeleine was just the place to do that. We were greeted warmly upon our arrival and felt quite pampered during our stay there. The weekend hostess, Paige, made us feel “at home” with fresh baked goodies always available. Although we enjoyed a short walk to the downtown plaza area each day, our favorite part of the evening was retreating to the inn early in the evenings to enjoy quiet time in front of the fireplace. Our room, the Geranium, had ivy-covered windows overlooking a quiet street and was very pleasant and restful. The breakfasts were wonderful and included delicious choices that pleased our different tastes. Our weekend at The Madeleine was definitely an enjoyable experience.

I recently returned from a 5-night stay at the Madeleine, while I was visiting Santa Fe for a photography workshop. I truly enjoyed my stay there, with the highlights being:

Kevin's freshly baked cookies every day (really delicious!). The breakfasts were wonderful also, and included waffles with pine nuts and a terrific fritatta with mild chili peppers. The evening wine and cheese was a nice relaxing touch.

The Nirvana Spa was amazing! I indulged in the Lulur Indonesian massage which included a body scrub. Both were done using the most fantastic smelling aromatherapy oils and herbs. It was like no other treatment I have ever had. The finale was a soak in a huge granite bath tub, covered with rose petals! It was fantastic! Even though it was very luxurious, the Inn and Spa are very environmentally conscious, and have their own water recycling system, so no water is wasted. This concern was evident throughout my stay, and was a large reason I chose this Inn.

The Inn is a short walk from the Old Town Plaza, so the location is very convenient. It is also very quiet, since it is on a dead-end street, and across the street from a church. I stayed in the Ivy Room on the top floor and it was very quiet and peaceful. It does have some very steep stairs at the end. They didn't bother me and helped me use some of the calories from the great food. If you have any difficulty walking up steep stairs though, you might consider staying on one of the lower floors.

I really hope to return again soon.

Our favorite B&B in Santa Fe closed in 2005. Having been regular guests for 20 years, we searched long and hard to find a place where coming back year after year would seem like a homecoming to extended family. Incredibly, we have found our new home-away-from-home with Carolyn Burke and the wonderful, longstanding staff at the Madeleine and its sister inn, Hacienda Nicholas, across the street.

The location of the inns is perfect - a quiet dead end street just a five minute walk from the Plaza and Canyon Road - so no need to worry about parking. The Madeleine is a charming Victorian inn and a member of the Green Hotels Association (which we find admirable and really appreciate). Truly wonderful homemade breakfasts with fresh ingredients are served every morning across the street at the Hacienda Nicholas, where there's a lovely patio and interior dining area. Wine and cheese are also served in the afternoon.

Staff members, for the most part, are veterans and everyone has an interesting story. They couldn't be more helpful and reflect the warmth and hospitality of the inns' owner. The biggest "problem" is that the aroma of freshly baked cookies or pastries that are available 24/7 make it impossible to come or go without feeling compelled to sample the latest treats. The diet will have to wait!

A luxurious spa is also situated next to the Madeleine. I was a little reluctant to recommend this find for fear of not being able to get a reservation in the future, but we've booked our rooms for the next two years. In fact, we were just there for nine days and I'm returning for another three days to end my New Mexico trip.

Those who appreciate the charm of quaint B&B's that have some history and character, rather than larger, more impersonal or sterile hotels, will find a delightful respite at the Madeleine.

We highly recommend "The Madeline" in Santa Fe, NM. It is an elegant Victorian Inn. The quiet and safe location is ideal and just a short walk away from the Santa Fe Plaza or the art galleries on Canyon Road. We made our reservation by calling the Inn and speaking with Michael. He helped us select "The Morning Glory" room, booked our reservation and then immediately sent us a confirmation email that contained detailed information about our stay.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by Kevin with a plateful of his freshly baked "Apricot Chip" cookies. Kevin escorted us to our room and gave us a tour of the property including the award winning Absolute Nirvana Spa. He also assisted us in planning our stay in Santa Fe. Our room was quiet and private enough to sleep with the windows wide open. We enjoyed the stained glass window over our comfortable four post king bed and watching the sunlight dance through the tree leaves outside our bay windows.

A delicious breakfast was served across the street in the adobe garden courtyard of The Hacienda Nicholas Inn. The servings were generous and the food was freshly prepared with organic ingredients. In the afternoon, wine and tea was served and we enjoyed relaxing in the courtyard while sharing conversations with other guest and the staff. I loved the combination of staying at The Madeline and dining at The Nicolas Hacienda as I felt we had two unique experiences. We were able to stay in a grand Victorian home plus enjoy the charm of a traditional adobe Inn during the same visit to Santa Fe.

The Madeline and The Nicolas Hacienda are eco-friendly Inns that have the same owner. If the Madeline is booked we would also recommend staying at The Nicholas. Free parking is on site and added to the convenience of our stay. I recommend visiting the web sites for these properties to see photos, read about the history, and for a sampling of delicious recipes:

Thank you Carolyn, Kevin, Anna, Michael, and staff for an excellent stay in Santa Fe. We look forward to our next visit with you and hope this review will encourage other travelers to enjoy your hospitality.
