I have known this restaurant and owner for years and always like the food as I have a home near Spain border with Portugal. I entered the not too busy bar, sat down, the bar tender appeared reluctant to help me and then I had to ask him, "I'd like a glass of dry white wine." He then looked up at the selection and said "What kind, we have many?" I then decided to have a certain glass, which was fair. But that is not the issue. I then looked at the selection of Tapas and he said to me, "I thought you knew all the names of the Tapas." This was the reason why he never gave me a menu. Then the guy began to help a couple who came in and sat down, showing them all the different wines, tapas and giving good explanation. The bartender, then put on his NY Yankee hat and left the restaurant.
Another bartender came over and gave me another glass of wine. I ordered a nice Tapas dish and finished it. I had then been in the Taberna for 1 hour. I asked for a 3rd glass and then ordered dessert. At this time I had been in the restaurant 1 1/2 hours,(plus or minus). Nearing the end of the dessert, I joked with the bartender about the wine and she said she was not giving me another! These are small glasses of wine/ I was walking in downtown Santa Fe/ This was the first and last place I was going to stop in town. In other words, I was "Cut-Off." I was puzzled. It was as if these staffmembers owned the restuaruant them selves and had no manners. I understand about drink/drive or drunk patrons or just people drinking too much! But having a few glasses of wine in a bar like this, with food does not make me a trouble maker.
After I expressed humiliation to the Hostess and receiving a rude comment about "drunkeness" I left and walked home feeling as if I will never return to either restaurant.
My wife was a Concierge and we know James fairly well and were disappointed that his good work can end up like this. I've not been back. Santa Fe has a lot of other restaurants to explore. I wonder if anyone else had this happen to them?
