“Problematic resort”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2012 via mobile

We stayed here for 3 nights. First off they did not have one of our rooms in the system (via expedia) so we had to sleep in a different building than our 2 sons. They promised a direct path but it was a steep ice covered path. Our sons room was very old (piñon lodge) and smelled like smoke. Our room was nicer (lamy lodge) but the fence had fallen over. Every day one or another key failed to work as they were programmed incorrectly. No views from rooms. Showers were terrible. Hot tub was not worth going in. Health club was mediocre at best.

We stay there for 3 days visiting the area. It is a great location near santa fe, Taos and Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument. Nice bedroom with fire place. Just ask the reception for wood delivery at your door. The restaurant is good and the resort has a real bar with great choice of cocktails. we appreciated the ranch and we had a very pleasant horse back riding. We recommend this resort 100%.

Actually enjoyed two nights stay at Bishop's Lodge with a gratis upgrade and with no thanks to the very sadly unattentive front desk staff and seemingly total lack of maintainence staff. The room cleaning did a great job of very fancy towel folding, fire place cleaning and bed making but over looked malfunctioning lamps (despite noteS to say it DIDN"T work) fire wood, vacuming, water etc. One classic example was when we asked the young lad at the front desk if the lodge restaurant would be serving breakfast to guests on Thanksgiving morning, -" Oh I don't know they'll be getting ready for Brunch." (PERIOD); no, "Just let me check.". Great place but we won't be back!

Room Tip: Get one with a fireplace BUT ensure that they will supply suffient wood, daily!

We spent our anniversary at Bishop's Lodge and have a wonderful time. The entire atmosphere is lovely and the the staff keen on making our stay special. Our room with its warm fireplace, beautiful views and comfortable bed was hard to leave. We ate at the Lodge restaurant, the service was top notch and the food outstanding. The coyotes howling at night was a real treat. I also visited the Lodge's spa and had their body polishing treatment. I've done this type of treatment at dozens of spas in the US and Europe and this experience is in my top 5. The vichy shower was fabulous (7 shower heads spray warm water as you lay on a massage table being scrubbed with some wonderful sponge (?) and aromatic soaps). I only wish they would have sold me one of those sponges or whatever it was. You got to experience it.

Room Tip: We stayed in one of the upper suites in the Vista del Valle building.

My wife and I just had a mini-vacation there. We were on the go almost every day, and used the lodge as a 'home-base', meaning we did not take advantage of everything that Bishops offered. Having said that, I really liked the rustic feel and character of the place, because it brings a certain charm, but the place isn't cheap, so some things are inexcusable. For example, if I ask for a wake -up call so that I can catch my early morning flight, I really expect that I will get a call. I didn't. When confronted with this large oversight, the front desk clerk just shrugged his shoulders. That's pretty bad. Another example, we paid for a room with a wood burning fireplace (kiva) which was truly excellent (+), but why would we have to ask to have the firewood replenished by our front door? This became an annoying daily ritual, that didn't need to be. (-). Maid service was generally ok...although we still laugh at the fact that our complimentary bag of nachos went missing one day...(maid got hungry?). We didn't get a bottle of water that day either, so we figured she needed something to wash the nachos down with. For those that choose to dine there - we sat at the bar one night and ordered a dessert. It was the sorriest-looking excuse for an apple tart that I had ever seen or tasted. You can get better from the frozen food aisle in your local grocery store - really. But on the flip-side, we really appreciated the complimentary chocolate-covered strawberries in our room (wife b-day) - nice touch. Our room was a little dated, and smelled a little like skunk weed, but it didn't bother me at all (i kinda liked it actually - heh).

So, am I picky? Not really. I travel a lot for business and really liked that this was just not some cookie-cutter, sterile hotel room. I liked the feel of the property, and the spa was fantastic. I'd sum it up by saying that certain things need improvement, but you can still enjoy the property. Folks from Bishops Lodge - if you are listening, you're falling short but not by much! Step it up!

We upgraded our room to stay in a deluxe suite because we have a toddler. Everyone sleeps much better if we sleep separately. The living space was spacious and comfortable. However, we did have numerous issues. First, when we arrived, our original room layout was not what we requested. The front desk found another suite that met our requirements, but we did have to wait over an hour. While the upgraded room was nice, the toilet did not work and in fact flooded the bathroom (very gross)! The heat was not working properly and the radiator that was brought to us didn't stand upright. A minor issue was the drops of condensation that would periodically drip from the windows in the ceiling. On the last night, our room keys didn't work. The front desk failed to fix the problem, so we would have had to drive back to the front desk had we not bumped into a worker who let us into our room. While the issues were significant, the staff handled the problems promptly and were very nice. They agreed to eliminate the charge for the upgraded room because of our trials and tribulations. Once the kinks were worked out, we had a nice stay. Because there were some aspects that were great but some aspects that were not so great, I would have to rate the place neutrally.

Stayed there recently, and all I have to say is the only thing this place can "boast" about are their run-down, dirty and overpriced rooms. The entire property needs work.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
In August of 1851, a Frenchman, Jean Baptiste Lamy, arrived in the NM Territory as the first Bishop of Santa Fe. Here he built a private retreat; his chapel still stands today, now on the national register of historic places. After Lamy's Death, the land was acquired by the Pulitzer publishing family as a private vacation retreat. In 1917, the Thorpe family from Denver fell in love with these pristine acres, bought the property and developed the first resort in the state. Today Bishop's Lodge comprises 15 lodges for a total of 110 rooms ranging in sizes from 250 sq feet to 450, not to mention a 2000 sq foot Presidential Suite. Many of our rooms feature fireplaces and the majority all have outdoor access to patios, lawns or balconies. Our ShaNah Spa and Wellness Center which opened up in June of 2002 is a sanctuary where one can take time out to be nurtured by Mother Nature, guided by ancient wisdon and touched by angels. The experience may change your life. Other activities are abundant such as: trap/skeet shooting (offered to groups of 10 or monmre roomnights), horseback, pony trail rides, hiking, mountain biking, fitness center, excercise studio, outdoor pool, whirlpool and tennis to mention a few. Bishop's Lodge is located just 3 miles from the Historic Santa Fe Plaza. Complimentary shuttle service is provided by the lodge at scheduled times daily. ... more   less
