Ate there yesterday for the second time and it was just a fabulous as the first. This is real homemade food, not Taco Bell, and it was amazingly delicious. Our server was friendly, pleasant, knowledgeable and exceedingly helpful. This was just an all-around good time.
Nothing at all pretentious about Atrisco. It's in a little shopping mall northwest of the Plaza and doesn't look like much. The atmosphere is ok, but not elegant or anything. But the food is amazing. A lot of care has gone into this family-owned restaurant, and it shows.
We first ate there in 2011, on the recommendation of a volunteer tour guide at the Mission of San Miguel. Pays to get a local opinion. He told us to get the carne adovada burrito smothered in red chile. Normally, I'm a green chile fan, but we decided to try it his way, with lots of sour cream on top. It was one of the most fantastic food experiences of my life. Until we got to the dessert. Also at his suggestion, we topped one of the mandatory sopapillas with the red chile, sour cream, and honey. An astoundingly enjoyable experience.
Our server was a gem. She made personal contact, gave expert advice on menu suggestions, obviously informed by lots of prior experience, and got the kitchen to do something special for my wife.
If you are ever in the Santa Fe area, you must try Atrisco. Best red chile in the universe!
