“Nowhere but the Saddle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2011

This is our third stay at the Silver Saddle (Feb 17-20). Overall, we experienced the same excellent service consistent with our two other previous stays. You’ll find this “budget” motel to be uncommonly rare, and packed with values. My impression is that Dawn, Miguel, Ted and owner Penny’s idea of hospitality is akin to treating guests more as clients, especially for those actively seeking assistance or advice about sightseeing, dining, and shopping. Their knowledge, extra touches to comfort, and genuine interest for helping you get the most out of your stay is indeed rare.
Since at least summer 2009, the Saddle has continued its various room upgrades, the latest being upgrading to wide screen TVs. Overall, rooms are bright and very comfortable. In the past, Dawn has given us naproxene for headaches, great tips on affordable New Mexican-style dining (Maria’s, Pantry, The Shed), along with affordable shopping tips, hiking & biking trail guides (Dale Ball trails) and tips on many points of interest too numerous to mention. There’s a very handy reference library in the main office containing all kinds of outdoor guides, books, maps and magazines focusing on Santa Fe and other destination locations in New Mexico. It’s a great source for trip ideas. Shopping for southwestern-style décor is as quick as a walk across the parking lot to Jacalope, a good starting place for gift shopping.
For the thrifty, bus route 2 offers stops right at the motel, where a 20 minute bus ride takes you to downtown central, within a ten minute walking distance to everything--the plaza, governor’s palace and government offices, art galleries, restaurants, shops and more. Bring your questions or trip ideas over to the main office during the freebee continental breakfast (7:30-10A) and take advantage of their tips and assistance.

Just got home from our one night spent in Santa Fe, one adult and 3 kids. After a busy day in Santa Fe, it was nice to be able to park right in front of our room and unload everything. The room was a bit small for 4, especially the bathrooms, but upon first opening the door, we appreciated that it smelled and appeared very clean. The pet fee was only $10 a night, much more reasonable than most places in Santa Fe. The sheets were clean and very soft, and the beds were firm, but comfortable. I brought extra pillows because I'm a pillow hog and I was very cozy. I liked the window in the bathroom that could be opened to keep fresh air in there, especially after showers. There are bars on the windows which gives a sense of safety and the view was a large grassy fenced in empty lot. But the bathroom could have used a plunger under the sink because the toilet was unable to keep up with demand. ahem.
My youngest child watched some children's programming on TV, while my teenagers and I did our thing on our laptops. IT was great to have Wi-Fi, except my teens had issues with being disconnected from their gaming sites, while I had no problems, except maybe a little slowness. Being next to Jackalope was kind of neat, although in the winter they don't open until after 10am, and we were already in downtown Santa Fe be then, so it really didn't benefit us.
Breakfast was adequate, although it would have been nice if they had orange juice, because trying to eat bagels, croissants and oatmeal with only coffee to drink was rather difficult.
The price was right though, the staff were friendly, the character of the Silver Saddle, including the themed rooms, was fun and unique and we would definetely come back again.

My family of four stayed at the motel and it was a positive experience. It is a retro gem amidst big box store land. The room was large with a great shower. There was a table to check email on the laptop. It was a little rustic for our pampered teens but the value for us was worth it. Nice kind owners who owned it previously for 25 years and got it back a year ago after seven years of a prior owner. I expect improvements and upcoming better maintenance from these diligent folks. We will look forward to returning to the Silver Saddle.

Family run place - great departure from chain motels. We met interesting people at breakfast, enjoyed the comforts of the room and hospitality of staff. A true 1950's Wild West Motel! (And right next door to Jackalope....an eclectic shopping experience!)

I was looking for a basic hotel that was safe, clean, and comfy. i looked on trip advisor like i always do when i am trying a new hotel. And saw this place had good reviews. And everyone was right. My check in was very quick and staff was very friendly.

I had a room that i could drive up to which i liked. I had a refridge and microwave in my room. the bed was very comfortable and nice clean, thick, high tread count sheets and pillow cases.
I have no complaints and the price was right. $52.00 with tax.

What a great little find. This is not the Hilton, but it is convenient, clean, friendly and quintessentially funky! Loved the owners too, they couldn't be more helpful..

....so I know not to expect new furnishings or fancy amenities found at newer motels.

That said, and while it was obvious the owners have made an effort to use shabby-chic to their advantage, chic is missing.

And the room smelled bad (not from smoking; not sure what it was -- old carpet? -- but it was unpleasant.)

Also, the room was poorly lit which probably added to its drab appearance. There was a weak overhead bulb and two bedside lamps, one of which had to be unplugged so I could use my laptop (all the electric outlets in the room are being used; there are none in the bathroom).

On the plus side, (in the dim light) the room appeared to be clean, and the bed was comfortable. Friendly owners, too.
