“Would definitely stay again...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2014

Stayed here right before Christmas and it was wonderful in every way. Fabulous location and a wonderful breakfast with tons of options...healthy and less so....but the best part was the 5pm social hour. You get to mingle with the other guests over a glass of wine and snacks. Super fun with wonderful conversations with folks from all over. No doubt, I would stay again !!!

Room Tip: I was in Sage and while small, it was just right.

Christmas is a beautiful time in Santa Fe, and visitors can enjoy the farolito lined buildings and Plaza lights from Thanksgiving through New Year's Day. It is good to know the breakfast offerings worked well for you - we do try to have a wide variety of foods and to accommodate specific dietary needs as well - and that you particularly enjoyed the Wine & Cheese Hour. We were thrilled to get the first B&B Wine Permits in the state, and love hosting this nightly gathering. We shall look forward to your next visit, and wish you a wonderful 2014.

Recently we returned from a week-long trip to New Mexico – specifically to Santa Fe and Albuquerque. We stayed at three B&B’s total; with our first stay in Santa Fe (as that was where we arrived via plane) and then a few nights in Albuquerque. Our trip ended with a stay at the Hacienda Nicholas B&B.

Having had a positive experience from our first B&B stay in Santa Fe a few days beforehand, we had cautious but somewhat high expectations of H.N. Upon our afternoon arrival for check-in, we found the front door was locked at Hacienda Nicholas. Calling the number for Hacienda Nicholas, I spoke with the office manager (?) about checking in and she asked if I had received an email with check-in instructions. I checked my phone and sure enough, there was an email sent the day of check-in. While I am not finding fault for the timing of the communication, it would have been nice to have received instructions a day or so before arrival – so as to prevent any panic (I admit that I panicked a bit) and allow for guests to be a bit better prepared. We ended up picking up our check-in info and room key from their other B&B location and after a mis-billing incident, we self-checked in and got ourselves settled at Hacienda Nicholas. I am not sure if we were a one-off incident but I just wanted to be truthful about our B&B experience.

Thankfully, the rest of our stay at Hacienda Nicholas erased any doubts that creeped in from our check-in/billing incident. We booked the Sunflower suite, which is a private and cozy space, away from the main house but one can easily access the main house via a lovely interior courtyard. The hacienda is a traditional Santa Fe lodging and has a unique story to it. The interior is simply but tastefully adorned. Our suite was well furnished with a nice fireplace. Our suite was really comfortable and there was just something really peaceful about sitting in our room with the fireplace going. The lodging is an older building and as such, has decent amenities – which fits with the feel of the place. If one is expecting hi-tech, modern sinks and showers – this won’t be the place that will have that.

Carolyn Lee and her staff are gracious and wonderful hosts. We met Carolyn and some of her staff at breakfast time and we were made to feel really welcomed at Hacienda Nicholas. Carolyn is extremely knowledgeable about the ins and outs of Santa Fe, as she is a long time resident of Santa Fe and can give wonderful recommendations about eateries and things to do in Santa Fe. Breakfast was a delicious affair on the two mornings that we were there. It was Blue Corn Waffles the first morning and Roasted Poblano Chiles with Quinoa & Chipotle Cream Sauce the next – decadently delicious! Also available were fresh fruit cups, yogurts, cereals and granola. One definitely will not starve for breakfast at Hacienda Nicholas. Breakfast is served in a lovely and tastefully furnished common room. A nice fire was going in the great fireplace – which was a nice welcome for the morning. Dining style is family style but there are enough spaces at the two tables that allow one for private dining (if one chooses).

Hacienda Nicholas B&B is super convenient as it is only a few blocks away from the Plaza. One of the things that we most enjoyed about our stay at Hacienda Nicholas was that we were able to comfortably walk to the Plaza and restaurants (about 3 blocks down on Marcy street). The neighborhood felt safe, even at night time. Being able to walk into town gives Santa Fe visitors a different perspective than if one had to drive to different places all the time. It was nice to have that alternate perspective.

Overall, we had a wonderful time at Hacienda Nicholas and will definitely go back again. We would recommend Hacienda Nicholas to anyone wanting to experience traditional Santa Fe lodging that is in town and for the hospitality and service that they provide. Some other noteworthy positives about Hacienda Nicholas that makes them stand out are that they make conscious efforts to recycle and be environmentally friendly, as well as being thoughtful about their healthy breakfasts.

Goodness me, what a lovely review you have written of your stay at Hacienda Nicholas! It is gratifying to know how much you appreciated everything about your stay, from the Southwestern decor to the service, the regionally-inspired breakfasts to the convenient downtown location.

I feel badly that there was confusion regarding your check-in. We do our best to ensure that guests are informed of our check-in procedure at the time of booking, both verbally and in writing. An email confirmation is sent out once the reservation is made, outlining the check-in at The Madeleine (just across the street) and the necessary driving directions. All arrivals prior to 5pm are checked in by the Madeleine Innkeeper, and the Hacienda NIcholas innkeeper is around from 4:30-6:30/7pm to assist guests and to host the Wine & Cheese Hour.

I certainly understand how it is when one is booking a trip - there are so many emails and details to track: airline reservations, car reservations, multiple lodging confirmations, etc. I regret that our initial email to you, outlining the check-in procedure, got lost in the shuffle.

Because there have been a few others over the years who have also gone first to the Hacienda Nicholas for check in, we will now be sending a second email with a subject line of "Check-In Instructions for the Inn" which will follow the "Confirmation for the Inn" email. I am sure it will help clarify the check-in procedure. Thank you for letting us know of the situation so we could make some changes in our procedures, as well as make the necessary billing adjustment.

I am delighted that you had such a wonderful time at Hacienda Nicholas, and that we were able to make up for the initial confusion. Have a wonderful 2014!

The Hacienda Nicholas comprises several buildings, including the "Alexander's Inn" cottages, located a few blocks away. We stayed in one of the latter, a self-contained unit with living room, kitchen, bathroom, and loft bedroom. It was very charming, though the narrow spiral stair giving access to the loft required some care to negotiate and would not be easy of access for people who are not reasonably slender. We were informed when booking that people over six feet tall had slept comfortably in the loft, but it was easy for people well under six feet to bump their heads on the low beams. And anyone requiring access to the bathroom during the night necessarily had to use the spiral stair. The kitchen was pretty well equipped, making housekeeping quite possible for those wishing to prepare their own food and drink. However, a good breakfast is offered daily in the Hacienda Nicholas building. The proprietor of the inn is a very friendly and helpful lady who goes out of her way to help guests with any difficulty that might arise. At the time of our visit, however, she had an irrepressible and playful six-month old dog that, despite her usually being swift to call him off, was more than once all over us when we tried to enter or leave our cottage. As we're unecstatic about dogs, this was a bit of a nuisance. On the other hand, dog lovers would probably find this an attractive feature.
Alexander's Inn is a little way up a dirt road with a significant layer of frozen snow and ice that didn't melt throughout our four-day stay, although the snow on the nearby road swiftly disappeared. Overall, a very pleasant stay in a charming and well-equipped accommodation.

Thank you very much for writing such a thorough and comprehensive review of your stay in The Cottage, one of our off-site vacation rentals. It offers a desirable blend of B&B with Vacation Rental - I am happy to know you found it a pleasant and well-equipped little house.

As for the spiral stairs, while they are more narrow than traditional stairs, there have been no problems whatsoever with their dimensions in the 24 years we have been renting out The Cottage. Clearly this house is not suitable for guests with any mobility issues, and we go to great lengths to ensure that we do not rent the house out to anyone who would have a difficult time with spiral stairs.

I apologize for the nuisance of our now seven-month old yellow lab, who did greet you with great enthusiasm on a couple of occasions during your stay. While he is rarely in the yard on his own (our most recent Cottage guests expressed their disappointment that they only saw Brady once during their 4 days), I too advise that if a guest does not want to risk any interaction with a dog, let alone a puppy, they would be better off in one of the other three vacation rentals. We will be sure to make all potential guests aware of his presence. As you point out, some guests are absolutely thrilled to meet Brady, though this is inevitably not a universal feeling.

Regarding the lane behind the Cottage, as we had bone chilling cold temperatures during your stay, and as the road does not get a lot of sun, it tends to hold the snow and ice. We do clear all snow from the paths and parking lots so there is no snow or ice to worry about on the property, but some of the shady streets and walkways of Santa Fe do remain snowy/icy long after the sunny streets are clear.

I appreciate that you wrote such a comprehensive review of your experience so that others may be well-informed when booking their own rooms or casitas. It is good to know that you enjoyed your stay, despite the qualifications mentioned. We shall hope to enjoy your company again in the future, though perhaps you would be even happier in one of our other accommodations.

We had a great long weekend getaway at the Hacienda Nicholas. From the welcoming staff, to the yummy food, to the beautiful room and large bathroom we truly felt at home. The location is perfect! So close to the Plaza and to Canyon Road, we walked for most of our trip!

We will definitely return. Thanks to all the staff for being so helpful and offering suggestions!

Room Tip: Sunflower room was quite spacious!

Thank you very much for writing of your pleasant experience in The Sunflower Room of Hacienda Nicholas - I too love the spaciousness, kiva fireplace and viga beams, along with the quiet and private nature of the room. We are all delighted to know you enjoyed the warmth and assistance you received, as well as the breakfasts and our convenient location. Many guests find they don't need their cars at all while staying at the Hacienda, which is a nice change from daily life. Thank you again.

Cold and snowy outside and warm and welcoming in. We have stayed in various hotels and B&B's in Santa Fe. This is our favorite. We don't stay in the main building; we stay in one of the rooms across the courtyard. It is very private and roomy with a small sitting room next to the bedroom. Location is perfect, close to the Plaza, shopping and restaurants. The staff is friendly and helpful, other guests pleasant and breakfast very good. Highly recommend.

There are a good many wonderful hotels and B&B's in Santa Fe, so it is especially wonderful to read that we are now your favorite. Those private courtyard suites are ideal for guests who love the ambiance of the B&B but also want more privacy. Thank you for writing, and thank you for your most favorable comments on the location, staff and breakfast. We look forward to enjoying your company once again in the not-too-distant future.

We stayed at the Hacienda Nicholas in the Wisteria Room for the first leg of our journey to Prescott, AZ George took our reservation and he was pleasant and informative. Serge is the Innkeeper and chef for the breakfast. Each day the breakfast was wonderful and had the flavor of Santa Fe, NM. Serge was also helpful in answering all of our questions.
The Wisteria Room is nice with 2 chairs and a very comfortable bed. It is a narrow room, so if you want a little more space consider one of the other rooms. We had our Golden Retriever with us and his kennel. He takes up some space!! The lobby area is comfortable and cozy for reading or talking with other guests. While there we booked our return trip through Santa Fe for the Cottonwood Room.

It is so heart-warming to read of your enjoyment of Hacienda Nicholas, and that you had such positive interactions with George and Serge. They are both terrific people and stellar employees, with vast knowledge of Santa Fe. Both are terrific chefs as well - so glad you enjoyed the southwestern flair of our breakfasts. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you at breakfast this morning on your return trip from Prescott, and hope you made it home safe and sound through the morning snow.

We rented Casa Pinon for the Thanksgiving weekend and just fell in love with it! It is a delightful little house and very well appointed--we were able to make the turkey and all the fixings in the sweet little kitchen. The main rooms are so comfortable, the beds are simply WONDERFUL and the location was fabulous. We checked in late very at night and had no problems--due entirely to the great instructions sent to us via email, text and followed-up by phone call. Carolyn, one of the innkeepers, was so nice--coming out to help us with a very minor internet problem on THANKSGIVING! (Turned out it was our problem, not theirs). I cannot recommend Casa Pinon enough--we LOVED it! In fact, we loved it so much, we're already planning a trip back in the late Spring with visions of enjoying the outdoor deck while watching the beautiful sunsets over the mountains with a nice glass of wine! Mmm...missing Casa Pinion already!

Green Features: They’ve opted to forgo the little bottles & soap bars. Must admit I thought it was cheesy at first. BUT, once I pumped that oh-so-luscious shampoo into my hand, I knew they made the right choice. From a local place w/natural ingredients. I LOVED it--couldn't stop using the lotion!

How wonderful that you enjoyed your Thanksgiving weekend at the Casa Pinon. Having lived there with my family for many years, I have very fond memories of the house, and look forward to living there again one day. It is good to know that the kitchen had all you needed to make your Thanksgiving feast, and that you so enjoyed the house and location. I am glad that the internet problem was such a simple matter so everyone could enjoy their Thanksgiving. We look forward to your return visit when you will be able to enjoy the outdoors and the wonderful sunset views from Casa Pinon.
