“Not One of My Favorites”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

My family makes it a point to visit the capitol building of each state we visit when we travel assuming the path works out. We do not as a general rule take the tours of the inside of these buildings but instead choose to walk the grounds, admire the architecture, history and sculptures when available. Understanding that the adobe style is the norm for the area, I still expected to see the capitol building with more of an architectural style similar to the traditional capitol buildings. This one did not have any of the same elements which definitely makes it unique but it is one that I am simply not a fan.

“Only circular capitol in the country”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013

This is a truly unique building for those used to the typical domed capitol building. The circular rotunda with the state seal is definitely different.

“Beautiful building with a beautiful art exhibit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

We finally found this building but had trouble finding parking. We ended up in the 30 minute parking at the Visitors Center and took our chance. When we went in May 2013 they had a Art Exhibit of pictures that were quilted - absolutely outstanding. The building itself is beautiful with a lovely ceiling too. A must see for any trip to Santa Fe.

“Art and Politics”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

The Capitol Building is termed the Roundhouse in Santa Fe due to the architectural design. Hallways run into a grand circle that overlooks the main floor. Every hallway features gorgeous art of differing periods, artists, styles and regions. If you're into politics, help yourself to a legislative committeee hearing in January-February or wander into the House or Senate Gallery to observe. Non-politicos will enjoy the art, sunlight and beautifully designed building.

“The Roundhouse - amazing art collection.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2012

We booked our free tour the day before by calling 505-986-4589. We parked not far away in a lot that was free - 420 Galispeo. We were told about this lot when we booked the tour. Our party of 4 had our own guide, a young woman who did an excellent job. We actually could walk right in - no taking off your shoes or belt. No scanners. Very inviting. The capitol building is not what you expect. In fact we drove by it a couple of times, because we did not see it, the day before. The design is an adaptation of Greek revival and Pueblo adobe architecture. The building forms the Zia sun symbol the circle of life. . New Mexico claims the oldest capitol and the one of the newest. What a treat it was to see something different! We learned that there are 70 house members that don't get a salary. They just get a per diem for 30 days one year and 60 the next year. When they come to work they get stuff done! Great idea for Washington.

The 1st capitol was built in 1610 - the Palace of Governor. New Mexico was a territory for 64 years. The Sky light in the rotunda - represents an Indian basket weave. The permanent art collection throughout the capitol is outstanding. It comes from 650 artists, all from New Mexico. One artist, Pablita Velarde did one that she collected earth from all over New Mexico to make her paint. It was stunning! No tax payer money is used to purchase the art. The art not only includes paintings, but also handcrafted furniture, sculptures and more. We really enjoyed the Governor's Gallery on the 4th floor. Near the Governor Gallery is a large painting by Gary Morton. Gary is a cowboy that worked at different ranches. He paints to honor the working cowboy and boy it sure shows. The detail is amazing. Another one was a sculpture of a bison made entirely out of recycled materials. That was fun to see!

We are so glad we took time to have our personal tour and learn so much about Santa Fe and New Mexico. We try to visit as many state capitols as possible when we travel and we always do the guided tours.
