“This hotel has potential...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2013

My husband and I just returned from a week's stay. We knew ahead of time that the rooms would be small and minimalistic, just by reading the reviews. First, the pros - the cleaning staff were very accomodating, brought us up an iron and coffee maker almost immediately. The front desk was also very friendly. And now the cons: The linens and towels were more the color of gray than white, and some of the towels were starting to fray around the edges. One of the lights over the bed could only be turned off by unscrewing the light bulb with a face towel. However, the biggest complaints are about the bar service and outside area. On our first night (Saturday), we stood at the bar for over 5 minutes, and there were three bartenders. One of the male bartenders was too busy making free shots for someone sitting at the bar, then he joined some girls at a table on the other side. We were virtually ignored by the other bartender, so left and went somewhere else. The next night, the female bartender was more interested in eating candy and appeared to be inconvenienced in making a drink. Chris Milligan was the redeeming factor, however. The outside area is in desperate need of new cushions and solid cleaning. Quite gross. The other area hotels within walking distance offered so much more, from free newspapers, apples and coffee in their lobby. So sorry, will not be returning!

It is sad to say, but I must agree with all of the previous reviews regarding the housekeeping. I wasn't sure if I should get a tetanus shot after the awful bathroom experience.

The rooms are small, just like other travellers observed. The toilet is behind the door and only enough room to squat. The toilet is an obvious repetitive oversight of housekeeping. I happened to drop something in the shower and as I retrieved the item, I noticed a simply disgusting sight. The toilet's bowl looked like it had not been cleaned since its installation! The towels and linen were dingy and looked like they had been washed with dark clothing. (Management should strongly consider another laundry service.)

Now, if you can get past that, customer service was great. And, you cannot beat the location... most everything is within walking distance. The common areas were also great. The hotel did a great job capturing the history of the hotel in the corridors and lobby.

The rooms are small but quaint and well appointed. The cable/satellite works well and there are many channels to choose.

The hotel is more like a 3.5 star hotel. Finally, the clerk at the rental car counter told me the hotel is rumored to be haunted. I guess that explains the haze that was in the room.

Checked in last week for a spontaneous one-night stay, and was so pleased. The front desk staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and even gave me a reduced rate for such a short stay. The hotel location was perfect - very central to all of the historic district. Gorgeous renovated lobby area with plenty of comfy seating around the fireplace. Room was clean and simple but elegant at the same time - and very quiet. Loved the front porch bar area and the adjacent bar - so relaxing. I dined at the restaurant connected to the hotel and enjoyed a wonderful dinner on their beautiful patio. Excellent staff as well. Can't think of one thing I didn't love. This will be my go-to hotel in Santa Fe!

Room Tip: Room 214 was perfect for one person...might be a tad small for two. But if you're there to sigh...

This hotel was amazing. The staff are very helpful. My companion took the walking tour and was extremely impressed. The restaraunt downstairs was lovely, service was excellent. Lauren at the front desk went above and beyond extending our check out time without problem when we had an event conflict. The greatest benefit was the location. So close to the plaza, shops and restaraunt a and museums. The rooms are a little small for sure but we appreciated the charm and character. Overall excellent value. Try to book their buy 2 get 3rd night free rates!

The Hotel St. Francis is a classic old hotel that was originally
called the Vargas Hotel.  It is in a great location near the
square of Santa Fe.  It is very well maintained and one can
enjoy a drink (the bar makes good ones) on the porch in front
of the hotel.  Our room was very comfortable and quiet.  The
well experienced Concierge gave me some wonderful information
that helped our stay. The service was excellent and I would
recommend a stay there.

Santa Fe is a really great small Southwest Town. If you want a big city hotel you are better off in a big city. The rooms are small and the restrooms even smaller. Our RR had one light bulb. We like fresh air and Santa Fe cools off at night so we opened our window for the breeze. All was well until the bar next door started dumping their beer bottles, seemingly one at a time, followed by the garbage truck and the delivery trucks. Not the hotel's fault I realize. I closed the window and started the AC and everything was better.
They keep it nice and clean and the staff can direct you to the best places to eat. From their location you can walk everywhere.

Room Tip: I'll go back but ask for a quiet room next time.

Hello Jon K and thank you for reviewing our historic hotel. We appreciate your feedback and take each review we get as an opportunity to improve our guest experience. Our historic property has an unbeatable location in our "city different" and we are glad to hear you took advantage of the downtown setting. Since we are on the Historic Register our rooms could not be expanded during the remodel; however, we do have deluxe guestrooms which are more spacious. We also offer complimentary amenities such as extra lamps upon request. Thank you for choosing the Hotel St Francis! Our friendly staff looks forward to welcoming you back next time you are in the area. Alder Seaman

Lovely well-located hotel with a wonderful restaurant and and bar. We appreciated the minimalistic decor and helpful Concierge. The biggest problem was the cleanliness or lack thereof. Room Housekeeping was pretty minimal and careless (one day they left me with absolutely no towels, the next, a filthy rag was left in my bathroom). After telling the Front Desk, I got a lethargic shoulder shrug. The outdoor bar area, which could be one of the best in the city, was never cleaned and downright filthy-- truly revolting. The patio floor was never cleaned the entire week that we were there and the furniture cushions were stained all over. Apparently they offer a 15% discount if you have drinks from the bar, but when I checked out I noticed it was never applied--another shoulder shrug and a promise to "look into it". If they could just get a few of these basic "hotel 101" issues fixed, I would be happy to stay here on a future visit!

Hello Karen M and thank you for taking the time to post a review about your stay at our historic Hotel St Francis. We are so happy to hear you loved our location and the "feel" of the hotel. It is good to hear that you met Inger, our amazing Clef d'Or Concierge and that you enjoyed the food and drinks. Your comments are extremely valuable to us. We take your review as an opportunity to keep training our staff in each department and we apologize if we did not meet your needs during your stay. Your comments have been thoroughly discussed at our weekly staff meeting; it turns out that the 15% discount cannot be applied to alcohol, only food. We are proud of our deluxe historic accommodations and we truly hope to welcome you back to stay again the next time you are here in our "city different". Alder Seaman
