“Quaint minimalistic rooms but great location to walk in Santa Fe.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013

Great location in Santa Fe for walking to everything. Beautifully refurbished in their minimalist theme fashion, but rooms missing some basics for this reason---like ice buckett, wet bar, coffee maker, newspaper, etc. Quaint, but it grows on you.

We live in Santa Fe and have not stayed at the Hotel St. Francis, but we went to their restaurant, the Tabla de los Santos, for dinner the other night and were pleasantly surprised. Dinner, though a bit pricey, was really delicious. The chocolate cake with the warm chocolate syrup inside was absolutely amazing--and rich enough that we shared it, which was just fine, especially after the large portion of rich and tender beef short ribs over a bed of horseradish mashed potatoes with grilled asparagus on top. Service was VERY attentive. The dining room is a bit plain—sophisticated, but it could use some color or art work on the walls. The atmosphere was quiet--though not boring--the window table had a pleasant view of strolling couples, tourists and locals walking to and from the Plaza, which is just one block away. It was a bit chilly to sit outside that night, but as we left, we noticed a pleasant-looking patio.

Room Tip: We live in Santa Fe and only visited the restaurant; we didn't stay in the hotel.

Located just a block or so off the Old Town Square (the end of the Sante Fe Trail), this hotel reeks of times past...and in a good way. The hotel (the first in Sante Fe and on the Historical Buildings Register) has been renovated and, as a result, the rooms can seem a bit "quirky" to some. We found it charming. The bedding is very nice although we can't say much about the view as our room had a wall literally 2 feet from the open window. This did make the room quiet, though, as there was no noise from the busy streets surrounding the hotel. Give and take, right? I have to admit that there was a rather large repair mark in the ceiling right above our bed which, I think, certainly could have been done without being so obvious. Not great to go to sleep nor wake up to. The lobby area and front "patio' were a delight!

Ideal location, very attractive and historic hotel. But room had several drawbacks- poor ventilation system, sagging mattress, not enough outlets ( had to unplug something to charge phone). Service very friendly except for server in Secreto lounge. Beautiful outdoor patio with very good and reasonable breakfasts. Overall tho didn't seem worth the money

Although I've been visiting Santa Fe for years, this is the first time I've stayed at the beautiful Hotel St. Francis. It was so convenient and such a nice experience, it will not be the last time. I really can't say enough about the staff, especially Jeremy. They were on top of their game and what customer service is all about. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

The review title is not my words, but those of the hotel's interior designer (decorator), who gave it that look, as included on her business flyer available in the lobby. I'd say she nailed it. I've given five stars, but this is an unusual hotel, and not for everyone. We stayed six nights. At first, I wondered what we'd gotten into - bare wood floors and no art in the rooms. Religous art and historical photos in the common areas. But, after we got its style figured out, we thought it was just fine. Spartan and austre would be other apt words for this historic property.

We had a "delux 2 double" room on the third (top) floor, front middle. It wasn't large, but large enough for us. In addition to the two double beds, the room included one sitting chair, a night stand between the beds, and a cabinet with the TV, a small fridge, and drawers for clothes. There was also a small clothes closet. Typical of most hotels, the room lighting was not very good.

The hotel offers different package deals, although the man who took our reservation over the phone was reluctant to go through all the deals to see which one would be best for us. He said it was a lot of trouble because he'd have to re-enter our information to check each deal. We took two nights paid and a third night free, twice. We paid $289/night for two nights, and $279/night for two nights. That totals $1136 for six nights, or $189.33 per night. We paid an additional $172.52 in local sales and occupancy taxes. So grand total per night was about $218. Parking, if you have a car, either in the hotel's lot next door, or the municipal lot across the street (which you get a voucher for from the hotel) is an additional $11 per day.

The staff were all very nice and helpful as needed. The restaurant, Tabla de Los Santos, provided great breakfasts at a reasonable price (I've reviewed it separately for the one dinner we ate there). The hotel has a nice, quiet bar (no TVs) and a nice front patio to sit on and watch the people go by. The room air conditioning was easy to control and efficient. The bath fixtures worked well. The beds were a tad soft for us, but everyone has his own taste in firmness. Everything was very clean. Location is also excellent, in the heart of the old downtown area. (They also allow pets, dogs at least. There we plenty of all sizes staying there. St. Francis himself would approve.)

In conclusion - five stars from me, but maybe one from you. It depends on your expectations, and as I said above, this is not a typical hotel of the early 21st century.

Thank you for choosing Hotel St. Francis and taking the time to share your experience with us. We are glad that you enjoyed our historic building and central location. Our interior designer wanted a simplistic monastery ambiance and we are happy to hear that she achieved that goal. To make up for our room simplicity we do offer amenities upon request. This was the third time my sister and I stayed in the beautiful Hotel St. Francis. We were shocked to discover that the rooms no longer feature an in-room coffeemaker.

I understand that the rooms typically don't have many horizontal surfaces on which to set a coffeemaker & cups, but this wasn't much of an issue for us — simply not a big deal.

The first night, we were given a room-service type card to order "coffee service" for the following morning — at $5+ service fee + tax + tip for two cups. A bit steep, we thought, but we went for it anyway. Well, my coffee arrived 30 minutes later than requested, and my sister's coffee never arrived at all. The order card wasn't offered again for the remainder of our stay. We felt inconvenienced by this and resented having to get dressed and walk two blocks to the earliest-opening coffee shop.
To some travelers this might not be a deal-breaker, but we are investigating other options for our next trip, as much as we love the HSF's atmosphere and location.

Room Tip: All rooms are on the small side, as this historic building can't be changed structurally. But th...
