“Good location, shabby room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2006

I'll start with the positives. First, the Pueblo Bonito's location is convenient to the restaurants, shops, and tourist sites of the historic district. You can park your car in the enclosed lot and forget about it -- a real boon, since parking can be a pain otherwise. From the outside, the hotel is very well kept and charming. The owners are friendly and helpful, and they genuinely seem to want to please. The place is well run. Breakfast was fine -- a continental spread of cereals, toast, bagels, fresh fruit, pastries, and your own pot of coffee.

I didn't give the hotel a higher mark because I was not that impressed with my room. (I stayed in the San Juan, no. 4.) Others have described the rooms as charming; maybe they stayed in a better one, I don't know. Personally, I found my room dark and shabby rather than charming. The bathroom was cramped and was in need of an update. It had a patched-up feel about it. I know you don't go to Santa Fe to stay in your room. But I would have liked more incentive to spend time in mine, rather than feeling relief at leaving it.

One reviewer said that he/she didn't feel safe walking back to the hotel at night. I was there by myself, and I can certainly sympathize about the route being a bit dark and deserted. But I don't think it's dangerous.

The Pueblo Bonito is convenient ly located and reasonably priced. But if you're looking for a room where you can kick back and spend a pleasant hour or two every day just hanging out -- and if you're particular about your bathrooms -- you may want to keep looking.

We enjoyed three evenings at this property recently.

It's located in a mostly residential area behind the capitol and not far from the plaza. An easy walk to the plaza, to Canyon Road, and conveniently located near the Guadalupe area. Easy to get in and out of.

The room was very nice. Lots of Santa Fe charm, Large, comfy. The iron and hair dryer were appreciated amenities we weren't expecting to find.

Towels seemed to be changed everyday which surprised us...we didn't find it necessary...we're happy to re-use towels...living in the desert ourselves maybe this struck us more than most customers.

We enjoyed the afternoon beverages and snacks a couple days. A nice touch. Honestly we didn't find breakfast to be anything special but were OK with this....so much good food in town we didn't need a large typically heavy B&B breakfast as well. Nice to be able to just have a piece of fruit, some yogurt, etc. The coffee was strong and hot.

We'd definitely stay here again. Not only a lovely property...but great location and fair price.

I called the B & B directly to inquire about a reservation. Someone picked up the phone, but then the call was disconnected. Thinking it was an accident, I called again and a man simply said Hello. After asking about availability I was given rates. I then began asking another question and he hung up on me! I'm moving on....

It is very, very common for cell phone useage in and around Santa Fe to be dropped- which is what happened with reviewer. We are at 7000 ft elevation and the mountain ranges while traveling cause this to happen. We frequently (daily) get calls from potential guests traveling from Albuquerque or Taos and thier cell calls get dropped.....or we are unable to hear them. We have no option but to hang up the phone and wait for them to try again. There is absolutely nothing we can do to improve on cell phone service- it is beyond our scope! For that we appologize. We also appologize that you were unable to have a great experience at our inn and would invite you to try us again (try a land line this time!). We don't think you'll be disappointed.

When booking this bed and breakfast, make sure you know that if you've committed to a room, you CANNOT leave after the 11:00am checkout under any circumstances. We had an emergency situation arise and the innkeeper would not let us cancel our reservation at around 5:00pm, despite the fact that he had empty rooms & could have easily booked despite us. The breakfasts were fair - cold cereals & pastries.

This guest asked to check out at 6:30 pm Sunday evening (after cleaning staff had left; after receiving complimentary downtown parking for 7.5+ hours; after complimentary afternoon tea was over; after having full use of room amenities for the day- air conditioning, bathroom, bed, phone, tv, etc). The initial reason given to management by the guest (husband) was their plans had changed and they were heading up to Taos (50 miles away). They were NOT unhappy with Pueblo Bonito, it's accomodations, offerings, etc.. (this was actually stated by the guest!). When staff explained they would have to incur the charges for the room that night, the wife came back into the office stating there was an "emergency" and they "had to leave". We asked the guests what the "emergency" was... no explaination was given- none what so ever. We felt it fair to require payment for this couple since no real "emergency" existed - this is supported by the fact that the couple ended up staying with us even with the "impending emergency".
Extreme circumstances are completely understood and acceptable as legitimate reasons to release our guests from obligations to us, which we have done graciously in the past, however this was not the case.

We spent two nights at Pueblo Bonito and were very pleased with our entire stay. The room was comfortable, the service was excellent, breakfast was good and they had small separate tables inside and outside to relax and enjoy the lovely area. The afternoon Margaritas and snacks were a nice extra treat. The owner was very accommodating. It's close enough to the Plaza and Canyon Road to walk while being able to return to a very charming and serene place.

Charming is the only way to describe this great b&b. My family and I stayed for 5 days and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves- it really gave our trip to Santa Fe "flavor"! Pueblo Bonito b&b was clean, spacious, comfortable, non-precocious and very inviting. My parents, two teenagers, husband and myself were all very happy with the entire set up. It was extremely convenient to the walk to all the downtown "sights". Our kids took off in the morning and explored shops while we went museum hopping. I felt very secure allowing this to happen- the city isn't that large and it is friendly, clean and safe. Santa Fe is full of amaziing art, crafts, history and culture. Pueblo Bonito really supported the Old West "feel" that we loved on our visit. It was "historic native american charming" with it's rich involved history of the area, it's southwestern ambiance and well preserved historic archeticture..... it was charming! We loved every minute we were there.

My husband and I stayed at this charming B&B from May 6th through 11th and we were thoroughly delighted. The location and the price were outstanding. We are both travel agents and we will certainly recommend this establishment to anyone who wants to be well-located in Santa Fe at a reasonable price.
The building is old and historic, so one should not expect slick new digs, however the suite we stayed in was always clean and tidy. We were in the Comanche suite which is in reality a mini-apartment. It had plenty of windows and tons of closet space.
We walked everywhere in Santa Fe from our B&B.....Santa Fe's downtown area is not that big and even the furthest art galleries on Canyon Road were at best a 15 minute walk. We did not find walking back from the restaurants in the evening a problem at all. We did not find anything "scary" at all about the downtown area, even at night.
The breakfast is bountiful and has lots of variety. They don't have a commercial kitchen so they are unable to cook hot food, like eggs. However, they had several types of fresh fruit, pastries, muffins, and waffles, bread, English muffins which you could toast yourself. There was yogurt, different kinds of cold cereals, several choices of juice and really good coffee. Our hosts offered everyone a daily newspaper, and never once did we feel rushed, even when we got chatting with other guests for over an hour!
As for driving in Santa Fe.......we found the city extremely easy to get to know and had no problem finding what we were looking for. A couple of the restaurants we went to were on the other side of town so we chose to drive.
As for our hosts, Amy and Herb, they were always helpful and accommodating about anything we asked of them.
