“Prime location, fabulous hosts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

My husband and I were in town for the very first time to spend Opera Week with friends. Their B&B was full, so we found this location nearby. After having to put away the incorrect GPS directions, we discovered this gem well within walking distance of downtown. We stayed in the Tewa room, an apartment in its own right with large sitting room and a decent sized kitchen. It was charming and quite clean. We enjoyed our stay immensely. That said, the one in-window air conditioner is in the sitting room at the opposite end of the suite from the bedroom - don't expect to be chilly in bed unless you open the bedroom window, which has no screen (not too many bugs in the desert, but it also opens to the exterior of the "gated" complex). On a few days, we would have turned off the AC, but the windows around it are stuck shut, so there was little chance of cross-ventilation other than with the small crank-out kitchen windows. There is a step down between the front room and the kitchen which could use some decoration or extra lighting for safety. And if you are tall, be prepared to duck to take a shower - the shower head was not as high as my 5'10" head. Our visit ended during Indian Market. That weekend proved the parking lot needs 2 more spaces, but we never got trapped, and another guest was quite helpful directing us out of a tight corner. There are sitting areas tucked into the property that we should have taken advantage of. Breakfast was plentiful and cheerfully offered the days we attended. I wish we had been able to tour other rooms (didn't ask to) because I wonder if one of the others would fit us more. Oh, and it's a little tight on closet space in the bedroom - I used the closet in the sitting room (maybe I just pack too much). Less expensive than the hotels.

We're so glad you spent your first visit to Santa Fe with us! Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. I'm happy you enjoyed your stay overall—it certainly helps being just a short walk away from downtown. So much to see and do in the city, it can be hard to fit it all in in one trip!

I did want to clarify that Pueblo Bonito Inn is an historic adobe pueblo-style downtown bed and breakfast. We intentionally preserve the property to properly reflect the authenticity of Old Santa Fe's rich and distinguished architecture, heritage and culture. We didn't want an air conditioner intruding too much with that! However, we do appreciate the feedback, and we'll do what we can to maximize both your safety and comfort during your stay.

As for the parking situation, just about every parking lot in Santa Fe is packed to the brim at Indian Market. After all, it's the most popular event of the year in Santa Fe. Coupled with the Opera, it's difficult to find parking at all! At max capacity, our lot dos get full, yet all guests are able to park. Other places charge up to $35 a night, so we always appreciate considerate guests playing nicely in the parking lot.

Thanks again for taking the time to leave a review. We'd love to host you again on your next visit. I know we can find a room that's just perfect for you!

Sincerely,
Amy Behm

My partner and I stayed at Pueblo Bonito for 12 nights in October and thoroughly enjoyed it. We were in Room 10, Isleta, and it is very much like it looks in the pictures on the website. The microwave and refrigerator are handy, as are the small table and chairs. The location is ideal; you can walk to the Plaza, the Farmers Market, even Canyon Road. The free parking is a real plus and our wifi was very good. The breakfast included cold cereal, bagels, bread, yogurt, toaster waffles, a variety of coffee cakes as well as juice, coffee and tea. It was ample and attractively presented. Some reviewers have complained about water pressure in the showers, but we experienced no problems. The buildings are old and obviously there are differences among the units. It isn’t hard to imagine that the upkeep and maintenance on such a place is a never ending task but from our experience, they are doing a good job. Amy and Herb, the innkeepers, are pleasant and attentive hosts. Amy is a fount of information and Herb is a quiet efficient presence. We enjoyed our late afternoon conversations with Strelsa over tea and cookies or punch with chips and salsa. If you are looking for big hotel amenities, this is not the place for you—no gym, no bellhops, no luxurious towels in more than ample supply. We love to be in the center of a city rather than out on a main road in a chain hotel. We like places with windows that open and that have their own unique charm—the kind you can remember you’ve stayed at! Pueblo Bonito filled the bill. We’d certainly stay here again.

Thank you so much for the lovely review, and detailed comments of your experience with us at Pueblo Bonito bed and breakfast. It was our pleasure to host you for those 12 days. We certainly don't lack both charm and personality at Pueblo Bonito bed and breakfast and I'm glad you appreciated both!

Thank you for mentioning a few reasons why Pueblo Bonito Inn is such a great bargain: Our location- a short walk from the city's finest attractions; A hearty breakfast- to get you going, ready to attack the day with plenty of variety for 12 days! Afternoon tea and fast reception wi-fi are always appreciated after a full day of exploration. A peaceful historic adobe compound setting to receive an authentic Santa Fe vacation experience.

Thank you for your acknowledgement of our friendly, sincere customer service as we (the owners) and our staff strive to make ourselves available to help guests make the most out of valuable vacation time. I'll share this review with Herb and Strelsa, as I know they'll really appreciate it. And we're happy to chat about anything or offer suggestions for activities to do out on the town. After all, we've been innkeeping here for over 28 years, so we know a thing or two about Santa Fe!

Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience. We'd love to host you again on your return visit!

Sincerely,
Amy

We enjoyed our stay at Pueblo Bonito for several reasons. First the location, right across from the state capitol and within easy walking distance of the plaza, is ideal. From previous visits, I felt you get a better experience of Santa Fe if you stay somewhere in the downtown area. This location is very good for taking advantage of all Santa Fe has to offer. Second, the innkeepers are very friendly and helpful. They gave us several tips to make the most of our visit. Also the breakfast was very good, in an attractive and comfortable breakfast area. The free parking and wifi were an added bonus. If you're looking for a very luxurious updated property, this may not be the place for you. We enjoyed the historical, authentic experience. We would stay here again if returning to Santa Fe. We were in the Acoma suite and it was nice to have room to spread out in the living area and kitchen.

Sharon,

We really appreciate the lovely review! Our location is something we're very proud of; after all, you're here to enjoy ALL Santa Fe has to offer. And being within walking distance of incredible attractions like the Plaza, Canyon Road and the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum (among many others) makes it easy to knock off a ton of things on your checklist. Of course, we're always available to help with questions, tips or recommendations.

What better way to start off your morning than with a hearty breakfast? And with our free wi-fi, you can check on any email, etc. that you need. Though we think the occasional disconnect is always welcome!

I really do thank you for taking the time to leave a review. The Acoma Suite is definitely a great one—did you know the Acoma Pueblo features an attraction called "Sky City," 250 dwellings that don't have electricity, water or sewer. Happy to provide you with a few more amenities here!

We'd love to see you again the next time you're in Santa Fe. Thanks again! This review is helpful for both us as owners and folks considering a stay with us.

Sincerely,
Amy Behm

I loved staying at the Pueblo Bonito Inn. The rooms were like small apartments and much bigger than I expected. They were super clean, and each room is unique. The staff was so friendly and helpful. Amy was very patient and helpful anytime I had to call with a question. It is in a great location, walking distance to everything. Also, be sure and order the tamales to have in your room- what a delicious surprise after a long flight! I'd definitely stay here again and am already thinking about when I can visit again.

As you touched on, we're just a short walk away to so much that Santa Fe has to offer. If you're ever stumped on what to do, we've got plenty of recommendations. We're here to make your visit a memorable one. We're so glad to know you enjoyed our sevices, property, location and city! Let us know the next time in town—can't wait to see you again!

This was my first stay in Santa Fe and this b&b was a great home base. Amy and Herb were beyond helpful with offering ideas as I didn't have an exact game plan of what I wanted to do. I stayed in room #8 which had a small kitchen and living area off the bedroom. They even cleaned your dirty dishes so you didn't have to worry about that. I was comfortable the whole time. The only downside if I had to pick one was the shower head didn't work that well. Breakfast was primarily continental style but there was enough to keep you well satisfied until you found lunch somewhere. I can't wait to do another trip back here.

Happy to help make your first visit to Santa Fe memorable, Kim! And you made a great choice staying in our Comanche Room, which is the largest and most popular bed and breakfast suite. Hopefully you got to accomplish everything on your list. There's so much to do here, it can tough to achieve it all in one visit!

As for your shower head, city code actually mandates that they be low flow. I'm sorry for any inconvenience that causes, but there's not a whole lot we can do about it.

Thank you again for choosing to stay with us, and for having a great attitude about exploring the city! We'd love to host you again the next time you're in town. Hope to see you soon!

Sincerely,
Amy

I wanted rave about this B&B located easy walking distance from downtown Santa Fe, mainly because the owners are so darn nice and eager to please.

Breakfast buffet in the common room is bright and airy, and Amy and Herb Behm always are present with a welcoming smile and knowledgeable suggestions about what to see and when. The breakfast buffet is ample, although no hot food is served (waffles are toaster-oven type). Plenty of delicious breads, cereals, jams, jellies, juices and yogurt. Very nice. Free WiFi.

But the rooms are showing every year of their many decades of service. A medicine cabinet with no shelves and rust stains at the bottom; once-elegant bathroom tiles in need of scrubbing; our toilet clogged at night, and we had to wait until morning for help; doors and walls could use a new coat of paint that is applied with care, not slopped on; amenities were skimpy (one face towel and bath towel per guest; a coffee pot but nothing else in the kitchen).

For all that, the room rate at about $150 in September 2013 was reasonable.

Hi Dan,

Thank you for your review. I'm glad you enjoy our breakfast, our proximity to Santa Fe's wonderful attractions as well as our attentive and friendly service. It certainly makes exploring easier when you can walk to so many different places quickly and receive expert consultation of the area! However, I'd like to address a few of your concerns if that's alright.

When your toilet was backed up, we'd have been happy to help, but unfortunately, as your wife confirmed, you misdialed the emergency after hours number. That is what caused the delay until the next morning, when we promptly addressed and took care of the situation which took all of 3 minutes to rectify.

I also made a thorough examination of Santo Domingo room- the room for which you stayed. The medicine cabinet did, in fact, have shelves. The cabinet is made of wood. No rust was found in or around the cabinet, sink, counter area, etc. Santo Domingo does not have a kitchen- so I'm confused as to many of the critical comments you stated. Yes, we are an older property and we do go to great lengths to keep all rooms comfortable, enjoyable, and clean. Our properties' history, age and quirkiness is what makes us unique and brings folks back year after year after year.

Thanks again for your feedback. You were a return guest so I invite you, if you feel comfortable, to come back for a future visit. Remember, you're always welcome at Pueblo Bonito b&b inn.

Best,
Amy Behm

I've traveled to Santa Fe at least once a year for 20+ years so I'm very familiar with the local accommodations, price ranges etc. This place is good value for money and a great place for people who understand the following:

- this is a historic property dating back to the 1800s -- used to be the in-town efficiency apartments for NM judges coming to the capitol for meetings etc. it has been well restored to modern standards, but the style is homey rather than $$$ high-end deluxe, so it doesn't look like a Ralph Lauren ad. If you want that look and level of fancy, there are other properties in town that will give you that, for way more money per night.

- conveniently located just inside Paseo de Peralta loop on the south side. You can walk in ~10-15 minutes to Guadelupe, Railyard, Plaza or Canyon Road. If you have difficulty walking or it's cold or rainy, you may just want to drive it.

- easy driving access in-and-out due to its location just off Paseo. Free onsite parking lot.

- rooms clean, beds comfortable, quiet/well insulated. Didn't hear any other guests. Wall unit AC (again this is an old building). Hot water was fine but pressure a bit low sometimes (old building ditto) but it wasn't a problem for showering.

- our room had a tiny equipped kitchen with mini-fridge and electric stove. We didn't cook but could have.

- comfortable sitting area / "lobby".

- continental type breakfast with cereal, breads, fruits etc. No proteins or hot stuff, fyi.

- some rooms are upstairs & there's no elevator, so be sure to select a downstairs roo when you reserve if you need one.

- staff were helpful without being intrusively friendly (we've had that problem at other B&Bs -- some owners & B&B guests think that because you're staying there, you have to act like BFFs and get into each other's lives; we're not into that, we prefer to be polite yet private).

- price to value: prices are in line with other lower-tier accommodations that are within walking distance of the plaza. Lowest tier stuff in this neighborhood starts around the $150 range and generally goes up to around $200/night range for Fri or Sat night or more for the holidays or a special event (Indian Market etc.). So some of the other reviewers who were saying "oh, it's kind of expensive" -- sorry, you have no idea what you're talking about. Walking distance central Santa Fe isn't cheap. Go out to Cerrillos Road if you need cheaper.

Bottom line I'd stay there again, this is a good deal for the neighborhood and we found it interesting to stay in an old building that had been restored but not fancied up too much.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such an accurately detailed review! It's true—our property is over 150 years old, and has been a b&b for the past 28 years. We've done our best to keep the authenticity of the property since my family acquired it in 1970. Over the years many upgrades, improvements, renovations have occurred but always emphasizing the integrity of the original architecture, local culture and historic charm. That includes 19 clean, comfortable guest rooms, each with wood burning corner kiva fireplace, full bathrooms, small refrigerators, microwaves, phones, cable flat screen TVs, wifi and other modern amenities. Of course these modern conveniences only enhance the 1860's Northern New Mexico architecture which boasts foot and a half thick adobe walls, nichos, bancos, vigas, wood/flagstone/brick flooring, pedestal sinks, quiet courtyards, mature shade trees, ornate wrought iron gates, and a Native American orno that is the only one in downtown Santa Fe!! Unique features that are completely uncommon to "modern day" construction and accommodations! Enchantingly Authentic Santa Fe as we like to describe it.

Of course, we know most of your experience while in Santa Fe will include exploration of this wonderful 400 yr old capitol city. We make it easy with free on-site parking and our location (next to the NM State Capitol) is prime providing guests a short stroll to numerous attractions like you mentioned. Guests love the ease of walking down to the plaza via Old Santa Fe Trail passing by the Capitol, San Miguel Mission, Oldest House, the Loretto Chapel, unique shops, and galleries. Canyon Rd, Guadalupe and Rail yard Districts are to our west and are also an easy walk for our art, shopping, gallery and nature enthusiasts. Recommendations come easy for us as so many and varied attractions can be enjoyed just steps from our doorstep!

As you said, we are very competitively priced for our location in a destination city like Santa Fe. Especially when factoring in all the freebies included with a stay at Pueblo Bonito Inn—everything talked about so far, as well as breakfast, afternoon tea, and Wifi- it's an outright bargain!

We really do appreciate you taking the time to leave this review. As owners, sites like TripAdvisor are very helpful in spreading the word and all we have to offer. We'd look forward to seeing you again the next time you're in Santa Fe!

Sincerely,
Amy Behm
