“I wish I could like this B&B more”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

I wanted rave about this B&B located easy walking distance from downtown Santa Fe, mainly because the owners are so darn nice and eager to please.

Breakfast buffet in the common room is bright and airy, and Amy and Herb Behm always are present with a welcoming smile and knowledgeable suggestions about what to see and when. The breakfast buffet is ample, although no hot food is served (waffles are toaster-oven type). Plenty of delicious breads, cereals, jams, jellies, juices and yogurt. Very nice. Free WiFi.

But the rooms are showing every year of their many decades of service. A medicine cabinet with no shelves and rust stains at the bottom; once-elegant bathroom tiles in need of scrubbing; our toilet clogged at night, and we had to wait until morning for help; doors and walls could use a new coat of paint that is applied with care, not slopped on; amenities were skimpy (one face towel and bath towel per guest; a coffee pot but nothing else in the kitchen).

For all that, the room rate at about $150 in September 2013 was reasonable.

Hi Dan,

Thank you for your review. I'm glad you enjoy our breakfast, our proximity to Santa Fe's wonderful attractions as well as our attentive and friendly service. It certainly makes exploring easier when you can walk to so many different places quickly and receive expert consultation of the area! However, I'd like to address a few of your concerns if that's alright.

When your toilet was backed up, we'd have been happy to help, but unfortunately, as your wife confirmed, you misdialed the emergency after hours number. That is what caused the delay until the next morning, when we promptly addressed and took care of the situation which took all of 3 minutes to rectify.

I also made a thorough examination of Santo Domingo room- the room for which you stayed. The medicine cabinet did, in fact, have shelves. The cabinet is made of wood. No rust was found in or around the cabinet, sink, counter area, etc. Santo Domingo does not have a kitchen- so I'm confused as to many of the critical comments you stated. Yes, we are an older property and we do go to great lengths to keep all rooms comfortable, enjoyable, and clean. Our properties' history, age and quirkiness is what makes us unique and brings folks back year after year after year.

Thanks again for your feedback. You were a return guest so I invite you, if you feel comfortable, to come back for a future visit. Remember, you're always welcome at Pueblo Bonito b&b inn.

Best,
Amy Behm

5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

I've traveled to Santa Fe at least once a year for 20+ years so I'm very familiar with the local accommodations, price ranges etc. This place is good value for money and a great place for people who understand the following:

- this is a historic property dating back to the 1800s -- used to be the in-town efficiency apartments for NM judges coming to the capitol for meetings etc. it has been well restored to modern standards, but the style is homey rather than $$$ high-end deluxe, so it doesn't look like a Ralph Lauren ad. If you want that look and level of fancy, there are other properties in town that will give you that, for way more money per night.

- conveniently located just inside Paseo de Peralta loop on the south side. You can walk in ~10-15 minutes to Guadelupe, Railyard, Plaza or Canyon Road. If you have difficulty walking or it's cold or rainy, you may just want to drive it.

- easy driving access in-and-out due to its location just off Paseo. Free onsite parking lot.

- rooms clean, beds comfortable, quiet/well insulated. Didn't hear any other guests. Wall unit AC (again this is an old building). Hot water was fine but pressure a bit low sometimes (old building ditto) but it wasn't a problem for showering.

- our room had a tiny equipped kitchen with mini-fridge and electric stove. We didn't cook but could have.

- comfortable sitting area / "lobby".

- continental type breakfast with cereal, breads, fruits etc. No proteins or hot stuff, fyi.

- some rooms are upstairs & there's no elevator, so be sure to select a downstairs roo when you reserve if you need one.

- staff were helpful without being intrusively friendly (we've had that problem at other B&Bs -- some owners & B&B guests think that because you're staying there, you have to act like BFFs and get into each other's lives; we're not into that, we prefer to be polite yet private).

- price to value: prices are in line with other lower-tier accommodations that are within walking distance of the plaza. Lowest tier stuff in this neighborhood starts around the $150 range and generally goes up to around $200/night range for Fri or Sat night or more for the holidays or a special event (Indian Market etc.). So some of the other reviewers who were saying "oh, it's kind of expensive" -- sorry, you have no idea what you're talking about. Walking distance central Santa Fe isn't cheap. Go out to Cerrillos Road if you need cheaper.

Bottom line I'd stay there again, this is a good deal for the neighborhood and we found it interesting to stay in an old building that had been restored but not fancied up too much.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such an accurately detailed review! It's true—our property is over 150 years old, and has been a b&b for the past 28 years. We've done our best to keep the authenticity of the property since my family acquired it in 1970. Over the years many upgrades, improvements, renovations have occurred but always emphasizing the integrity of the original architecture, local culture and historic charm. That includes 19 clean, comfortable guest rooms, each with wood burning corner kiva fireplace, full bathrooms, small refrigerators, microwaves, phones, cable flat screen TVs, wifi and other modern amenities. Of course these modern conveniences only enhance the 1860's Northern New Mexico architecture which boasts foot and a half thick adobe walls, nichos, bancos, vigas, wood/flagstone/brick flooring, pedestal sinks, quiet courtyards, mature shade trees, ornate wrought iron gates, and a Native American orno that is the only one in downtown Santa Fe!! Unique features that are completely uncommon to "modern day" construction and accommodations! Enchantingly Authentic Santa Fe as we like to describe it.

Of course, we know most of your experience while in Santa Fe will include exploration of this wonderful 400 yr old capitol city. We make it easy with free on-site parking and our location (next to the NM State Capitol) is prime providing guests a short stroll to numerous attractions like you mentioned. Guests love the ease of walking down to the plaza via Old Santa Fe Trail passing by the Capitol, San Miguel Mission, Oldest House, the Loretto Chapel, unique shops, and galleries. Canyon Rd, Guadalupe and Rail yard Districts are to our west and are also an easy walk for our art, shopping, gallery and nature enthusiasts. Recommendations come easy for us as so many and varied attractions can be enjoyed just steps from our doorstep!

As you said, we are very competitively priced for our location in a destination city like Santa Fe. Especially when factoring in all the freebies included with a stay at Pueblo Bonito Inn—everything talked about so far, as well as breakfast, afternoon tea, and Wifi- it's an outright bargain!

We really do appreciate you taking the time to leave this review. As owners, sites like TripAdvisor are very helpful in spreading the word and all we have to offer. We'd look forward to seeing you again the next time you're in Santa Fe!

Sincerely,
Amy Behm

We are always charmed by Pueblo Bonita at how they are able to retain the simple Santa Fe style in the midst of a changing Santa Fe art world and outsiders! Pueblo style, Geeat breakfast, informed host and hostess! A delight!

Janet,

A delight! We appreciate your compliments and appreciation of our property, services and staff. Thank you very much for the five stars. Our goal is to be your home away from home—and with cozy, comfortable rooms, a filling breakfast, and kind owners who are here to answer your questions or provide guidance—it sounds like we achieved just that. Our property is extremely unique. Not hard to find similar adobe archeticture in the historic distric, but hard to find it's authentic retention to detail and did you know we are the only property in downtown Santa Fe that you will still find a real orno oven built in the 1800's? Pretty cool if we must say so ourselves!!

We're happy to host you anytime you're in town. Thanks again!

Sincerely,
Amy Behm

We booked here on very short notice for a much needed Labor Day getaway. Price was excellent $159 per night for a very large space - with a full kitchen, living room and master bedroom called the Comanche Room. A very quick six block walk to the Plaza. We wanted to give it an A - but it is really a B or B-. Mostly little things and one big thing dragging it down. Problems - shower head needs to be totally replaced. Not enough water flow to rinse off the soap. Need a better soap anyway - we got a locally made one that was wonderful. Bedspread ugly and not warm - we got our own blanket to use instead. Parking is free ( yaay) but lot fills up too tight and getting in and out of spaces early in the morning is a pain. We planned to stay for four nights, ended up leaving after three and still got nicked for the 4th night. On the third night the people upstairs were loud and drunk. Suggest booking upstairs room if possible next time. Positives are really big -- culturally historic buildings, absolutely great location, huge room that is very comfortable, super king bed, wifi worked perfectly. We didn't have breakfast on site having heard it was not special and not being very social in the mornings anyway. Made tea in the kitchen and stocked up on water for hiking. Tons of great restaurants and coffee shops within very easy walking distance. The owner was very nice on the phone making the reservations - and did say there was basically NO way to cancel once the rez was set but I still think a more gracious and understanding and savvy businessperson would have been thankful for three nights and let us off the hook or split the difference on the 4th night. To me that is just smart business. Overall - we would recommend it but have medium not high expectations and do try to get a room upstairs. Comanche room could be much better with about an hour and $150 worth of investment on the owners part and I hope they do it.

Room Tip: Get a higher room upstairs for star watching. Santa Fe is a dark skies city and you can see a ton ju...

Thank you for visiting and taking the time to leave a review. I'm disappointed that your experience was only so-so. I'd love to chat a bit about how you feel we can improve.

If there are any problems with your room, please let us know during your stay. We'd be happy to do our best to fix them. We're mandated by city code to keep all shower heads low flow, which possibly to some folks coming from areas of the country with an abundance of water, may seem like they're not working up to par. Unfortunately, we can't change that, but we can educate our guests about it! Similarly, if the upstairs folks were too noisy, you can always tell us and we'll take care of it as well. To clarify: This was a group of three couples meeting for a reunion in Santa Fe who were sitting on our sundeck enjoying a bottle of wine and returned to thier rooms around 10:00 pm.

As for your reservation, your visit was over Labor Day weekend—a busy holiday. If we're able to rent an unoccupied room, we will not charge for short notice cancellations. In your case, notice was given the day of departure when advance travel arrangements had already been made by other travelers. Please remember, we're not a large hotel and only have 19 rooms. Courtesy in communication is essential on both sides of the relationship in order to keep things running smoothly!

It sounds like you had a pleasant stay overall, though, and I'm happy you took advantage of most of what we had to offer. We certainly are very close to a number of attractions, including the Plaza and Canyon Road just to name a few. And with a very comfortable room with complimentary wi-fi, you'll have plenty of opportunity to relax, as well. It's disappointing you didn't give the breakfast a try, though, as there's lots to enjoy! Tasty coffee cake, salmon smears on a variety of bagels, raspberry preserves, just to name a few favorites.

I do appreciate the feedback, and hopefully I was able to clear up a few concerns. Please feel free to be in touch with any other questions. Thanks again, and we'd love to host you on your next journey to Santa Fe!

Best,
Amy Behm

This B&B is beautiful with a rich history. The room was great! The location in relation to the historic plaza was convenient. The breakfast was no better than a Hampton Inn, nothing was made fresh. The staff and owners were not very warm or welcoming. It appeared they were a bit burnt out. The price was a bit high for its location, but still a decent price.

Jules,

Thanks very much for taking the time to leave a review. I'm so happy your room was comfy, and yes, our location is "prime"- we agree! Walking to the Plaza and other Santa Fe attractions definately has its perks! Our nightly rates not only include our convenient location full of historic Santa Fe beauty and charm- as you attested to above- but also complimentary parking, WiFi, breakfast buffet and afternoon tea. Recently voted "Most Likely to Return 2013" by our guests from over 8,500 properties in the US and Canada is a huge compliment to the degree of satisfaction our guests enjoy. As far as prices go, you'll find we're one of the most competitively-priced place to stay in the downtown area!

Thanks again for your feedback. I'm sorry if you ever felt unwelcome; that was certainly not our intention. After 28 years of consecutive innkeeping we still find enjoyment serving our guests every day as we consider each to be a blessing. We're always happy to host you anytime, and would love to see you soon.

Sincerely,
Amy Behm

We have stayed at Pueblo Bonito many times, and always leave looking forward to our next visit. Hosts Amy and Herb are delightful and obviously enjoy their many guests. They provide a warm, welcoming, personal stay, and are very knowledgeable about Santa Fe events, activities, restaurants, etc--and will make reservations for you. The Inn is always immaculate, breakfast is abundant and delicious, and one can walk to the Plaza in 5 minutes. Very moderately priced for Santa Fe. We will return!!

Thanks for leaving us another review! It's always a pleasure hosting you. Our repeat guests have become more like "family" than guests! We sincerely appreciate that you value your experiences over the past 20+ years with us and still choose time and time again to make us your "Santa Fe home". We know there are several options available to you in downtown Santa Fe, but strive to provide the most traditional, truly Old Santa Fe lodging experience at an affordable price that we can! We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Another lovely stay at the Pueblo Bonito in Santa Fe. The rooms are lovely, clean, and the location of this b&b couldn't be more ideal for exploring all that downtown Santa Fe has to offer. Minutes from the Canyon Road gallery district, shopping, Collected Works Bookstore--really a perfect place to stay. Amy and Herb, this inn's longtime owners, remain friendly, remarkably helpful and accommodating, without any degree of intrusion. I'll return again and again and would recommend Pueblo Bonito to anyone wanting a comfortable, convenient Santa Fe experience.

And a lovely review, as well! Thank you so much for the five stars and your loyal patronage over the years. We certainly do pride ourselves in our cozy, clean rooms, but even better, we're so close to the highlights of Santa Fe. You mentioned a few—Canyon Road, for one—but we're also just a quick stroll to Santa Fe's plaza, the NM State Capitol and a number of world class museums. It's a lot easier to accomplish everything on your list when you're close to it all!

We're always happy to host you, and we really do cherish your recommendation. It's very helpful to prospective guests, as well. Thanks again!

Sincerely,
Amy
