“Almost perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2013

The Buffalo Thunder front desk staff, the interior of the resort and casino, and amenities were as much as one can ask for, including for the price. Worth the drive far from town, since once one arrives, most everything melts away.

This is my 2nd time in to stay here, and my room was impeccable...in fact, due to it being a busy weekend with events in Santa Fe and even the Balloon Fiesta 90 minutes away in Albuquerque, the king bed room I booked was not available, so they upgraded me into the king suite...think conference room table, big living room, large wet bar. My only regret was not arriving earlier and with colleagues to host a great meeting and enjoy it more!

Only down point is the site landscaping...too much gravel cover, no water harvesting, not enough native plants and trees to do justice to the uber-stunning high plateau setting. But that's the only drawback, and not quite enough to affect my rating.

Room Tip: Seems many have a view; arrive early so you can enjoy it some, including your patio.

The rooms are comfortable, if a bit noisy, and are very clean. The price is much, much lower than at comparable hotels near Santa Fe Plaza. The shower is good, unless you don't like "rainfall" shower heads, or precariously balancing on one foot to shave each leg. On arrival, try to find a bellhop to carry your bags; no carts are made available in the lobby, and the interminable slog to our room had us wishing for a rickshaw service. With the building's extremely limited entry/exit options, many rooms require a long hike to get to the parking lot. The staff was pleasant, but not overly so--not surprising, given the swarm of people in the lobby. The casino appears to attract some questionable types, but the entire casino area can be easily avoided. The restaurants, which are adjacent to the casino, should be avoided. The buffet is especially depressing. Either drive to Santa Fe or Espanola, or hike to a restaurant called Gabriel's, on the frontage road just south of the hotel.

Except for the somewhat masochistic hotel layout and the abominable dining options, the hotel is a good choice, especially if you are looking for a bargain.

The hotel/casino complex is huge, and it's done in a southwestern theme. Hilton obviously spent a lot of money on decor and design, the hotel looks good inside and outside. We went for a cheap room and had zero view - the windows looked over a room and an air conditioner. Despite this, the room looked fine, and it was mostly quiet. Unfortunately our neighbors were loud at times, getting into a shouting match at 1 am - well I guess that's expected in a casino/hotel, but the walls are obviously not soundproofed. The reason we chose the hotel was its pool - it looked great on the pictures. In real life it's fine, but the water is a bid dirty and since it's not heated, a shower chilled it just the day before we arrived. Still, the kids had a great time splashing around. You can rent a cabana, which is expensive but can make a big difference. The cabana next to us seemed to be taken over a group of young men who didn't seem to pay for it or even be guests at the hotel, but they looked intimidating enough that nobody challenged them. The complex has a very expensive restaurant, a relatively affordable buffet that serves horrible food - avoid if possible, though it is convenient for breakfast - and there is a deli in the casino which is surprisingly good and affordable. My advice is: eat somewhere in town if possible. The weekend we visited the hotel put on a fireworks show to celebrate their anniversary - it was a professional, 30 minute show. The hotel is not close to town, but it's right on a highway and you can get to downtown Santa Fe in about 15 minutes. It's also convenient for a day-trip to Taos, as it's on the road to Taos, which is about a 90 minute drive from the hotel (frankly, it's not worth it unless you have seen all there is to see in Santa Fe).

Room Tip: Go for a room on the higher floors.

This Buffalo Thunder property itself is beautiful and nicely decorated. The rooms are just like any other Hilton - neat, a little small, thin walls, and only basic amenities. We have stayed here twice and did not sleep well either time (the other guests and cleaning staff were noisy). This hotel has those horrible banging doors on every room. The woman at the front desk was polite, but not overly helpful or eager to grant special requests. I will always stay across the parking lot at the Homewood Suites if given the choice. This room was comped by the casino which was appreciated, so of course we stayed here. This Hilton is nice and "will do", but stay at HS instead of you can.

The Buffalo Thunder Resort is absolutely beautiful! I highly recommend a visit to experience it for yourself. I live a 30 minute drive from the resort and stayed with friends just for a girlfriend getaway. I will plan to do this again in the future as it was a joyful experience.

Excellent resort. Great Location. Staff and service was gracious and accommodating. Room was full of old world charm and ambiance. King Terrace suite was roomy and very comfortable. Experience on mountain golf course was wonderful. Scenery was spectacular.

Hotel staff is great. I would return to this property again. The property is beautiful. The mountains in the background are amazing. The restaurants are very good. The parrott buffet for breakfast was delicious. The pool area was very pleasant and relaxing. I really enjoyed my time at the Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino.
