“A Great Getaway!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2012

Buffalo Thunder Resort is about 15 minutes north of Santa Fe in a beautiful setting. My wife and I like to go here for a quick getaway and coming here is like traveling to much further destinations without the long trip.
The setting is beautiful with some rooms overlooking the pool area and some rooms looking out toward the mountains of Santa Fe or Los Alamos. The hotel, run by Hilton, is everything that you would expect it to be; clean, well run, and nicely decorated.
The buffet is very good and was well patronized on the Sunday night we were there. The casino is nice, even though it is on the small size. We won enough money to pay for dinner!
In the past we have visited in the winter and the indoor pool is amazing. Highly recommended.
My only complaint would be the charge for internet. This is obscene and a practice that needs to stop. The only way I can visit nice places like this is having the ability to work and take care of business when I need to. Being penalized to access the internet is no longer acceptable. Would you charge me to use the TV? What about the toilet?
The other issue is calling the hotel, which I did to see if I could check in early. After going through the various options to reach reservations or the front desk, I gave up when being put on hold for several minutes. I called back and just hit "0" and was connected to the front desk right away. Keep this in mind and bypass the phone options.
I definitely recommend this hotel if you are in the area. I've not patronized the spa or golf course, but they look great also.

We attended a wonderful wedding on Sept.3, that of my youngest son! We booked a block of rooms well in advance so we could visit our guests. When we arrived we discoved we were all spread out over all 5 floors. We decided to make the biggest room our meeting place. We were given key cards to the fifth floor where this room was. However the keys would not work for our guests. Needless to say we spent hours to fix this error, which cut into our evening.I was really disappointed as it was the night before the wedding, and we were anxious to greet everyone.Hope to spend their anniversary there next year, but will be very specific with the booked accomadations.

Thank you for choosing to stay with us for your son’s big day and for providing feedback on your experience with us. I am glad to hear you enjoyed your rooms and were able to visit with family, however I apologize that your room assignment was not conducive to a family gathering. We strive to accommodate all reservations and when you come back next year, we will be sure to book your party all on the same floor. Thank you again for choosing to spend this important time with us and we wish your son and his wife the best moving forward in their marriage.

Thank you,
Evan Fresquez

A wonderful, wonderful stay. However, be prepared to lose your shirt if you are gambling (duh).
Seriously, this casino will not give an inch...which ain't very sportin'.

But the hotel is gorgeous. Unfortunately, there is no breakfast. There is a sister hotel next door which DOES offer breakfast but is nowhere as nice as the Hilton. Again, not very sportin'.
If I'm going to lose my shirt, at least feed me a couple scraps!!!

This is not particularly cheap either but not unaffordable. Of course, you have amenities out the wazoo...fireplace, vernada with a view, designer soaps and shampoos, robes etc., etc.

Great accommodations. Hilton’s manager Jason upgraded me to a suite with 2 bathrooms and a fireplace. During my stay, there was a wine tasting dinner. Wine was good and the dinner was excellent at the Red Sage restaurant. Staff was friendly and very helpful. Shuttles too popular attractions in Santa Fe. Many thanks to the Mark the G M of the casino. With my rated play the casino took care of my charges. This is a great place to stay and play.

Room Tip: Try to get upgrated to the 5th floor. Most rooms have a fireplace.

This is a fairly new place, and we liked it so much, we wish we had time to stay more than one night. The price was very reasonable and the hotel is built in the pueblo revival style and it works so well with the countryside around it. We had a gorgeous room with a veranda which ran the length of the suite and gave us views of the desert and the golf course.

We enjoyed having an onsite casino and the choice of bars and restaurants. There were a couple of really nice shops inside with very friendly staff. The decor is so tastefully done, with huge statues and ornate hangings. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone, Santa Fe is very busy and out here you can get away from the hustle and yet have everything on site.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the golf course and a veranda.

Stayed for three nights—Thursday through Saturday. Hotel was very attractive and filled with fantastic contemporary Native American artwork. Staff was friendly and helpful. It’s located north of Santa Fe and easily accessible from the Interstate, but you do feel pretty isolated. The Red Sage Restaurant was good, but a bit elaborate if you’re not looking for a “dining experience” (their lounge area was very pleasant and shared the Red Sage menu). The Mica Restaurant might have been a possibility but we were told it was only open weekends and it may have only been open for lunch. The Painted Parrot Buffet was pretty typical of casino buffets. What they don’t tell you is that you actually can order from a menu in the “Painted Parrot” so it is the only real option for breakfast, aside from Starbucks which did have rolls or a microwaved breakfast burrito. Restaurants off the gaming area in the lower level require wandering through a haze of smoke (smoke that rushes up the escalators into the main floor hallway as well). I tried the Turquoise Trail Bar & Grille and the hamburger was tasty enough, but the service was slow and the atmosphere about what you’d expect in a casino. Gabriel’s, a restaurant one exit closer to Santa Fe was the best casual eatery we found. If they had a more normal coffee shop, it would help a lot. Even so, the rooms and the public spaces were great. Pool area was very pleasant as well.

thanks to all the front desk staff that made our stay very pleasant, we remember wanda but there were others too. the breakfast staff were also very friendly and eager to please.

as other posters have commented, the hotel is outside santa fe but is easy to reach by car. no need to pay inflated central santa fe hotel rates, you can stay here in a spacious, light suite instead.

wifi is unreliable though, the hotel needs to fix this.
