“Fabulous Hotel, Great Staff and Pet Friendly, too!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2010

Sharon from Arvada CO

My husband and I have stayed here four times in the past three years. What drew us here initially was the proximity to the Plaza. What keeps us coming back is the pet friendly staff. They remember Skooter, our JRT, more than they do us! ; )
We were pleasantly surprised with a fireplace in the separate sitting area of our room. We received a generous stack of pinon wood soon after our request at the front desk. The beds were were super fluffy and comfy - had a great night's sleep!
The courtyard area is very cute, yet roomy enough for a game of fetch. Each room has a little bistro set where you can enjoy morning coffe or an evening cocktail. The decorations are elegant and tastefully reflect the Santa Fe style.
I'm a runner, so location to safe running areas is very important to me. I had no problem finding safe routes and had a great time "touring" local neighborhoods on foot. Santa Fe-ans were out walking every morning; those with dogs allowed Skooter a bit of play in the park.
Hotel Front desk staff, heck all staff, were very friendly and helpful, suggesting places to visit and dine in other areas of Santa Fe and Taos.
Considering that the hotel is steps away from the Plaza, this is a great value.
We'll be going to Santa Fe again soon for my annual birthday trip and we will definitely be staying at the Hotel Plaza Real!

It is a rare occasion when I want to warn people away from a travel experience, but this hotel is nothing like its website photos suggest. The furnishings were threadbare, the linens were tattered (bed & bath), and there was an odd odor reminiscent of a frat party carpet. It was quite expensive, most likely due to its very convenient location on the square, but not a value if one is looking for comfort & cleanliness. When I called the front desk about the lack of heat, I was dismissed and no one ever came to help.

Hotel Plaza Real was a bit of a mixed bag, but mostly good. Its location just steps away from Santa Fe's main plaza was excellent. The room was a junior suite, with a wood-burning fireplace and comfortable king bed. Small bathroom (it was difficult to close the door if you weren't in the shower) but functional. The housekeeping left something to be desired. The cleaners didn't replace the plastic drink cups, overlooked some trash, didn't clean the ash out of the fireplace for the five days we were there, and we had to ask each night for more firewood. The hotel was short-staffed, and though they always delivered what we requested, sometimes it took a while and it was the desk clerk who brought the items. Desk personnel were reasonably helpful, though some were inexperienced, like not knowing how to give internet access codes or give directions to basic things like the garage. We got a tremendously inexpensive deal on the room through Expedia -- well under $100 a night -- explained in part because the first week of January is the deadest week of the year in Santa Fe, according to the locals. The $14 per day parking, however, was exorbitant; parking at the hotel where we stayed in Albuquerque was $10. All in all, it was a great deal for the money.

Hotel is great location for Santa Fe Plaza stay. Staff were great, get a room with fire place during winter it makes the place. We have stayed in several around the plaza, this was easy to get into and bring our lugage in and out. Will definately stay again. Only neg was no one mentioned that the parking was not included with the room and was $14 per day.

A friend and I spent 3 nights while visiting Santa Fe on a leisure trip. We had a loft double balcony which was clean with very comfortable beds. The quality of the sheets, towels and washcloths were average. If you prefer lush linens when you travel, you will not be happy here. However, if your priority is a great location for exploring the Plaza and downtown that is affordable, clean and friendly you'll be pleased.

A couple of things you should know before booking a room. The hotel has underground parking for $14 per night. This is worth the price. If you have difficulty climbing stairs make sure if you book a loft that it is one that you can use the elevator to get to. Access to our loft was up a narrow and somewhat steep staircase. This would have been impossible for travelers with handicaps or physical problems.

Overall the property was nice and put everything in walking proximity. The only complaint I have would be that the "junior suite" we stayed in backed to Nusbaum St and since there's nothing but a door and windows (that open to a shared balcony) to insulate against the noise - situated there you'll have a greater chance of experiencing a number of unexpected auditory disturbances. Otherwise the room was clean - even the bathroom - and the bed very comfortable. And of all things I was grateful for the ceiling fan for the white noise and moving the air around a bit. Parking was $14/day in a garage below the property which made things very convenient as most nearby parking is parallel and metered. Staff was courteous and helpful. Overall, this place was great and I'd stay again (although I'd ask about a room that doesn't face a street.)

We arrived in Santa Fe after dark, and had trouble locating hotels ... just happened to see the sign for the Plaza Real while driving by and stopped. Very glad we did. The hotel is laid out along a charming courtyard, has an excellent bar, and is half a block from the Plaza, the center of Santa Fe. We didn't experience any of the problems mentioned by some of the other reviewers ... everything was clean, comfortable and efficient. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the secure parking was a bonus. Not having an elevator was a bit of a problem ... we had to drag heavy baggage up a flight of stairs to our room ... but the room itself was great right down to the balcony overlooking the courtyard. It's fairly expensive, but worth it for the location in the center of this beautiful town.
