“Will always stay here when in Santa Fe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2010

The El Rey Inn is just perfect. Quaint, beautiful, clean and friendly. We stayed a couple nights in early October and the grounds were very pretty. Our room was really nice with everything we needed. The breakfast is nothing short of lovely - with the table settings and the classical guitar music playing, very calm and inviting. the workers were all above average kindness. There is a a realy big beautiful pool with a seperate hot tub / Jacuzzi which is in it's own room. There is also the largest hot tub I've ever seen, it was really deep and nice and hot - this one is set with an open sky, sitting area for several people and a fireplace! Gorgeous. There is a sauna in this area too. You can walk to restaurants and everything is within a couple miles. While there, drive the enchanted circle if you can, breath-taking!

What a great place to stay when you're in Santa Fe!!! My wife and I had spent a hectic couple of weeks touring the mid west and we chose Santa Fe to 'chill out' for a few nights. We chose this place - mainly because of the good reviews - and we are so glad we did!!!! Everything about the place shouts western hospitality. From booking in to checking out, the staff couldn't have been more helpful. The rooms are cosy and clean, the gardens neat and relaxing, the swimming pool warm and inviting!!!!!
The only gripe most people seem to have is that it's quite away from the plaza. Well, yes it is, but it's only a short drive downtown and there is plenty of parking, but the easiest option is to take a bus. There's a stop right outside the hotel, so my wife and took the bus downtown. (As were both over 60 it was only 50 cents for a return ride!!!! Great value.)
If I were to return to Santa Fe, I would certainly stay there again.

I've stayed at different places in Santa Fe over the years ... I've now found THE place I'll come back to. The El Ray Inn is conveniently located on Cerrillos Road & is easy to find. I love the "motor inn" style of the property, and the grounds were beautiful! Every staff member I encountered was most pleasant & courteous. The rooms were very comfortable; had large bathrooms with double sinks. The hot tub was fantastic! The continental breakfast was excellent, and the dining area was lovely! I will recommend this property to anyone I know that's going to Santa Fe!

I spent 5 nights with my elderly mom in a suite (#62) at the El Rey. We had 2 rooms, a bedroom with a king bed and a sitting room with kitchenette, table, a queen murphy bed and a gas log fireplace that didn't ignite when I idly experimented (it was still hot outside). The bathroom was tiled and just big enough. The motel and grounds are a bit threadbare, but popular for the price in overpriced Santa Fe. Our suite, though funky, was a lot of space for $171/night in this town. If I could have found something more upscale for less than another $100 per night, I definitely would have taken it, not being wowed by the romance of an old motel on Rte. 66. I understand that the El Rey is still family owned and run, and the service was excellent, from a hairdryer being instantly provided to the door after a call for help when the one in the room didn't work, to a series of valuable suggestions about where to eat, how to get places, where my mom could get her hair done, etc. But the room was a bit moldy smelling and dark, the couch had to be moved and the rug unsnagged every time the murphy bed came down, the curtains didn't cover the windows opening onto the courtyard in the sitting/bedroom, the AC was rather loud with byzantine controls. We could hear our neighbors' TVs, conversations and plumbing, which varied from companionable to irritating. The breakfast was continental plus hard boiled eggs, and quite crowded. The location, about halfway between the Plaza and the edge of town, turned out to be pretty convenient. So all in all a mixed bag, recommended only with caveats.

We booked this motel on the basis of previous reviews and found it to be very pleasant indeed. Our room was small and if we were to go back would definitely book one of the larger suites. The room was very clean and the staff were very friendly, especially the couple who serve in the breakfast room. The continental breakfast was very nice and the breakfast room is really lovely. Overall, a real gem on Route 66

A lovely Inn where we spent two nights. Rooms clean, comfortable and dressed with artifacts facing a courtyard which had seats , fountain and was lushly green and shady.A unique spa pool just round the corner which had all the charm of Mexico seating, adobe style fire colourful tiles.Breakfast rooms were spacious and the staff on hand offering fresh tortillas, apples etc.Play area for those who have children and all outside areas perfectly painted and maintained.Local bus stop just outside drive 2dollars return into plaza centre 1 dollar if over 60.

The grounds are beautiful and our room was apartment-sized. The employees were very helpful and friendly -- more like what you get at an expensive hotel. We stayed during a Route 66 trip, so we were looking for vintage places. The bathroom was original (art deco maybe?), but super clean. Our room had two beds which were very comfortable. The layout of the room was pretty unique. The bedroom part was separate from the sink/vanity, which was separate from a dressing room/closet area, which was separate from the shower/toilet area (which also had another sink). It would've been easy for several people to use at once. While I'm sure you can find things to complain about due to the age of the inn, I wouldn't let that detract you from staying there. There is no doubt this place is a great value -- lots of amenities I would expect from a fancy hotel. Will stay there again -- great way to see Santa Fe! (If you're thinking of staying here, I'd call ahead -- the rooms all filled up fairly early the night we were there).
