5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2010

We stayed with our two kids ages 8 and 10. All of us had a great time. The pool is fabulous, great temperature and big enough for kids and adults to enjoy together. The grounds are well manicured and there are lots of places to spaces to retreat to and enjoy a book or just relax.

The rooms are clean and comfortable and it's close to downtown. We'll be staying here again!

This place looked like a regular freeway hotel at the beginning but it grows on you.
The pool was small but clean. The hot tub was in a cozy little corner. Breakfast was decent (on the better side of decent).
The place just has charm, it is easy to get to downtown. I even bought a mug and it brings back nice memories.
The rooms are old but clean.

I went for the first time to Santa Fe, NM this past Monday. My mother had come to stay here with her late husband who was fighting cancer about a year and a half ago. It was in the dead of winter with snow on the ground and they were weary from travels. Back then she remembered how friendly the staff was, and the breakfast buffet was quite tasty. When we decided to return to visit family, El Ray Inn was the only choice for us. From first glance, I was enchanted. The architechture sends you back to a time when you took your time to relax and enjoy. The spa is fantastic, I was there every evening of my stay. The staff is very helpful and they have a PC available in the lobby for guests to access the internet. A book library for the guests is another great amenity. In short.. you NEED to come visit the El Ray Inn. You will destress and never want to leave!

We stayed at the El Rey for a couple of nights in June on a long weekend trip to Santa Fe. The hotel was fine, the front desk and staff were friendly enough but the people staying at the hotel were absolutely horrid! The hotel does not accept pets but my husband has a medical condition that requires that he rest frequently and have a medical service dog. The hotel was ok with our well trained and quiet dog who had the proper identification and who was identified with a service dog vest. We asked for a quiet room in the back. The hotel is not set up for privacy so all the doors face out to a courtyard. There was a large group staying near us and the noise went on well into the night with kids screaming, people calling to each other across the courtyard and general disregard for others staying at the hotel. One night, they decided to take flash pictures of each other outside our window and the flashing went on for about an hour so. We could see if even with the curtains drawn tight. The next afternoon, some of our fellow guests parked themselves outside between their door and our door and carried on a long and loud conversation disrupting my husband's nap. No rest for us either at night or in the afternoon. Later, as we were leaving for dinner, these same people, whom we had never met or had any interaction with outside of putting up with their noise, made a loud comment about how some people get a service vest for their dog just so they could go wherever they wanted. Short of explaining to this moron what my husband's medical condition was and why we needed the dog, there was no answer to this aggressive, unbelievably rude and insensitive comment. We'd put up with these obnoxious and noisy people for most of our stay but this comment was the last straw. We checked out first thing the next morning, a day early, and the front desk neither asked about our stay nor seemed to care. We moved to a hotel closer to town whose rates were only slightly higher but which was heads and shoulders above the El Rey in class and friendlines . Is it the hotel's fault that the people who stay there are noisy, clueless, ignorant morons? Not technically. However, there seemed to be a large number of them there during our stay and the type of people with whom you will share a facility is certainly a consideration when choosing to hotel. We would not recommend this one especially if you have a service dog or want a quiet night's sleep.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at El Rey Inn. We always appreciate feedback from our guests and strive to make each guest's stay comfortable and enjoyable. Allow us to apologize for the discomfort that you experienced on your last visit to Santa Fe. El Rey Inn has a strict policy against noise and partying on our property. We work very hard to keep the environment relaxing and peaceful for everyone. That being said, we are not always able to prevent such incidents from beginning, but are always able to put a stop to them right away when informed of the occurrence. Had we been informed of your distress, we certainly would have responded right away in order to right the situation. We make every effort to accommodate our guests, but do rely on them to inform us of their needs. The objectionable comment made about your service animal by another guest is in no way reflective of El Rey Inn’s viewpoint. Nevertheless we would like to express our regrets for the guest's behavior. And we do hope that you will try us again in the future.

The El Rey Inn is THE BEST place to stay in Santa Fe - bar none. Beautiful gardens, friendly staff, lovely accommodations, thoughtful decor and a yummy breakfast. We've tried them all - visiting Santa Fe year after year - and this year we finally left the plaza - listened to friends - and booked at the El Rey. Not only does it offer excellent value - but the owners seem to genuinely care abot their guests - very refreshing. We receoomend this place without reservation - but suggest you make reservations - since we are not the only people on the planet who have fallen in love with this place.

It's not often that every guidebook recommends the same place, but I can see why they do the El Rey for Santa Fe. That plus the rave reviews here on TA convinced us to stay and we are very glad we did. The drive down Cerrillos road from i-25 is dismal but the El Rey complex was simply gorgeous with all the roses in full bloom. For once we could literally smell the flowers. Ravens everywhere added an exotic touch for us.
The neighborhood is fine, in fact just two doors down the street on the same side is a thrift shop where we bought a designer denim jacket for $4. Even though we booked on Expedia instead of directly with El Rey, they gave us a very nice room off the courtyard with a fountain and benches. It's a straight shot down to the plaza and very easy drive.
The breakfast staff is cheery and the ambience great. The pool was indeed very popular but we preferred to sit outside the room and read and watch the ravens splash in the fountains Parking was easy and plentiful and free. A very good bargain,

I chose to book this hotel because of the TA reviews. I'm so glad I did. The Inn is a motel style complex set in a large landscaped garden full of beautiful birds and trees. There is an excellent swimming pool - a decent size, though the shallow end could be larger. It has as many loungers as is possible and a terrific hot tub (there is a second tub but I never used it). We used the pool all 4 days of our stay (after not having used any pool in our previous 7 hotels/motels on this trip).
Rooms were decently sized and pleasantly appointed with very comfy mattresses, and with great soap in the bathrooms. Breakfast was in a lovely hacienda style room with lovely Spanish guitar music in the background. The two members of staff in the breakfast room are lovely and come round with little bowls of cut fruit. The coffee (even the sachets in the room) had real flavour unlike most motels.
The motel is 2 miles from the centre on the Cerillos Road but the Bus Number 2 stops outside regularly - but the last back is at 9.30pm. Worth checking out their internet deals too. A real destination motel/inn at a modest price for what it is. We are so happy that we stayed there.
