“Wonderful Surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2011

It was a surprise because we had not planned to stay in Santa Fe when we passed through, but it was late and raining. The hotels downtown were all full due to some convention, so we spotted the El Ray from the street. How charming and friendly! Caretakers could not have been nicer, pointing out a great diner in walking distance and finding us a sweet room that we could park our bike in front of. Loved the skylight in the bathroom! Lots of throw-back touches for a comfortable stay. Hope we can return sometime. What a great break from a box motel!

Room Tip: These are not cookie-cutter rooms. Talk about it.

My wife and I stayed here on our Route 66 honeymoon trip. Very good rates compared to the rest of Santa Fe. Great grounds too. The complimentary breakfast is excellent too. Clean room. Great historic Hotel

I have stayed at the El Rey numerous times, and frankly, will stay there again! It's a little funky, for sure, but I like that. Feels like you are in a bit of a time warp in most areas of the property. Rooms range from older and dingy to updated and modern, with a lot in between. Many have fireplaces, although now they are all gas fireplaces. Here's what makes it great: staff is very nice and helpful; the big "living room" is homey, cozy and wonderful, with books, nooks, magazines aplenty and roaring fires going, when chilly. The breakfast is bountiful and included. The pool is lovely as are the two hot-tubs-- one outdoor and one indoor. I've had spacious, immaculate rooms and I've had very dingy rooms with old wood paneling and beds & bedding that seemed to be from the 1950s.

Room Tip: The suites are really top-notch and cozy.

We had a good stay in the El Rey Inn: Our room was a basic 2 queen room, but the gardens and pool are really very nice. Breakfast was a bit of a disappointment, not much choice, and quite a cramped seating. But we would surely come back!

This property is a lot larger than I had envisioned, and I would like to have seen one of the more expensive rooms. We got the basic room and it was nice. The gardens and atmosphere as a whole is reminiscent of old Mexico. We took the bus to the square- there is a stop in front of the motel. If I had it to do over again, I would have driven to the square as there appeared to be plenty of parking. Breakfast was good, also.

I've stayed on the Plaza many times, but this family trip called for a little different hotel. El Rey is probably the best value in town. It offers an array of rooms, and if you call the main desk, they'll help you figure out which arrangement will work best for you. Good beds and nice breakfast provided on property. The pool looked great. The location (if you don't mind driving into town) is quite good. Now, if you're looking for nightlife, this isn't the place for you. But if you want a base from which to explore the area, El Rey Inn will definitely fill the bill.

The room was with a low seiling but big and with a bench.
The bathroom was a bit narrow and the fixed showerhead was so low it reached towards my chin (and I'm not tall at all). In the blankets were several holes up to 1 inch wide.
Sitting at the porch was not enjoyable because of the loud airco of the the neighbours. That's a pitty.
The breakfast was fine with a perfect service and a nice surrounding.
The reception (checking in and out ) was almost rude and not friendly..
Also the garden and patios can use some clean up.
