“5 star experience all the way”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2011

Wife and I stayed for 3 nights in late October. On past trips to Santa Fe we've stayed close to the plaza, this time we decided to try something different and were glad that we did. The rooms (Casitas) at the Encantado are large and luxurious. Comfortable, with enough space to relax in the room and read. We enjoyed the amenities like free K-cup coffee and wi-fi that worked very well. The wood burning Kiva is a great feature too. The staff was welcoming and very attentive. Another great feature was the large gym and spa. My only minor gripe is that with the out of town location you are captive to their food which is very expensive (but excellent.) $28 a person for in room breakfast is a bit over the top. We thought the base Casita was the best option, the "view" Casitas are just the 2nd story so I can't imagine the view being all that superior. Bottom line is we enjoyed the Encantado and will stay here again on our next trip to Santa Fe.

Room Tip: #55 is a bottom floor Casita with no room above.

This resort was supposed to have the best views in Santa Fe, but instead the views are of parking lots and fences. Prices are crazy for what you get. Instead, rent a place across the street at Pueblo Encantado--you will get better views and much more for your money--then you can walk over and enjoy the resort's restaurant, bar and spa.

encantado is a beautiful hotel! casita had everything we could want and more, but i did not like the mushy down pillows. maybe i should've asked if they had different ones. the casita was a suite (#64). no one above or below us, but did hear the people in the casita next door ... slammed doors late at night. nothing to rally complain about with the room, it was really comfortable and had beautiful views. as it turns out, i really didn't like being so far away from the center of town. the drivers were always at the ready to drive us anywhere, but it would have been nice to just walk out the front door and enjoy more of santa fe.
i would stay again, but knowing that it's a 15 min drive to town and take into consideration the elevation of the whole area!
p.s. dinner at terra was excellent!

I have never felt compelled to review a hotel/resort before, but after three sleepless nights at Encantado I wish I had been warned! Our room was lovely and spacious with a beautiful bathroom and plenty of closet space. BUT, we could hear EVERY step the occupants above us took. They were up at 6:30am and didn't go to bed until 12:30am. Honestly? What were the resort planners thinking during construction? It was insane. I just read a review that stated a woman ran out of a lower unit, as guests were being shown to the room above, screaming for them to take off their shoes because she couldn't stand the noise. I had to laugh - that was almost me!!

Dinner at Terra was delicious. The best meal of my trip. The workout room was very nice. I did not take advantage of the spa services as I treat myself while at home on a regular basis and prefer to take in the local scenery on trips rather than face down on a massage table.

Quite by accident I found miles of trails connected to the resort that the resort staff don't tell you about - even if asked. I had two lovely (and challenging) runs on these trails.

Upon checking out, I complained about the noise level. The staff is very aware of it, as I am certain they receive complaints about it regularly. I was told that because I booked online (and got a pretty good rate) they couldn't do anything about it. I also got the impression that because I got a pretty good deal, I was put in a less than ideal location on the property.

Would I go back to Encantado? No, probably not. On my next trip I'll stay in Santa Fe proper.

Room Tip: Be sure to get a room without another room above

We spent a wonderful few days at Encantado in October, 2010. Although I am just now getting around to writing a review, I can still remember the wonderful feeling of the crisp air at that time of year, the beautiful casita, and the fantastic service.

Although about 15 minutes out of the downtown Santa Fe area, this was an amazing place to stay in the area and I would definitely return. The casita was beautifully decorated and so cozy. We made use of the fireplace every night, ordered breakfast to the room, and loved the spa bathroom. The heated floor in the bathroom is a wonderful touch. Turndown service was great. Luxury service as advertised, and met all expectations.

We also took advantage of the hotel's offer of the Mercedes convertible for the day, although we had rented our own car for the time we were there. Skeptical at first, we were so happy we did this, as the car was beautiful and we had a nice time touring in it for the day.

I have stayed at other places in Santa Fe, but Encantado is truly a find, and we are looking forward to staying there again.

We had a lovely stay at this beautiful property. The service, the food, the spa, the comfort of the room furnishings were all outstanding. BUT, if you are planning to go, be sure to get a room on the second floor. We were on the first floor and could hear EVERY step of our upstairs neighbors, along with the sound of their voices. At these prices, one expects quiet. I'm amazed that they did not soundproof between floors when they constructed this resort.

Encantado was exceptional. We really enjoyed it!

Rooms

Rooms are "casitas" and are large comfortable accommodations. We paid for an upgrade to a large 1,100 square foot suite (rate was around $850 per night). The suite had a nice entry area with a mini-bar, fridge, coffee making bar followed by a guest powder room and a nice sized living room featuring a fireplace and excellent desert views.

The large terrace also featured an outdoor fireplace, table and two chaise lounges.

The master bathroom was enormous with a perfectly sized large deep soaking tub - a real luxury and increasingly hard to find in hotels today.

A previous reviewer described the decor as "Pottery Barn". Well, I would prefer to describe it as "Modern Southwestern". Restrained in a casually elegant and classy way. Was it stunning decor? No definitely not. But it was comfortable and well thought out; visually subtle and soothing.

The suite was very nice and in line with what you would expect from a 5 Star resort.

Pool Area / Gym / Spa

The weather was too cool to use the pool area in early October but it was large and looked great! A huge factor to take into consideration if you're visiting Santa Fe in the summer.

The gym was small and basic. We didn't have a chance to use the spa.

Terra - Dining

Breakfast was fine - nothing exceptional. Dinner was excellent with a well designed menu, delicious food and an excellent waiter.

Service

Service varied from below average for a 5 Star hotel to exceptional. The Concierge, Jody Neff, was exceptional. She is the epitome of a Clefs d’Or Concierge – knowledgeable, passionate about the destination and very well connected. Her hospitality was the highlight of our hotel experience!

When a couple of service issues did arise the hotel staff quickly resolved the issues and more than made up for the inconveniences we experienced. It was obvious that the management and staff of Encantado take service very seriously. Mistakes occur and when management takes immediate action to correct a mistake I immediately "forgive and forget" and move on. Good service is based upon a service oriented culture and attitude and Encantado staff have this in spades. If you travel a lot you can recognize this immediately.

Overall

Encantado is a 4 ½ star property eager to become a 5 Star. What’s lacking? That special polish or dusting of magic that transforms a very good resort into a memorable and exceptional resort. In the case of Encantado the design of the resort is a bit of a disappointment. Namely the unsightly parking lots snaking through the resort are a huge landscape design mistake. Hopefully someday in the future the resort owners can corral the parking into one hidden area of the resort and transform the parking lots into walking trails / golf buggy trails leading to the casitas and suites. This one change, while drastic, would immeasurably improve the resort. The parking lots are too motel like and don’t belong in the heart of a 5 star property.

Also the entrance from the highway is discrete. Perhaps too discrete as it doesn’t provide a sense of arrival at a special destination.

Service is good but housekeeping in particular needs a bit of improvement. The addition of Butler service upon arrival and throughout the stay would be a nice service addition to this property.

Overall it’s the best option for those who are willing to spend on a luxury experience and enjoy a location a few minutes outside of the center of Santa Fe. If you are accustomed to Four Seasons and Ritz Carlton type of guest experiences then Encantado is your best option.

If you’re searching for a very unique property with a lot of exceptional décor and atmosphere located in the center of Santa Fe then I recommend the highly unique Inn of the Five Graces which we had the pleasure of touring.

Room Tip: Second floor casitas for the views and suites / casitas on the highest ridge offer the best views...
