“Interesting Stop on the island”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

Interesting info concerning the Pig War. Nicely kept camp with nice walking trails down to the water. Of course, the English gardens were landscaped with boxwood. We followed the trail to the cemetery that was about a mile up the hill, across the road and a service road, only a few stones there because there were so few deaths during those 12 years. We also passed quite a few interesting trees with red peeling bark the way up . Pacific Madronas.

“Well worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

This is a good chance to learn about the Pig War between the US and the British. There is adequate parking for vehicles. It is just a short walk downhill to the visitor center which was open the day we were there. There are walking trails in the area. Pit toilets are available.

“Side Trip”

We learned more about the "pig" war, when the English and American troops on San Juan Island nearly went to war over the killing of a pig. Luckily, cooler heads prevailed and blood shed was avoided. The argument was arbitrated by a German General San Juan Island was given to the United States!

“Learn about the Pig War!”

Beautiful setting and excellent visitors center - Not to mention a view of nesting ospreys! Forgotten piece of history that turned out well for the US!

“Very cool spot, worth a quick visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2013

A few buildings are preserved although nothing was open on the day we went. You can still see the small, formal garden and walk around the property. It's easy to imagine what kind of life they must have had here. It's worth a walk up the hill to the cemetery and the top of Young Mountain for some great views.
