My husband and I flew to San Juan Island with Westwind Aviation and did the Western Prince Whale Watching Tour -- a package deal (by far this was the best day of our West Coast vacation). We found out about the package from the Western Prince website and called the cell number. I believe they are going to create a link which in the future will take you directly to Westwind Aviation from Western Prince. We stumbled upon this method of travel by accident -- we wanted a zodiac whale watching tour and we found 2 tour companies that provided this -- one Victoria and one in San Juan Island. Well, the clipper to Victoria was booked so our decision was easy! I am so glad we ended up flying -- you get awesome views the whole time and you save about 5 hours round trip on your day -- 3 hour boat ride versus 40 min flight.
Our day began with meeting our easy-going pilot, Jim, at the airfield. A very nice guy whom we felt instantly at ease with. We then flew in a cessna (only 2 passengers but they have capability of twin engine plane for up to 5 passengers) and had a beautiful 40min flight and took many pictures of our scenic flight over Seattle (who needs the space needle?! :) ). We then landed uneventfully on San Juan Island. Loren met us and drove us to the whale watch.
The Zodiac tour was fantastic -- see review of Western Prince Whale Watch.
After the tour we asked for an hour in downtown Friday Harbor/San Juan to grab a quick bite -- reportedly there is a great restaurant (Duck Soup) about 4 miles from where we were but we elected to stay near the downtown. We grabbed some regular fish and chips and then Loren came to pick us up and take us back to the airport. Alan was our pilot back and he was great, fun stories and some good recommendations about Seattle.
Lovely, lovely, lovely. I hope others can enjoy this adventure and hopefully also get to see amazing whales.
