Owner description: San Juan Classic Day Sailing offers 2 hour Day Sails, Half Day Private Charters, Sun Set Sails and Sailing Lessons out of Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, Wa. aboard beautiful classic, fully restored wooden sailing ships. We sail through some of the most beautiful and pristine waters in the world, offering guests a chance to participate hands on the the sailing of the vessel or the opportunity to just sit back and relax and enjoy the ride. Along with spectacular natural scenery, the San Juan Islands are home to many species of marine wildlife, including porpoise, seals and sea lions, many types of water birds and the magnificent Orca Whales. We feel that seeing these animals from the deck of a sailboat, silently gliding through the water, is one of the most environmentally sound and respectful ways of viewing them in their natural habitat. We welcome you to join us! In addition to sailing, scenery and wildlife, we offer local wine and hors de oeuvres on most of our sails for a truly unique and exclusive experience.

“Lovely afternoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2014

We had a lovely afternoon sailing out of Friday Harbor. The wind was light and our skipper very knowledgeable - he even allowed children to safely "captain the boat" for a few minutes. The vistas are so beautiful and the weather clear and cool - it was a very charming two hour outing.

“A Delightful Afternoon Sailing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2013

We had a wonderful day sail on the Iris with Captain Art and First Mate Frank who came along to assist. Captain Art filled our ears with sailing terms and explanations as he prepared the lovely craft Iris for our journey, and he continued throughout the trip to explain the nuances of handling the three sails with variations in wind and our position. Fascinating! He even let us try our hand at the helm, under his watchful eye. Frank assisted the Captain as needed, talked with us, and on request he even took some excellent pictures of us enjoying our sailing trip. We highly recommend this crew and craft for a delightful experience.

“A picture perfect day of sailing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

Holidaying from Australia, we had read much about the San Juan Islands and were keen to spend a day of our vacation sailing around them. Not being a sailor, we found the notion of sailing in an classic old schooner very appealing and great way for the kids to pick up a few pointers on the art of sailing. With this criteria in mind, we quickly settled on San Juan Classic Day Sailing and the beautiful “Dirigo II”.

To say our day was picture perfect is an understatement. Art and his family were the perfect hosts – not only were we well looked after and well feed, but we thoroughly enjoyed just sitting, relaxing and having a wonderful conversation. The kids (9,6) had a wonderful time and Art was the perfect teacher – patient and with lots of knowledge which he was very gracious in sharing.

The sailing itself was just beautiful. There is always something to see and marvel over – on our trip we not only got to take an up close look at some of the beautiful islands (the Dirigo II has a zodiac which can get you into any cove or small island), but we joined by many seals and propoises.

This was a day that my family and I will never forget. I cannot recommend San Juan Classic Day Sailing enough !!!!

“An amazing sailing experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

We, literally, just got off the boat. I am writing this after experiencing sailing for the first time. "Iris," the historic sailboat with an ambiance of her own, as well as our captain, Art, provided us with a truly memorable experience. I had never been sailing before. But, I quickly found myself in awe of the 1930's sailboat and Art's skill at navigating the waters. It was serene, inspiring, and poetry in motion! If you are looking for an experience that compliments your San Juan visit perfectly, this is it. Be inspired and contact Art to enjoy sailing. He, and his boats, are not to be missed!

“Do it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2011

We did the circumnavigation of San Juan on the Dirigo and it was fabulous. Overnighted on the boat (comfortable), dinner at a restaurant in Roche Harbor (more a cultural than a culinary experience), saw Minke whales and porpoises, and sailed whenever there was wind. The yacht is magnificently restored and maintained. Owner and skipper Art has an inexhaustible store of sea tales.
