This hotel exceeded our expectations. It was quiet and relaxing. The staff provides good service also and cookies in the afternoon. The rooms were furnished well. Enjoyed the breakfast and relaxing on the porch upstairs.

I should have known there would be trouble when the hotel thoughtfully provided earplugs next to the bed the first night. The bar down the street kept me up and the earplugs only partially helped. I was painfully aware of the smokers outside the bar from 10pm onward, the bar shut-down time at 2am (which led to shouting and yelling from some unhappy customers), and also the trash pickup promptly at 7am the next morning. Yes, you can hear the noise through closed windows. The hotel was lovely otherwise, and the room was beautiful. But unforunately one of the most important things one wants in a vacation - rest - was not to be had. When I mentioned it at checkout, the clerk just sighed sympathetically. I guess I didn't complain loud enough, but I had had enough noise for a weekend.

We had an unusual request... 3 adults in one room. This was not a problem. An extra bed was quickley added. The room was clean with all the necessities; plus, microwave & frig. The location was two blocks from where everything happens. Breakfast was better than the usual: Elena brought out plenty of perfect fruit, cereal, toast, jelly & boiled eggs. Maya was my first conntact. I wanted to be there just to meet her. Debbe chatted with furver; she gave us a sample of her local recipe for fish... the best I had.
San Juan is a picture post card and an ecological statement. It's a great place to relax, eat, learn and just sit and watch the day go by.

Excellent experience. 1st class hotel. 1st class service. Excellent location right by the harbor, restaurants, shops etc. Parking very easy. Very reasonable pricing for quality of room, location and services provided. Outstanding follow up post trip with help and support provided by Bird Rock staff in sending home clothes left in our room. Special thanks to Bird Rock staffer Debbie for going above and beyond the call to assist us with that. Would highly recommend this to anyone interested in a very affordable and high quality stay in San Juan Island by Friday Harbor.

Stayed at the BirdRock Hotel with my spouse and another couple. We stayed in the Bainbridge Suite, a lovely and spacious 2 bedroom suite on the main floor of the hotel. The bathroom is large and has a jetted tub, there is a kitchenette, and large living room area. We went next door to the grocery store to stock our fridge with snacks and drinks which was a nice convenience. As some earlier reviews mention, the hotel is also across the street from a tavern so there can be quite a bit of noise at night during the weekend but the hotel provides earplugs if necessary and in all honesty, what do you expect when staying in the center of a bustling port town?
Deb at the front desk was super friendly and helpful with tips on where to eat and even helped us book our whale watching tour (Western Prince, highly recommended!). The hotel has loaner one speed bikes which we took to the local winery, about a 3 mile one way trip. Quite an adventure!
The breakfast is fresh and delightful with the famous scones, fruit plate, hard boiled eggs, and toast with delicious jam.
Only one negative part to talk about and that was the lady at the front desk in the morning (not Deb), she was rather unpleasant, never smiled, and generally just looked like she did not want to be there. She was like a zombie walking around replenishing the breakfast but never smiling or asking how your stay was. However, this is not nearly enough to ruin a wonderful weekend in the San Juans. Definitley plan to get to the ferry in Anacortes at least 1.5 hours before departure or you take a chance of missing it. We got there 45 minutes before the 11:05am sailing on a Friday and it was already full. We had to wait 4 hours for the next boat.
The hotel, the loaner bikes, the friendliness of Deb, and the cozy and clean rooms make me want to go back next weekend for another stay on the island.

My husband and I stayed here with his sister and her 2 kids. We stayed in the Salt Spring suite - great room, nice little patio, and even though it was right off the sidewalk, it was quiet and relaxing. Although the space will accommodate 4 (there's a "bedroom" and a living/dining area w/sofa bed), the bedroom is separated from the living area only by a half wall and a doorless opening. It doesn't provide any privacy. But it's a very comfortable suite for 2. Staff were pleasant, there was a nice continental breakfast, cookies & lemonade in the afternoon, and you can't beat the location. If they offered complimentary wine & canapes before dinner, I'd say the place was perfect.
