“Don't bother staying here!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

This historic hotel is awful. Badly in need of a redo... Terrible bathrooms, can here everything in the next room. Just awful! Stay at the Marriott or Hyatt where you will have much better rooms!

Waited long to get our car too!
Save your money!

This historic landmark hotel boasts the oldest saloon in Texas. Stroll across its original hardwood floor and prop yourself at the bar for a history lesson from the knowledgeable staff. Rooms are reasonably priced for being next to the Alamo and so close to the Riverwalk. Rooms differ in decor and size. Traveling solo I prefer the tiny rooms with Empire beds (complete with steps to facillitate getting onto the bed) and tiny bathrooms. Why? Two reasons: as a business road warrior I prefer period rooms with a sense of history..and in these rooms the windows actually open so you can hear the morning birds in the Alamo trees. And these rooms have a view into the courtyard of the Alamo. My son recently honeymooned here and they selected a very large suite in a newer addition to the original hotel...they were delighted with their suite. The restaurant is in the newer part of the hotel and lacks coziness so didn't flip my trigger. I am a repeat offender at this "small" hotel.

Room Tip: If you don't need a large room, ask for a room in the original part of the hotel that overlooks...

The location of the hotel is perfect! We had requested to stay in the original part of the hotel. Our room had plenty of room especially considering we were not going to be in it that much. We did have a small flat screen t.v. and an actual closet. The bathroom was small but perfect! It's exactly what I would expect in an older room. It was definitely warm and muggy out but our AC worked so well that most the time I was pretty cold while in the room. Our room was on the inside, so we had a great view of the pool area and also, it was pretty quiet, we couldn't hear any traffic. The staff at the Menger is fantastic! All were pleasant and more than happy to answer our questions. The entire place has so much character and history, we completely enjoyed it and it exceeded our expectations. The beds? Well, at first I didn't think it was that comfortable, however, my husband and I slept like babies and woke up refreshed. So I would say, just give it a chance, you may be proved wrong like we were. The valet parking? Well, it's the same as any other city hotel. I'm not sure why people are complaining about that, it's pretty customary. We didn't encounter any ghosts, nor anything weird at all. We've been to San Antonio a few times and I know we will stay there again!

Room Tip: We were in room 4007, kind of a long walk, 3/4 away from the elevators and right next to the creaky...

I have stayed here many years ago for a similar reunion, so I had memories and a good idea of what to expect. We were lucky to get a large suite at an excellent rate that met our needs extremely well. We needed a refrigerator and some extra chairs to host guests and the hotel immediately filled our needs. All aspects of our 3 day stay were perfect. It was nice to be back!

The Menger Hotel is a historic hotel property, one of the oldest in San Antonio. The staff bends over backwards to make everything OK. It is old so don't expect a slick "plastic" room. For the price in downtown SA, the rooms are bargains as well as charming. The lobby is beautiful and the courtyard always well groomed, with seasonal flowers and a lovely fountain and rocking chairs. The lovely dining room has a wonderful breakfast buffet (not complimentary) with almost any breakfast food one could want. There are displays of historic artifacts and a gorgeous holiday tree in one of the lovely public rooms. Don't complain about shower heads, etc; this is a place to enjoy for its age and its history. There is a lady ghost, but we have never had the privilege of encountering her....well once there was a rocking chair rocking all by itself when the others were still....so maybe...

Room Tip: rooms on the Alamo side are quieter during holiday evenings. View of the carriages.

I stayed here out of sheer curiosity and found that the rooms were quaint. (That means small and cozy). There is a smell of must or old nursing home on the elevator side of the hotel, I can't place it. My room was clean and the staff were a bit stiff. Sometimes large city hotels that charge a lot think being too serious and dry at the front desk is professionalism, but it's not. I tied the room service, but it was not that good. limited selection and overpriced. (Again the San Antonio tourist thing). I love history and the bar was definitely historic. the bar tender was friendly. I did not meet any ghosts here, but I would have, I would have asked them to help with the bill since they stay there too.

the staff was always friendly and helpful. the house keepers are excellent in what they do the
room was always cleaned and spotless besides friendly and helpful that's the main thing is to
have a clean room while you are here. the restraint was a little on the high side. but then
don't be put in room 2044 the old section the room smelled musty and to get into the bathroom
you had to step up 2 or 3 inches just to get to the bathroom. also I wanted a prime rib dinner
went down twice hour ater the opened and they had no prime rib. if you have something on
the menu you should have it besides that I had a good time and was impressed by it I it has
a lot of interesting history about the hotel

Room Tip: the further up you go less noise
