“Great Hotel with a small warning!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2004

The Menger Hotel is the epitome of Texas History and is absolutely rich in history and content. It is breathtaking just to walk through and witness the past as it comes alive. However, be aware that there are two different sections; one being a "newer" addition. The older rooms are more enriched with the atmosphere, but lack the insulation and updates. Also, if you think you are getting a "good deal" on the price, be aware that you will probably be placed in one of the smaller rooms which may be all but hidden from any view. The one thing we did find out is that if you complain about your room, you may be relocated and sometimes it is worth the trouble. We received a tiny, miseable room with no view and when we complained, we were actually given one of the original suites that overlook Alamo Plaza! What a treat to go from bad to the best! No matter; the Menger is a part of San Antonio history that should never be missed. And don't overlook the bar! Teddy Roosevelt drank there and some say he's still around.

Okay, I admit it, I love older hotels like the Menger. Sometimes the plumbing isn't quite right, or there aren't enough electrical outlets, but they have an ambience and character that can't be beat. The Menger is a beautiful historic hotel and my room was great. High ceilings, nice crown molding, and the plumbing and electrical worked just fine!
Really enjoyed my four day stay in San Antonio, and staying at the Menger was icing on the cake. Next time I'll take my family.

Our stay at the Menger Hotel was great. The Hotel is close to the shops, entertainment, Riverwalk, and the history reflected in the building is spooky in a good way. It is an older hotel but is well kept. Also if you don't want to pay the daily valet parking there is cheaper parking right next door. The only problem we encountered is that when I attemp to make a reservation for the weekend I wait too long and its booked.

Beautiful old hotel with a great lobby, garden area, and pool. The location couldn't be better next to the Alamo (and carriage rides!) and just a short walk to the hustle and bustle of the Riverwalk. Rooms were small (hey, it's an old hotel) but well furnished and nicely decorated.
The food in the dining room was excellent and everyone should have a drink in the Menger Bar (1859). We will recommend this hotel to all of our friends.

After making reservations I was reading the reviews of the Menger Hotel, I was was having second thoughts about canceling them. Was I glad we went ahead it was everything I expected it to be and more. If you are going and expecting Ice machines, vending machines, and a video arcade on every floor this is NOT the place. If you are expecting to step back in time and spend some time in an exceptionally nice restored hotel then the Menger is the one place to stay. Everything we wanted to see or do was convenient to the hotel, Riverwalk across the Alamo Plaza, RiverCenter around the corner up Blum Alley, Alamo next door, Trolley tours, tourist info center, city buses, all this within easy walking distance, we spent three nites and if we ever return to San Antonio you can bet the Menger will be at the top of the list. Really had a great time and would recomend the Menger to anyone

I just returned from a 5 night stay at The Menger and had a wonderful time. After reading some earlier reviews, I was expecting much worse!.
I requested a room in the older section, and found my room comfortable, quite large, clean, and it had a terrific balcony overlooking the Alamo Square. The staff was professional, my room always cleaned when requested and the food at the restaurant was great. Who needs a coffee machine when they have fresh made downstairs? If you want bland cookie-cutter rooms, go elsewhere. For character and charm, you cannot do better. I will definately return.

Just returned (Oct. 2003) from 4 days at this historic hotel. Yes, the history is fascinating (built in 1859), but the rooms are mediocre and the service is below average. We needed two bathrooms in our suite (5 women) and were told upon making the reservation in February that there were two in the "family suite". Upon arrival and check-in, we were informed by a less-than-friendly front desk woman that the "family suite" had only one bathroom and would only sleep 3. Huh? After spending an HOUR at the front desk trying to get accomodations to sleep 5, we ended up taking two adjoining rooms for the first two nights, then moving to the "family suite" for the third night and squeezing in two rollaways. SURPRISE!! The "family suite" not only had TWO BATHROOMS in it, it also had a small kitchenette AND a large balcony! Obviously, the front desk incompetence was infuriating at this point. This suite would have been a better option for us from the beginning; had she given us the correct information about the bathrooms. None of the employees in this entire establishment were friendly or helpful (I take that back; one housekeeper we encountered was very nice. She had to come at 11:00 p.m. to put clean linens on the sleeper sofa bed - they were visibly dirty!!). Customer service is where it's at; and The Menger Hotel is lacking terribly. By the way, the rooms were less than average. Beds slept well, but bathrooms were inadequate and the furniture pretty worn out. Lesson learned: book your room at the nicer, NEW hotels and stop by The Menger Hotel to tour the historic lobby.
