“Older Property, Great Location, Too Expensive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

Just spent a week at the Hyatt River Walk for a convention, and the service was phenomenal. River Walk runs right next to the hotel, which is a block from the Alamo. Great location!

I have mixed feelings, however, about the value offered. The property seems older, and the rooms aren't up to the size or standards of a regular Hampton Inn or Comfort Inn and Suites, but they cost much, much more. Our discounted convention rate was $169, which is still far too much for what is offered. There's no continental breakfast, you have to pay $10 a day for internet or go down to the lobby for free wifi (service is good), and while there is a small dorm fridge in the room, there's no microwave. Also, the walls are rather thin; it seems that you can hear too much of what is going on around you.

For people who just like to party, I suppose you could overlook everything and appreciate being right on River Walk. Honestly, River Walk is very, very cool. But there are lots of panhandlers downtown, even during the day, and large groups of hip-hop youths seem to come out at night and gather on corners. There is a good police presence, but still....

I'd definitely go back to soak up the history (you definitely want to see the Alamo and do the mission tour) and experience more of River Walk, but I'd stay outside of downtown -- pay less, get more, and put the savings toward a rental car so you can have more independence and see more on your own.

We recently stayed here for a convention, and the location could not have been better. Right out one door to the Riverwalk, right out another door to beautiful fountains and gardens leading to the Alamo. Our view of the Alamo and the Tower of the Americas was wonderful!

I recommend a room on a higher floor, on the Alamo side. (Our room, 1050, was perfect.) On the downside, the staff at the Q bar, while friendly and polite, were overwhelmed. The hotel needs to staff up.

We just got here for our honeymoon to have horrible experience. The rooms are not worth the price! You cam hear everything outside the room. Firm beds. Very basic. Our "river view" is really sad. Im looking at the street...and a little river. Go somewhere else.

In town for a conference at the convention center. Stayed several days at this location. Great location, right on the river walk.

Accommodations were fine. Clean room, comfortable bed, well appointed. My room was noisy, it was an adjoining room, and the guests next door were seemingly talking at normal levels and I could hear just about everything.

Overall, the service was poor. The staff as a whole seemed exhausted, frankly. Front Desk and Housekeeping were fine. Servers/Bartenders in the bar were slow, and not friendly. Valet were not great either, seemed understaffed - in fact understaffed seemed to be a recurring theme. After calling down for me car, I ended up waiting over a half hour to get it. Ridiculous.

Internet in my room was poor - I upgraded to the "premium" internet which was frankly unusable. I just used my mobile phone as a hotspot after the first day - much faster.

Servers in the "Q" restaurant were friendly and helpful, and food was good though somewhat expensive (as you might expect from a hotel restaurant).

Very disappointing stay.

I love the Hyatt brand of hotels, they seem to never dissapoint. This trip was for business, and we were able to indulge in many of the hotel amenities as well as the Riverwalk scene during the day and night. Beautiful lobby, fantastic service from check-in, room service, to check out, and the restaurants. This is a great location. I think the room was a bit of a dissapointment, but it provided a nice palce to rest. It's not fancy, at least mine was not, and the hall was a bit noisy, I was on the 3rd floor overlooking lobby. I would stay here again but request a different room.

Room Tip: Do not request a room overlooking the lobby

We were in SA the weekend for the George Strait show. Unfortunately, when I booked our hotel, the Westin was all booked up. We had to Choose the Hyatt on Losoya. We arrived to the Hyatt on Friday. The staff was nice enough. The room was SUB PAR at best. Hair in the shower, funny smell. There was a LOUD dog on our floor who barked most of the early evening (maybe he was lonely for his family). Kids ran up and down the hall screaming. I love kids and dogs, but the walls were so thin it sounded like they were in the room with us. Around 2:15 AM, some drunk guy was on a rant in the hallway. This in turn got the dog riled up. It sounded like people were going into the hall to see what the hell was going on. I called security. I like a few drinks too, but this was a circus. I have no idea if they ever came up or not. About every 2 hours, someone else would be disorderly in the hall yelling (drunks). By 7am, I was livid. I got online, found a room was available at the Westin. I called there to confirm. I spoke to a wonderful helpful lady named Danielle. I explained the situation, that we needed a room. We had to check in at the concert at 3pm, and the Westin's check in is 3pm. Danielle told us to come over right away, they could accomodate us. She was very apologetic about our bad night at the Hyatt. This was ironic, because NO ONE at the Hyatt had been sorry at all. We booked the room, packed our stuff and got to the front desk of the HYATT. I had made sure that we would not get some random fee for leaving early. They assured me they would waive the "Early departure fee". No one ever apologized, asked if they could smooth things over. The best they could do was for us to come down around noon to SEE if they could find a room on another floor. However, she said we might get there at noon, and they would be unable to accomodate a change. "We are very busy due to the concert." At the front desk, The guy who checked me out said "So everything was fine except the little noise last night? I said "It was way more than a little noise. Plus, there was hair in the shower and a funny smell." He NEVER APOLOGIZED FOR EITHER OF THOSE THINGS. NEVER ASKED FOR MORE INFO ABOUT THOSE COMPLAINTS. Then he said "Yes, it is probably better that you are leaving. With the concert tonight, it will be much worse. Maybe next time you come, there will not be a show going on." We left there ASAP, went to the Westin. It was probably about 8-8:30 am at this time. Matt checked us in. He was super friendly, and super accomodating. We briefly told him how we came to be there so early. Again, he was very apologetic for our bad luck. He scanned the roster, and found us a room we could go to right away. As usual, we had a great room. The staff was wonderful. On a side note, there were A LOT of people there at the Westin for the George Strait show. We were not awakened ONCE during the night. The walls must be thicker there or something. Keep up the great work, Westin. We will see you next trip. The Hyatt staff needs to be inserviced in customer service.

Room Tip: Hopefully you are not a light sleeper. THIN WALLS!

We picked this hotel for its location on the Riverwalk and near to the Alamo, and we can't fault it on that basis. However, we expected more from a Hyatt. Basically this place serves a conference crowd and tourists feel like an afterthought.

Service was ok but room had a vague small of mould. Room wasn't cleaned one day despite fact we were out of it from late morning. In room safe was erratic (battery issues?), water in the room cost $6/litre (same bottle was $2.30 in store two minutes walk away), tv cut out twice, in room wifi not free.

No room service past midnight was also a surprise given the opportunities for late night drinking/partying nearby.

Finally...the elevators. Poor lighting made it a challenge to swipe your room card. The doors regularly tried to shut on people. They need serviced! But the worst part was the odd design whereby you had to switch to a different 2-stop elevator to get to the Riverwalk level while the was no stairs as an alternative. It gets tiresome after a while.
