I love San Antonio and visit the city a few times a year. I have never stayed in this hotel but have always admired the architecture and elegance of the foyer. A conference gave me a reason to stay two nights at a very discounted rate. The hotel is in the process of remodeling, and they made this clear at registration and check-in. Hopefully, they retain the historical qualities that make it unique. I booked a king suite and had a very large room on the 9th floor with enough closet space to have slept extra people. I am not kidding - it was a huge walk-in closet! There was a separate hanging closet and a separate closet with drawer space. There were two dressers in the room, and a tall comfortable four poster king bed. The fixtures in the bathroom were period correct and in good working order, and there were sufficient electrical outlets in the room for the electronics. The bathroom had spare toiletries already in place, including toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, etc. The thermostat was old but functional and the room was comfortable temperature-wise. I never heard any construction noise in my room even though there was street work going on in addition to the hotel remodel down the hall. The room doors were very heavy and the walls were thick. The valet was nice and helpful in giving directions to attractions nearby. The front desk staff were also very approachable and made the stay enjoyable through their positive attitudes. Due to the construction, the inside parking garage was closed and parking was off-site across the street on an open lot. This was problematic for our group as one of our female members was followed to her car by a clean-cut casually dressed male. When he saw that we were nearby monitoring him, he moved away from her without causing any problems. This is not an issue with the hotel, but something that anyone staying downtown should be aware of when traveling alone. The hotel was everything I felt a grand old hotel should be. Anyone staying here should not expect to have rooms such as those found in a modern resort, because that is not where you are. This is a fine old hotel with a long history, and is to be appreciated as such. Completion of construction and parking inside the structure will make the experience much better.
Rooms on higher floors appear to have had less road construction and street noise.
