“Fantastic stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2010

Our romantic weekend getaway was made even better by the great hotel staff of the Grand Hyatt! We were greeted warmly in valet and our bellhop Rene was courteous and informative. We headed straight to the rooftop pool, where service was slow and waiter aloof but the crowd and vibe was good and we did our best to liven it up. The next day Geoff was our poolside waiter and despite clouds and a few showers it was another great afternoon. Marla at the front desk and the waitresses in the Rojo bar were all top notch!
There is a Starbucks in the lobby (thank goodness because the coffee in the room was awful) with friendly, helpful staff as well. The concergie (spelling?) was helpful with directions and very friendly.
Upon leaving the hotel we realized our hanging clothes were still in the room. Vince was nice enough to escort my boyfriend back to the room, have a great conversation and offer us a room upgrade on our next visit! Vince - Ryan loves you! Apparently there was some talk among the staff about the pool scene....I'll leave it at that!
The only downside was the hotel "nickles and dimes" you - for example we had to pay for internet which suprised me.
We will definitley be back!

For brevity, I'll just list the pros and cons, and briefly comment on each as needed....

Pros:
-Fairly new hotel

-Large (many rooms)

-Very nice common areas, banquet, and meeting rooms

-Exercise room - huge, and well-equipped - it was basically a full-blown gym like you might find at Bally's, President's, World, or Gold's Gym.

-Services was accomodating with special needs, requests, and circumstances

-Comfortable (but small) beds, pillows

-Large tub/shower

-Large bathtowels

-Clean (with caveat below)

Cons:
-Rooms are small - two full sized beds are not comfortable for two adults sharing one bed, and even with the smaller beds, the rooms are fairly cramped.

-Rooms did not cool well - my home A/C set at 78F was cooler than the room set at 66F with the fan on high. Do not bother opening your shade, as it will heat your room to the point of being unable to cool it. Because of this, I was unable to sleep well.

-Room hallways and elevators are either have the A/C off, or are unairconditioned. Being in South Texas in August, I would work up a sweat from leaving my room to arriving at the lobby or meeting areas.

-Better signs indicating room direction: some areas came to a "t" hallway, and you have to look around a corner to read the directional sign.

-Pool area - cramped and crowded, disgarded cups and limes were found strewn about the area, and beer bottles, cups, and a warning pylon (cone) was tossed off the balcony across an alley to the roof of a Municipal Performing-Arts Theater.

-Parking is woefully inadequate. Five levels are available, but parking spaces are limited and tight - some areas were closed for construction. Self-parking is $15/day, valet parking is $45/day. Our parking (self) was paid by the conference, but none was available. As such, I did not budget for valet parking for the whole weekend. Thankfully, enough complaints were made that the hotel provided the valet parking at no additional charge.

-Couch/bed and business chair in the room were stained.

-Bathroom needs an exhaust vent.

-Room decor can best be described as retro '60's or retro '70's, or modern and spartan - taste is subjective, but I just don't care for that decor. I was expecting something more...opulent

-Formica veneer on the center nightstand was chipped, and my two young children were scratched horribly on it trying to access the bed from there.

-No free high-speed internet. Come on! Even the mom-and-pop hotels provide free internet these days!

I would not recommend this hotel, but only marginally so.

I attended a conference here in April 2009 and unfortunately, it coincided with a huge festival celebrating Texas independence from Mexico. Hence, there were huge crowds and loud concerts lasting until past 2:00 am. I was required to be at the conference each morning at 8:00; thankfully, it was held in the Hyatt. In spite of being a new hotel, it has poor design and workmanship, especially the windows. We could hear everything going on outside (not just the concert) and along the hallways. My wife accompanied me on this trip since she wanted to visit Texas for the first time. Aside from the nice historic sites (the Alamo and the Riverwalk are just a few minutes from the hotel) and some good Tex-Mex restaurants, we both feel it's hard to give a really good review of this place. Overall, we're inclined to recommend it, but only marginally so. We cannot comment on the Marriot or other nearby hotels since we did not stay there, but we suggest at least investigating them before committing to the Hyatt

Very convenient location to explore downtown San Antonio. Rooms rather small and bland. Bedding very comfortable. Attentive service throughout the facility. A large property with absolutely no character. Very much a box upon box hotel. Amenities available at an elevated price (valet parking $33.00/day, Achiote restaurant ($18.00/person breakfast buffet). Would probably choose a more intimate hotel (Emily Morgan comes to mind) next time we visit San Antonio.

Our experiences with the Grand Hyatt brand have probably, frankly, spoiled us. We love to stay in a Grand Hyatt whenever possible, so when we decided to go to San Antonio this was a natural for us. Unfortunately, there were a couple of places where this particular hotel came up short, particularly with regard to sleep quality. When we travel with our kids, we usually take it for granted that the GH will have two queen beds in a room; not so here. We were told that all guest rooms that weren't king beds were equipped with two full beds. For two adults, this was just too small, so this was a big disappointment to us. Additionally, the rooms themselves were a bit small, particularly for the price we were paying.

On the upside, the location was great, the rooms were clean and nicely appointed with the exception noted above. Honestly, I don't think I would stay here again if we were with the kids; for family travel the Hyatt Hill Country resort probably would have been a better choice, and if we stay downtown again we'll probably try the Marriott.

It's a tourist/conference hotel in downtown San Antonio, located very conveniently on the Rivewalk and by the Tower of the Americas. That's the first thing to know about the hotel, clearly built for moving large groups and families in and out. Given that, this would not have been the most romantic of choices for a couple, but I was with a friend and it suited us just fine. The rooms were spacious, the bed very very comfortable, and the TV picture crisp and clear. Amenities were nice, though I discovered no shower cap at the worst time, and room service was prompt and good with the expected high fees. The pool seemed a little problematic, with limited lounges and burning hot cement tiles, and so many kids and young people splashing water into our drinks, but its 5th floor location outside and charming techno-exotica music piped throughout was very enjoyable. I can't say this would be my first choice to stay at, but for the price and the location, we couldn't have chosen better.

My wife and traveled to San Antonio to spend a couple of days then move on to padre island. We chose the hotel because of it's location on the riverwalk. The location was great but that's the only positive comment I have. We had to pay $46 to park are car for two days that was never mentioned during booking. No free wireless Internet. No free breakfast and the cafe/resturant were way over priced and not good. The hotel also advertised iPhone docks in room they are only iPod docks. No mini fridge or microwave in room. Overall room was very disappointing I would never recommend this hotel to anyone staying in San Antonio.
