We ate an excellent meal (lunch) in the Colonial Room at the historic Menger Hotel during our recent trip to San Antonio. But, why hoards of people would prefer to eat alongside a dirty (very) river in preference to this great room with actual white tablecloths and linens is beyond us! The food was no more expensive and it was excellent. I had the onion soup and a half sandwich, and my husband had a quesodilla which was, by far, better (and cheaper!) than the one we had the day before at a Mexican restaurant on the Riverwalk. And, of course, we had the mango ice cream...even if it didn't come from their original mango trees (read the history folks).
But, there were very few other diners! They appeared to be at the chain restaurants and fast food joints.
Service was slightly slow. We weren't in a hurry, but this might be a detractor for some. Our only complaint was that management should not give cleaning instructions (within earshot of diners) to workers who then set about industriously (but silently) cleaning...this should be done invisibly! And an historic hotel should have this worked out already.
