“Good Value, Away From The Conference Madness”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

In SA for petchem industry conference. All the major convention hotels booked. Had stayed at this Drury before so thought would try it again. Still a good choice - okay it is full of families and senior citizens on bus tours, taking advantage of the included breakfast and the 5:30 pm kickback with free drinks and "food". But hey - not sleeping in the lobby, right? Rooms are spacious and clean with good shower in bathroom. Price was right. Location a good, refreshing, ten minute walk - longer on The Riverwalk - from the convention hotels. PLUS - there was nobody else from the conference staying there - a nice added bonus. One feature that few discovered is the outdoor terrace on the top floor - tables, chairs, shielded from the wind - a few of us enjoyed a well deserved sundowner in relative peace and quiet with a great view of the city.

I arrived at 1015 am in the morning and valet the car and tuck the luggage away behind the front desk. I let them know I will be back at 4pm because I do not expect a room to be available at this time.

I return at 4pm and no line or bunch of people in the lobby and I ask to check into my room. They ask me if I am on the list and I ask what list..nobody told me about a list. Then proceed to tell me I have to wait 45 mins for a room. I politely inform them this isn't going to work for me and they chop the wait down to 20 minutes. Not friendly, not apologetic and not smiling. I don't get it.

The hotel in place is in a great location and the terrace rooms looking over the cathedral plaza are the bomb. Rooftop pool is cool if you are not queazy with heights.

Thank you for your feedback about your recent stay with us. No matter the time a guest checks in we want to make sure that their room is completed in an efficient and timely matter and from what you have explained it seems that we had a miscommunication between departments and for that we apologize. Again thank you for your feedback and we look forward to seeing you next time you're in San Antonio.

This place was awesome from the moment you drive up to the valet, walk up to the front desk, and enter your room. The Suite is definitely sized right. Plenty of space for maximum comfort. The room is separated by a divider(closets) separating the living area from the bedroom. Everything looked tip top. Jacuzzi was huge and extremely relaxing. Spent two days in it. No joke. The staff is very helpful and will go out of there way to help you with anything you need ANYTIME! Every staff member here has a great attitude. Even staff out in the hall maintaining the hotel are making sure your having a great experience. Very Nice Place to stay if your out looking for a great weekend in San Antonio!

We spent 3 nights at the Drury Plaza Hotel Riverwalk in San Antonio. Our room was in the San Fernando tower which is the latest piece to be renovated. The front desk staff were friendly, knowledgable and cared about customer service. We were given a room upgrade for free. The room overlooked the San Fernando Cathedral and the Riverwalk.

ROOMS:
-Our room was on the 9th floor of the San Fernando tower. This requires taking 2 separate elevators and a ramp to get to your room.
-Spacious balcony overlooking the cathedral and riverwalk. Separate bedroom, living area space with desk, flat screen tv, furniture. Big cabinet with small sink, microwave, fridge. Dining space for 2 with table and chairs.
-Mattress not very comfortable or 'lofty' as other hotels.
-Overall I did not find the room to be really that clean. Could have used another going over in the bathroom and kitchenette area.

FOOD:
-They had "free" food and beverage items (The 5 o'clock kick-back). You are given tickets at the beginning of your stay good for specific dates and times for food and alcoholic beverages.

-Food was "okay": more of a "fill the hole" menu until you could get a real meal. The basic items that can be s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d for big crowds: nachos, baked potatoes, hotdogs, chips, and dilute beer, wine, cocktails.

OTHER:
-Agree with others regarding the parking garage. Very skinny spots, nightmare to park a bigger vehicle.
-VERY CROWDED. Large groups of kids: cheerleaders, school bands etc. Kids would crowd elevators (and we needed to take 2 to get to our room), crowd sit down reception area and were overall very noisy (can you tell I don't have kids? my cats are nice and quiet!)

Overall, we got a good on-line deal for the room and the free upgrade. Would we do it again? Probably not. The free stuff couldn't out weigh the negatives.

This was my first time to stay in a Drury Hotel and it was fine. The building was a former bank, and turned into a hotel five(?) years ago. The transformation isn't quite complete yet, it looks like it can be turned back into a bank without a lot of effort in no time. They are probably using the same sofas, tables etc. in the lobby. The room we stayed in had 70' style furnitures. The place just looks very dated. On the other hand, some great art deco pieces are still there, particularly in the lobby area. If they renovate the place and bring it up to date, and keep the great pieces, it has a lot of potential to look really great.

My favorite aspect of the hotel are the employees. They were all nice and helpful. From the time we checked-in- quick and without hassles, Claudia also answered our questions and helped us plan a bus route to see some of the Missions. All the other front desk employees we encountered and asked questions from were also friendly and helpful. The staff in the cafeteria were nice, as well as the valet staff, they even apologized when a cab we asked for took a while to arrive. The one housekeeping staff we met, Maria, was also very courteous and nice. I give the staff a solid A.

The room we rented had a balcony and had a great view of the cathedral and environs. The size was good. As I said earlier, the décor and furniture were dated, the bed was comfy though. The bathroom can be cleaned a little better. Our room was in a different wing from the main building, so you have to take two different elevators and some maneuvering in hallways to get to it; we got used to it and it wasn't a problem, but I can see it being a nuisance to some. The hotel is located at the riverwalk, so, very convenient. The breakfast and afternoon snack were fine.

I wouldn't mind staying here again in the future especially if they do major renovations.

We stayed there for eight nights at the end of March and I would just rate this place as okay. There are so many places to stay around the Riverwalk so honestly if you have the $$$ to pay for a nicer place like the Westin, I would totally go that route.

PROS:
- LOCATION, just go down to the basement of the hotel and you have doors right out onto the Riverwalk (quieter part of the Riverwalk which was nice)
- POOL: the view of the rooftop pool is awesome and the kids really enjoyed it up there
- EXTRAS: breakfast, kickback, long distance, internet

CONS:
- DIRTY!!! The carpet in our room was worn, stained, dirty...it was really quite gross actually. Found socks, toys under furniture. My husband lifted the pillows off the couch and found all sorts of food, dirt, etc. The rooms and hotel itself needs a lift and there is definitely some kind of musty, old smell to the place. The dining room chairs are stained and very dirty as well and the carpets around the hotels look like they always need vacuuming.
- SERVICE: check in and check out people working are grumpy. When my husband complained that our room hadn't been vacuumed midway during our trip (little pile of sand left on floor because kids had dumped some by accident) and also did tell them that the room was dirty, the manager did promise to reverse first and last night of our hotel stay but when we got the bill, only the first night was reversed. We didn't fight it upon check out, couldn't be bothered but it's just annoying to promise and not deliver. The people working in the dining area are pleasant though.
- FOOD: same standard breakfast every morning with no variety and the quality of it was very low. Kickback food was a bit better. There needs to more fresh, unprocessed, tasty foods to choose from...more fruit to start off with. The coffee was bad too.
- CLIENTELE: there was some nice families, individuals and couples staying here don't get me wrong but in general, this place is not really classy as the photos make it out to be. There were lots of rude, loud, obnoxious people in the dining area that looked that they had been drinking and partying the night before. Who wears PJs to the dining room? Saw that a few times.

I was a bit skeptical before staying here based upon the reviews. People either raved about it or completely hated it. After staying here I've decided reviews are so subjective and often times are based upon expectations. That being said, the Drury Plaza exceeded our expectations. We did have a 30 minute wait the day we checked in, but they called our cell phone and held our luggage for us while we went for ice cream on the riverwalk so this wasn't a big deal. Speaking of the riverwalk, I do not understand the complaining about location. In my opinion, the location and ease of Riverwalk access was perfect! We stayed in an oversized corner room in the main building. We had tons of space in the bedroom, bathroom and the main living area. We spoke to other guests who commented that the rooms in the San Fernando Tower portion of the hotel were even bigger than our room and had been recently updated (our room could have used some new carpet). Other positives: the two pools and three hot tubs, great hot breakfast, lovely outdoor terraces for drinking, lounging and reading (our favorite was the San Fernando terrace) and the comfy beds! Housekeeping usually ran late so if you are expecting morning room cleaning you might want to change that expectation. Overall we were very pleased and would defintely stay here again!!
