“Better the Second Time Around”

Once again we made our annual trip to visit family in San Antonio. I checked out several places, thought about trying a new place this year; but decided to try this place again. We had liked it a few years ago when we stayed and all the current reviews raved about it. We had some airline miles to spend so the cost did not bother us too much. We arrived on a Tuesday and was greeted by a mass of friendly folks.
The head valet asked if we understood the valet parking cost etc. I had done my research and we had decided that the $30.00 a day would be worth it for us to pay to have a parking place we did not have to hunt for or pay for every time we decided to go some place. We did tip every time we picked up our car.
We were greeted at the front desk with a smile and they knew exactly who we were and that we were there for pleasure. Funny thing is I think we may have gotten the same room we had the last time we were there. It was a corner room over looking what used to be the circus museum. It was a very nice room with a good city view and was in a quiet park of the floor.
As stated our room was great everything was clean and lovely. There is a safe in the room if needed.
The hotel is right on the river, but not on the busy part, which is good. It is within walking distance of all the restaurants and other attractions. But let me tell you the restaurant in the hotel is great. We ate breakfast there every day, and lunch on one occasion.(Be mindful that birds will be a part of any outside meal on the river. Just a heads up.) The bar is good too. If you have breakfast there make sure to find Maria as she will take special care of you.
Every time we came back in to the hotel we were greeted with a warm hello or even "Welcome back how was your day?" Or "do you need directions today?" And we were give great info. We even decided to extend our stay by one day. We were given a very good rate and we had no trouble taking care of that at the front desk.
As for the valet parking we had no problem with waiting. We were on vacation and not in hurry to catch a plane or needing to be out at a busy time. My husband actually forgot his cell phone in the car when we first arrived and the valet called to see if they could bring it up to our room. And they did within minutes. They also put our navigation system out of sight.
Anyone that is coming to San Antonio should try this hotel. We will stay here again. I really don't see the need to explore any others.
One thing, our coffee maker never really worked. We told the front desk and they said they would clean it out and they said if that did not work THEN they would replace it. It never worked. It took about 30 minutes to make coffee. We decided to not report it again and it was becoming a "thing" and we were there to avoid "things". Also the clean up crew came kind of early to ask if we needed the mini bar filled up. And one more thing. A grab bar in the bath tub area would come in handy. I am not so tall and stepping out of the shower is a bit of a challenge. Grabbing the slick granite counter is not a good option. Still a great place to stay.
Make sure you visit the pool on the roof at night!!!

Room Tip: No need to pay for the river view unless you just want to pay the money.

Great location, nice city hotel located on the river walk with access to many Resturants and Bars.
A few niggles though.
No towels in room for first shower on arrival after a long days travel. The towels were sent up within an hour or so when requested, but annoying as I had not noticed and had already showered and was wet and cold.

Cleaning of room generally ok, but dark hairs on bathroom floor (I'm blonde) and dusty bedside tables.
(A red drinks straw in situ on arrival was still under my bedside table when we left.)

There were only sheets and an empty duvet case on the bed, we had to request a blanket as we were too cold.
Sometimes the room service added it when making the bed and sometimes they didn't, but at least we had one.
The matress protector comprised of two loose blanket items which rucked up under the body during the night and
was quite annoying and uncomfortable if you are a 'wriggler' as I am.

The breakfast bar bakery selection was not available on the second morning, although the menu board showed bakery items were. We were able to buy toasted bagels though which took a while, but were nice and hot.
We went elsewhere after that.

The most upsetting element however for us was the cleanliness of the roof top pool.
We like to spend a lot of time by and in the pool, but it was very murky and at one time I gave up going in due to hair floating in the water and muck on the bottom.
Every other hotel that we have ever stayed at has had a pool hoover thing that they used each morning to remove any debris etc. we went to the pool most mornings on our two week stay and didn't see that once.
I asked the front desk when the pool would be cleaned and explained the problem, (I thought to go back when I knew it had been cleaned) but they were unable to tell me and said they would report the problem. No change the next day though.

The pool was extremely busy on the weekends and full of adults and children, but still no visible cleaning.
The pool also only had bar service at the weekends and even then any food order (including pototo crisps) was classed as in- room dining and incurred an additional percentage and a $4 delivery charge. The large ice tub also failed to materialise again after the weekend.
Although having a notice on the door as you went in saying 'no smoking' people were smoking around the pool and on one occasion even in it and flicking the ash on the pool side!

That all sounds bad, but on average as I stated to begin with, in general a nice Hotel. Especially if you are not a pool lover.

Just back from a conference in San Antonio. My husband traveled with me, so location and amenities that were good for both of us was important. I did some research before booking and decided to stay at the Hotel Contessa and I'm glad I did. The location was terrific for the Convention Center and the tourist attractions (Riverwalk, La Vilitta, Hemisphere Park, Market Square). The hotel rooms are all suites with a very comfortable layout. The pool area and gym are very nice. The staff are pleasant and most helpful. If I ever go back to San Antonio I would stay there again.

My mom and 2 children stayed in the cityview parlor suite. Relaxing experience. Bellman's service was outstanding. The marble & granite was beautiful. The two separate rooms worked well for sleeping. The parlor room was oversized & allowed for lots of playing by the children never felt cozy. Rooftop pool experience was fantastic. Only negative was small amounts of shampoo/conditioner/shower gel not enough for 1 person let alone 4. It seemed for the elegance of the hotel they went cheap on this. Beautiful riverwalk hotel we will be back.

We stayed at the Hotel Contessa while attending the APIC convention. We have stayed at other hotels on the riverwalk, but NONE even came close to the Hotel Contessa. The rooms were beautiful, the beds were comfortable, and breakfast at the restaurant was exceptional. Above all, the hotel staff was friendly and helpful - especially Eddie G. who greeted us each time he saw us and made us feel so welcome. From now on, the Hotel Contessa will be our hotel of choice each time we visit San Antonio.

Nice upmarket hotel, tastefully furnished, with very friendly and helpful concierge. Roof top pool is very pleasant.
My only negative comments were that the one tiny tube of bath gel instead of soap wasn't really enough for two people and $30/day for parking seemed a little stiff for San Antonio.
