“Great place for a walk in the woods”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2014

Really nice park. There was an issue last year, but they have widened many of the trails to reduce undergrowth and improve sight lines along the trail. They are also improving some of the paved trails.
Personally, there is so much more to the trails than just what is paved. Even the official map found here: http://www.sanantonio.gov/parksandrec/pdfs/OPSchnabel_map.pdf doesn't show all of the trails. I have used a mix of dirt and paved trails to get in a nice 5+ mile walk/hike.
In addition on every walk that I've taken, I have seen a variety of birds and at least two deer. So this park is also a haven for wildlife.
Getting off the trails, there are a number of picnic areas (two of which are quite large and covered) a nicely redone play area with a rubberized surface, a little water area to help beat the heat that is attached to the YMCA that is in the park.
The sports fields, soccer and baseball, all are very nice and can get crowded on Saturdays, so plan accordingly.
Overall, it is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, which, in my opinion, is the purpose of a park.

“Great Greenway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2014

Have been to this park/area many times. There are running events held here as well as the Leon Creek Greenway can be accessed through here. There is a YMCA close by too. In the park is a playground and pavilion with some nature trails. The Greenway is a wide paved walkway for walkers, runners, bikes and such and it connects for miles to other areas of this part of town.
Lovely place to get exercise but there have been issues. I have seen concrete picnic tables overturned in the picnic areas, graffiti, and more recently, unfortunately, violence. This is very sad as it is in a good part of town and a well used area but please do not go alone or after dark!
There are running events held here during the year also.

“Great trails both paved and dirt”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2014

One second you are wandering around aimlessly in the middle of the woods and the next you are overlooking the golf course. Great place to bring your dog or jog/run/walk with deer running around you.

“Great Recreational Park!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2013

My family and I visit OP Schnabel frequently and we love it! It is also the home of the Braundera YMCA so there is a lot of activity at this park. It has FABULOUS walking/running trails and also great for biking (on and off path)...there is room for everybody! The paths are wide and long and the visitors have great park etiquette. It also has a great playground.
