We had our second dinner in San Antonio here. The first, which was the worst Mexican we had ever had - anywhere - was at one of the restaurants directly on the Riverwalk. Acenar is above the river and a little out of the mainstream. It has a good sized inside seating area and a very nice patio overlooking the river (it was raining, so we stayed inside). Acenar is a gem! I had read reviews which mentioned the empanadas and alhambres appetizers. We had both. The skewered marinated beef (5 of them!) was flavorful and cooked to medium-rare perfection. The cilantro slaw that they were served on was a tasty counterpoint. Empanadas were good, with decorative drizzles of different salsas (with good flavor and some kick) and lime-y avocado. We shared Chicken Tinga Chalupas- no bland chicken here! the veggie topping was laced with cilantro. We stayed away from the Margaritas which other reviewers noted to be rather expensive. Service was excellent and well informed. All in all, an excellent dinner experience. Hope to go back in better weather before we leave.
