“Wonderful mole, nice courtyard”

Upscale, contemporary. Nice for a nice meal but not expensive. The mole is wonderful as is the tomato-chipotle enchilladas.

“A Little Out of the Way, but Worth It!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

Wow, did we enjoy the meal and the evening we spent at La Fonda. Best mexican food we had while in San Antonio! This little jewel was so very enjoyable, we were seated at an outside dining area which was beautiful. From the front it looks like you are going into a house, but inside you are welcomed in to a very nice restaurant area which stretches out through the house and into the outside area. The hostess and servers were all very professional and friendly and the food was excellent! Don't miss a chance to check La Fonda out!

“Best Mexican food we had in San Antonio”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012

La Fonda my be a little bit out of the way from downtown San Antonio, but it is certainly worth the drive into the burbs for some outstanding Mexican food.

The atmosphere is very family friendly as you feel like you are eating in the owner's house and the staff is inviting you into their family. There is also an authentic Mexican vibe with the decor and architecture. The patio looked very nice, but we were unfortunately there during a cold spell and chose to sit inside.

At our waitress' suggestion, we began with the special jalapeno margaritas which were amazing. I loved the kick that went along with the traditional margarita flavor. We then ordered the chili rellenos (roasted peppers) and the puntas filete (beef tips). It took a little while for these to come out, but the wait was totally worth it. We had been eating Tex-Mex every night since our arrival in San Antonio 3 days earlier, and this was the best. Everything was cooked well and very flavorful. The beef tips were nice and tender and came with rice and avocado. The chili rellenos was nice and smokey stuffed with delicious meat and rice. These were also a slight bit tangy and were complimented well by the spicy jalapeno margarita.

We then finished with the special dessert, a pumpkin flan which came with raspberries and creme. This was delicious and really tasted great with the cold weather we were having.

“Big disappointment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2012

I took my family here while visiting San Antonio. Read so many great reviews and was really looking forward to it. We were seated in the outdoor dining area and it was beautiful. Unfortunately, it went down from there. The bus girl gave my granddaughter the fish eye for playing with the sugar packs and was downright rude. Everyone commented on it. After we were served our drinks and our food order taken, we never saw the server again until the food came. Mine, the Filet special was so overcooked that I sent it back. Took too long for a refire so I tried the Tortilla soup. Big disappointment again. It was terrible. Was the color of gumbo and had a burnt taste to it. Others had good food. The Duck Tacos, fajitas and Milinesa dishes were good. Mine was the exception. But the food wasn't the reason I won't go back. It was the inattentive service and rude busser that spoiled it for me.

“Whoah nelly, that was awesome.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2012

La Fonda on Main is located not far from Trinity University. This little place could easily be mistaken for a house in a neighborhood. Ask for a table out in their courtyard. You will be surrounded by lush tropical plants. The food was amazing. This is TexMex at it's best. You will not be disappointed. I recommend the mango margaritas, the enchilladas are fantastic, as well as the trio of salsas. Great service, very knowledgeable about sauces, prep, etc. I like that they were comfortable helping us choose from the menu. I could have eaten here all day.
