Crumpets used to be one of downtown Alamo Heights' crown jewels, years ago in its original location. They were known for their enormous bakery display, which featured amazing tortes and delectable cakes and petit fours and (sigh!) beautiful pastry swans. (The meals we're reliably good, sure, but you went for the desserts!)
Then-- they moved to the Harry Wurzbach location. They gained a lovely patio and a scenic creek, and floor-to-ceiling windows, but gone is the gorgeous bakery display with all the fabulous dessert options.
The service is still good, but the menu options are all-too-predictable, and anything but economical. (The last time I went for Sunday brunch, I had one of the brunch entrees, my kids split a burger; we each had a beverage and the kids split a dessert and the bill totaled more than $55 with tip... we've not gone back.)
They do offer live music (harpist, classic guitarist) sometimes, which is lovely. Crumpets is a nice place for an elegant-but-not-fussy-fancy meal on special occasions. But I still miss the Crumpets-that-was!
