“Charming and good value for money hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2014

We stayed for 2 nights at El Tropicano upon recommendation by a friend who used to work there . We didn't regret at all . Check in was fast and efficient. We were given the newly renovated rooms at the top floor . Rooms were spacious and amenities were complete. The lobby is quite nice and elegant. Location was also strategic . Value for money was also very good . All in all we found the place to be charming and will never hesitate to recommend this hotel to our family and friends when they visit San Antonio

Room Tip: Top floor rooms are newly renovated and very well placed and decorated. Amenities are complete . A m...

A real disappointment. If you don't know San Antonio you might want to know this hotel is a pretty good hike into the main part of town, yes you can walk along the riverwalk but it is still a mile or so of the real heart of the action. I.E. Riverwalk Hotel means its on the riverwalk but way out of the main part of town.

Hotel is old and run down. I will say the room was at least clean. We stayed in the tower part of the hotel and the room temperature is contolled from the front desk not separate airconditioners. This was bad news as our room was over heated even through we asked each night to turn down the heat. Leaving the door open was to noisy as the hotel is near a couple of hospitals.

We had to asked for towels and bath soap as the cleaning service never let any both days we were staying there.

Only a buffet breakfast is served at the hotel, they do have a coffee bar and cocktail bar of sorts. The buffet was $9.95 and no better than the free breakfast at Holiday Inn Express. There are no close dining options, it is either walk a mile, take a cab (about $7 one way) or drive.

Opt for something closer to the main part of the riverwalk you will be glad you did.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the tower as you can't control the room temperature from your room. Elevator...

I enjoy recognizing people who provide great customer service.

I found such a thing at the hotel breakfast - with Daniel. I wanted to speak to his manager personally, but was told by the front desk to post here instead...So...

He was our server both days. This is a buffet (which is a good deal at $5 when you make your reservation, $10 at the door), so not much interaction required, really. However, he was always friendly, helpful and had an excellent attitude. This made us feel very at ease while we ate. So, manager who reads this every day (according to the front desk), take note.

Otherwise, the hotel lobby was very nicely decked out, but the exterior is very tired. The location is a good walk (15 minutes?) from the Alamo and most of the 'things to do'. But, entry to the river walk is just across the street and it's a pleasant walk.

Rooms were adequate, nice enough.

We were far enough from the downtown loop to avoid the crowds, but a short walk from all of the action.

We were fortunate enough to get a room on the 9th floor, which was spacious and private.

The staff was very friendly and accommodating, especially Jesse and Will.

The gym was well equipped and convenient.

Room Tip: You've gotta try for the 9th floor!

We really loved the atmosphere. Wonderful place to stay... on the river but farther away from the business of the main area of the riverwalk.. great for quiet romantic place to get away! The bed was the most comfortable bed weve slept in compared to ANY other hotels. Great breakfast , friendly staff, super awesome place..we will stay there everytime we go to visit san antonio!!

The staff is extremely friendly ANC helpful, the rooms are nice and clean. I loved all the tropical plants in the lobby area! The pool is also very enjoyable I would say the only negative was the smell by the pool and the fact that you have to
Pay for parking. Aside from that I would definitely stay here again.

We were there a week ago for two nights. Cindy, at the front desk, was charming, hospitable, and eager to ensure that we would enjoy a comfortable stay. We did. The hotel is early 1960's "funky," as are we, and sitting in the spacious lobby area and outdoor terrace adjacent to the coffee bar brought back many happy memories of our first visits to San Antonio in our "salad days." Yes, it is a 60's hotel; therefore, the rooms are small as are the bathrooms, but the windows can be opened (just like in good old days). The "love" birds in the far end of the lobby were charming and "frisky" (love birds after all). The trolley stops directly in front of the hotel and the water taxi is available just a few steps down on the River Walk. The buffet breakfast was good, and it was enhanced by the very efficient wait staff.

Room Tip: Try to get a river view.
