“Large apartment with great views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2014

We stayed at the Embassy Suites Riverwalk in San Antonio in April and had a great stay. There were 4 of us (2 adults and 2 kids). We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment on a high floor overlooking the Riverwalk. The room was very spacious, clean and well laid out (living room in the middle with 2 bedrooms on either side). The hotel was very centrally located but far enough away from the "loud" parts of the Riverwalk. We were able to easily walk to the Riverwalk, restaurants, the Alamo and there's also a Children's museum a couple of blocks away (we did not rent a car during our stay). The free breakfast buffet was great and made it easy to get an early start on the day. There is also a good restaurant located in the hotel (Luke Restaurant). The only minor issues were that their pool area could have been nicer and their pool could have been bigger (the kids still enjoyed the pool though). I would definitely recommend this hotel for families, tourists, or business travelers.

Room Tip: Choose a high floor overlooking the Riverwalk.

When we arrived to the hotel we had to drive around twice because a lot of people were checking in at the same time. We arrived around 3:45pm 45minutes after check in and were told that our room wasn't ready on the 17th floor. That if we liked we could wait for them to get it clean but she didn't know when it would be ready but she had a room ready on the 7th floor. We had been at Schlitterbaun all day and we were ready to check in. Another of the other guys over heard her and said that the room on the 17th floor was one of the best room. We decided to go ahead and get the room on the 7th floor and I was left with the curiosity of the room on the 17th floor. Well, our room on the 7th floor was clean and spacious as always. This is the third time we have stayed here. We have considered this hotel to be our home away from home. You cant beat the home cook breakfast & manager special. When we checked out on Sunday and made it home I could not find one of my favorite shoes. I called the hotel and left a message with housekeeping. I had to called three times until I finally was able to talked to someone. Needless to saw no one found my shoes.

Room Tip: I never pay extra for a balcony room. You are almost never in the room that long. Also 8:00am is a r...

This very nice hotel has a very good breakfast buffet that goes until 10:00 am on weekdays, nice for not having to get up early unless you want to. Lots of food and beverage choices and plenty of room. The evening happy hour was just ok. Drinks were fine, but food consisted of lettuce salad, cantaloupe and honeydew pieces, small cheese squares, tomatoes and very dry, tasteless chips. It's nice they do the drinks, but some real appetizers would be nicer. The rooms are very nicely furnished with lots of storage space.
The location is very good for walking to the Empire or Majestic theatres. We did attend a very good jazz concert at the Empire, just a few short blocks away, but as mentioned by someone else, it is not on the busier part of the riverwalk. You do have to walk past some not busy enough areas to get to the actual riverwalk restaurants, etc. The valet service we had was very good, but did seem pricey even for the area. The desk man didn't even say thank you when I told him they had left the valet charge off our bill. He added it, but was busy on his phone. They did not pay attention to the notes I left on the reservation email, so if you want something taken care of, call ahead.

There is something that we experienced that I have not seen mentioned in any reviews and I am sure this is not a rare event. Maybe people do not look around as we did when we were walking. San Antonio apparently has a big homeless substance abuse issue. The Embassy is actually on a branch of the Riverwalk that is not populated with a lot of businesses. It is a very nice park like setting except for all the homeless on the benches. We were there for 5 nights and not a day went by that we did not experience this. There were people sleeping on the benches. There were people actually along the Riverwalk using drugs and consuming alcohol and they were apparently already intoxicated and it was apparent they had not bathed in a long time. On one occasion a drunkard blocked our path and we had difficulty getting around him and he was very verbal and insulting on our way back we requested that a police officer escort us which he did and lo and behold another man with his beer in hand started saying craziness to us with the officer present. He threatened him with arrest and he left the Riverwalk. There are police officers on bicycles that patrol the area and they run these lack luster citizens off but as soon as the officers leave they congregate back like cockroaches. The homeless also wait around the outdoor restaurants and when people leave their tables they sit down and eat the leftovers until the restaurant employees run them off.The only difficulty we had with the actual hotel was not enough coffee supplies for our room and check out was difficult bill not accurate and they only had one person doing valet and bell service and he was very busy retrieving cars. Poor management not the employees fault.

Room Tip: The 2 room 2 bath suite is very roomy. Gave us all the room we needed for 3 travelers

The breakfast was worth the stay here. Variety of everything, and for everyone. Walked right out side door and downstairs to the riverwalk. Restaurant, environmental services, and Valet staff were great.

It was a beautiful hotel. I loved the way the rooms were arranged, unlike most Embassy Suites we've stayed at, both rooms had outside windows. The staff was so warm and helpful - especially when we were asking for directions. We were able to check in early - before Noon, and to stay a little longer at checkout. The space where the Manager's Reception and Breakfast was served was more than adequate. Though the hotel seemed very full, there were always tables, and the efficiency of the bartenders led to very short waits for drinks. There was a trolley right outside the hotel which, for a very reasonable price, took you to most of the places you would want to see. Ask for a transfer, which I think was 15 cents and your return trip is free. Though it is on the Riverwalk, it is not where most of the bars and restaurants are. But that is just a few blocks away. There was a pool on the roof which seemed small for the size of the hotel. There were only about 10 lounge chairs, though there were some regular chairs, a bar and music. t was a great value for a wonderful hotel, and the best thing about it was the attentive service. . .

Room Tip: It would be nice to have a room facing the Riverwalk. A lot of the rooms had balconies - that would...

4/22/14 no washcloths/coffee on check in. It took 4 calls to get them. 4/23 rooms were not cleaned until we called after 5pm. Housekeeping did not leave coffee or glasses. Had to call again and ask for the. This time ERIC at the front desk took responsibility and made a followup call to make sure we were taken care of. We did appreciate that.

Room Tip: Don't pay for a balcony. You will only get one chair (fire code I am told) and they are too smal...
