“Good location and great staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2013 via mobile

Stayed two nights at this hotel. The location is very good, just a couple of blocks from the River Walk. All of the employees we had contact with helped make it a pleasant stay. From the Valet attendant, the Bell Man, to the Front Desk lady, they all were outgoing, friendly and professional at all times. We had a corner room on the fifth floor with a nice view. The room was a little small, with an almost useless small closet. We moved the ironing board into the bathroom to give a little more closet space. The room was very clean, and overall quite comfortable. You have to remember this is an old hotel and as such is not as updated as most newer ones. We would stay there again.

The friendly staff, history, and kept up hallways and main areas help to hide the need for room modifications. The staff was very friendly upon arrival and helped with a fast check-in and directions to food and the conference center. All of the common areas were nice and the historic pictures of the building are great. The rooms had old and worn carpet. The furniture had seen better days. The overall room and bathroom was clean. The hotel is very close to a segment of the Riverwalk. The hotel is about a 10-15 minute walk to the Alamo and Convention Center. There are a lot of restaurants in walking distance to the hotel. The hotel participates in this very good points for green program. The staff way very helpful once again upon check out. I ate breakfast once at the restaurant. Overall a good stay, the staff and history of the hotel made up for the outdated rooms with rough/worn carpet.

The Sheraton Gunter was overall a nice place to stay. The facility was well maintained and clean. I knew there was a potential problem when one of the in room amenities was earplugs. Sure enough, there was a fair amount of noise from the street (and I was on an upper floor) as well as the surrounding rooms. The service was adequate, but there was no one in the restaurant or the bar, but there is stiff competition in the area. The only parking is valet which was pretty steep ($30+/day) or you could park in the city deck around the corner. If you get it for a good price, go for it. If it is about the same as some of the surrounding hotels, maybe they would be a better bet.

We stayed here for our daughter's AF BMT Graduation. Overall, it was a great stay! Check in was easy and great customer service is always a plus. Walking distance to River Walk. Valet parking is a little expensive ($30 per night) but then most of other hotels around the River Walk charge for parking. Gunter bakery (attached to the hotel) is awesome for a quick breakfast on the go, and Starbucks right across the street is also very convenient. I would stay here again.

I've read some very mixed reviews about this Sheraton but I had a very good experience.

Pros: check in was easy, the hotel and room were clean, and it was centrally located. The club lounge had some snacks and drinks -- but nothing crazy to write home about. The price was very reasonable -- about the same as the Four Points but this is a much better option. The bed here was very comfortable as is usually the case at Starwood hotels (except for Four Points).

Cons: Nothing really

I enjoyed the location because its just a few blocks to the Alamo and a couple blocks to riverwalk.

I read about a haunted room but I dont remember which room.

I've stayed at the Gunter many times in the last 4 years, especially when I'm attending a conference in San Antonio, but also when I'm in San Antonio taking in a show or concert at the Majestic Theater.

The Gunter is an old building that has been renovated into awesome, spacious, rooms. The decor is really nice too, giving you a feeling of what the cattle barons of the 19th and 20th century felt.

The restaurant is nice, but the bakery is even better!

It is within minutes walk of some of the best bars and restaurants on the River Walk and is directly across the street from the Majestic Theater.

You don't have to pay the $25/night valet parking. There is a public garage on the other side of the hotel that is $8/night self-parking.

If you are an SPG member, you get access to the lounge that has an awesome spread for breakfast, snacks, and nightcaps.

I stay here whenever I can. If you're there for a convention, it is a 20 minute walk to the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center. Since it is San Antonio, the weather is almost always nice enough to walk wherever you want to go.

If you're worried about security, don't. There is an active police presence in this entire area. There are some vagrants that hang out at the local park and in the doorways of some of the churches, but in all my years I have never been hassled by panhandlers or felt unsafe at any time of night. The same can be said for my female associates who have stayed there and attended conferences on their own.

If you've got a family, it is close enough to the Alamo and the myriad of curiosity places in front of the Alamo (Ripley's, Taussands, etc.) to walk. It is not close to any of the theme parks or the museum district.

Enjoy your stay!

Room Tip: I've only stayed on the SPG floors, so have no knowledge of the other floors. All those rooms a...

I stayed at this hotel on a time share package. I asked for a roll away bed but was treated to a larger room. The location of this hotel makes it easy to get to the Riverwalk. All of the staff working during our stay were great.

The hotel lobby and elevators were very clean. Once we hit the hallway to our room, everything changed. You could see the dirt and stains on the blue carpet. I watched one of the staff members clean up vomit with some spray and paper towels.

Our room was worse. The carpet did not get any better. The bathroom shower had mold growing all over the tile. The door even had mold growing on it.

We opened the sofa sleeper and found used stain sheets. I have not ever encountered this level of filth in a hotel before in my life.
