“walking tour of the historic houses”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

Do the walking tour of the historic houses. The visiting center has the guide. Also, there is a house with a mini museum with paintings. It is free and was a pleasant surprise to visit.

“Stately Homes, Some Along the Riverwalk Makes for a Great Visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

This is a lovely area to walk around or if it's just too hot - to drive around. There are many beautiful homes and the area seems to be very well looked after. There are some homes that are open to visitors on certain days and some with restricted hours. The area can also be walked by going down to the riverwalk sections, which were certainly welcome to us in the summer, when it was over 100 and felt at least 10 degrees cooler down by the water.

“King William Row”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

I walked through the King William District after visiting the Guenther House. The houses are beautiful, but after living in Philadelphia for the past 5 yrs, I'd at least like to be able to tour the inside of a home or two like the way things are set up on the east coast. I think an audio/self guided tour can only go so far. Area itself is nice with houses either being worked on or well kept. Come take a look if you're interested, but know you can't go in and see anything

“'free and fanciful'”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

If you enjoy a walk, this charming neighbourhood transports you back to another place and time. The visitor centre in the area offers a free guide of a suggested route. Some homes are in various states of repair, many are impeccably kept and some are available to tour. It's a lovely way to spend an hour or two. Well worth the meandering and could easily enhance a visit to the riverwalk trail (which joins it in various places).

“Go during the day and then again at night...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

We took a horse and carriage tour thru this wonderful old, historical neighborhood. We learned a lot about the homes, architecture, people that founded this area. WE got some good glimpses into the homes thru their large, lighted windows. They are just beautiful! We knew we had to come back during the day, to see the gardens and yards and things you cannot see in the dark!

Day time was much busier. Lots of cars, walkers, joggers, etc. We were able to pull over however and take a picture of flowers, homes and trees if we wanted, even if we had to get out of the car and walk back to the subject at hand. People waved and several said hello when we did some walking. Locals gave us directions and gave us suggestions on what homes to check out because of gardens or windows.! We had been told that they would not want us in their neighborhood-they would not take kindly to seeing our car (with out of state plates-esp Yankee plates...) parked or even being driven thru the neighborhood. We discovered just the opposite.

Plan on visiting this treasure of San Antonio. You will be very pleased when you do.
