Owner description: Market Square, known as El Mercado by locals, is a great place to shop where the locals do. You can find anything from clothing to art and furniture, all with a Mexican flare, in downtown San Antonio.

“Great shopping!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

Highly recommend going early in the day as this place gets crowded. We went on a late Sunday afternoon and alot of the shops were closed already. We went back on Tuesday at 11am and was perfect. Don't bother with the big inside market, prices were awful! The shops across from Mi Tierra had the best prices. Sales clerks were nice and helpful. I feel bad that it's not safe to go to Mexico, but this is the best next thing. We got some great deals!

“Good Place Buy Souveniers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013

There are plenty of shops here, with some only selling merchandise made in Mexico. A lot of them had the same things for sale. Some of the shops face outside, while some are located in a very large building, which reminded me of a flea market. There was a restaurant and bakery with Mexican cuisine and several other eateries. We went when it just opened, so there weren't very many other people there.

“Fun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

We spent a few hours walking through all of the shops. The food vendors were great. There was local entertainment (some decent, some great, but all fun to watch and support). The shops were fun and the prices reasonable for the most part. You do have to really hunt for the unique items though as most of the shops sold the same items at the same prices. We did find some interesting items and had a great time walking around.

The indoor markets were a bit tough to navigate for people in wheelchairs or with baby carriages, but not impossible.

“A chance to bargain and do it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

During my time here I purchased a nice set of margarita glasses and two turquoise rings, a blanket, and certainly made good use of the opportunity to bargain down and haggled with this doorkeepers.

This doorkeepers told me no one bargains anymore and my response was that I have been going to El Mercado since I was a kid. I no longer live in San Antonio but I insisted on never paying the full price and got at least 10% off.
